Woman arrested with B20m in untaxed cigarettes

A Thai woman has been arrested in this southern border province with smuggled cigarettes worth about 20 million baht.

Highway police found the cigarettes in 965 cartons in a pickup truck that they had stopped for a search on Tuesday on a highway in tambon Khuha Tai of Rattaphum district.

The smuggled cigarettes were hidden in boxes and covered with a cloth. Police said the 46-year-old woman, identified only as Tisanamadee, had picked up the cigarettes in Hat Yai district of Songkhla and was delivering them to Ao Luk and Khao Phanom districts of Krabi.

Police estimated the value of the illicit cigarettes at about 20 million baht.
