SP Rachael Kawala has been appointed the new spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), taking over from SSP Patrick Onyango, who served in the position for eight years.
The announcement was made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, as part of a wider police reshuffle.
Before her new role, Kawala served as the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, where she was recognised for her professionalism, effective communication, and ability to maintain strong relations between the police and the media.
SSP Onyango, who returned to the KMP spokesperson position in 2018 after a brief transfer in 2016, is credited with modernising police-media engagement and enhancing transparency during his tenure.
In her new position, Kawala will be deputized by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, who will continue supporting the metropolitan communication operations. Meanwhile, Lamek Kigozi has been appointed to take over Kawala’s former role as Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson.
The Police Spokesperson, Rusoke confirmed the appointment of SP Kawala and said SSP have been taken to Press and Publication department.
Observers say Kawala’s appointment signals a renewed focus on timely public communication, media engagement, and fostering trust between the police and Kampala’s residents.
