Thai social media users have reported finding their names listed as members of political parties without their consent.
Personal details, including ID numbers, were allegedly used to register them as party members, prompting calls for the Election Commission (EC).
Initial reports appeared in posts on Oct 31. Many users commented that they had experienced similar misuse of their identity, raising concerns about potential problems and legal consequences.
Reports continue to surface of individuals falsely listed as members of both active and defunct political parties.
In response, People’s Party MP Suphanat Minchaiynunt advised citizens to urgently check if they or members of their family were registered without their consent.
On Monday, EC secretary-general Sawaeng Boonmee, said an investigation was needed, to ensure fairness for both citizens and political parties.
Anyone who found their name wrongly registered as a member of a party could file a complaint with the EC, he said.
Mr Sawaeng warned political parties that falsifying membership registrations could lead to criminal penalties for party registrars of up to three years in prison and fines for party leaders.
