The gentle sugar-scented breeze of Masindi will feel deceptively sweet when the elite packs of professionals and gross players step onto the opening tee today.
Jinja-bred Grace Kasango – last year’s champion among the professionals – knows that defending a title at Kinyara is a golfer’s toughest grind. ‘The course is tight, the greens are small, and the competition is ruthless,’ he admitted on the eve of play. ‘But I’m ready to give it everything again.’
Masindi’s own Joseph Kasozi, who lit up the 26th edition with 216 gross over three rounds, faces a stacked field that reads like a roll-call of Uganda’s finest: reigning Uganda Amateur Open champion Joseph Cwinya-ai, Reagan Akena, Andrew Ssekibejja, Peter Tumusiime, John Musiimenta, Ibrahim Bagalana and the evergreen Michael Tumusiime.
In the ladies’ division, Lillian Koowe seeks another sweet harvest against an inspired chasing pack.
Sweet legacy
Now in its 27th edition, the Kinyara Open stands tall as Uganda’s oldest and most enduring upcountry major – a pillar of sport and community for the people of Masindi.
‘This year’s tournament promises to be bigger and better, with more prizes across all categories. It’s also our way of giving back to the community,’ said Moses Enzama, Kinyara Golf Club captain, after officially launching the event at Uganda Golf Club on November 6.
Francis Mugerwa, Public Relations Officer of Kinyara Sugar Ltd, added: ‘We are proud to celebrate 27 years of golfing excellence. We have expanded categories, raised the prize purse and continued to use golf as a bridge to connect business, community and tourism in Masindi.’
Money and magic
With the backing of seven leading insurance companies – ICEA Lion, Liaison Group, MUA, GoldStar Insurance, Sanlam, Allianz and Old Mutual – the sponsors have injected no less than Shs100m into the 2025 edition.
ICEA Lion alone handed over a Shs 30 million dummy cheque, reaffirming its belief in sport as a sustainability driver. ‘We’re proud to back an event that promotes healthy living and community spirit,’ said Moses Mugalu, Marketing and Communications Lead, ICEA Lion Uganda.
The professionals will battle for a Shs10m purse, while elite men’s and ladies’ gross categories carry Shs4m and Shs3m respectively.
And for the daring – half a tonne of sugar (500 kg) awaits anyone who can ace the par-3 7th hole. The hole-in-one prize is without doubt, fittingly, ‘irresistibly sweet.’
Full house
Over 150 players are already confirmed, with the organisers ready to stretch to 200 when the subsidiary and seniors’ categories (55+ years) join the fray on Saturday (November 15) after the elite groups complete their 54-hole strokeplay campaign.
‘We anticipate our biggest field yet,’ noted Enzama. ‘The enthusiasm is overwhelming. Golfers love Masindi because of the warmth of the people, the quality of the greens and the hospitality from Kinyara Sugar.’
