Two volunteer firefighters were beaten up while trying to put out a fire that engulfed a neighborhood in Port Area in Manila on Friday.
Jonathan Alviz said he and a fellow firefighter were waiting for water supply from other fire trucks when residents attacked them, with some hitting them with dos por dos, referring to a 2×2 lumber.
At least 13 fire trucks helped in extinguishing the blaze that broke out at a residential area in Barangay 650 in Port Area, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
Sr. Supt. Eddie Tanawan, Manila Fire District marshal, said the blaze was declared fire out at 2:22 p.m. after reaching the second alarm.
In Pasay, a 10-year-old girl died after a blaze razed several houses along Conchita Street in Barangay 127 past 11 p.m. on Friday.
Initial investigation showed that the girl was left along with her 13-year-old brother when the incident happened.
‘My eldest child jumped from the roof in panic, so he wasn’t able to find his sister,’ their mother told reporters.
The BFP said the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault.
A total of 76 families or 347 people sought temporary shelter at the Juan Sumulong Elementary School, with the Pasay government providing food supplies, hygiene kits and sleeping materials.
