The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has paid tribute to Brig Gen (Rtd) Ali Nasuru Izaga, honouring him as a central figure in restoring peace and stability in the West Nile region.
The condolence message from the UPDF leadership, delivered by Maj Gen Dick Olum during the burial in Jabala Village, Yumbe District, described the late officer as a committed soldier whose legacy remains foundational to the country’s post-conflict recovery.
‘We join the family, relatives and friends at this difficult moment to mourn a comrade whom we shall always remember,’ said first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, in a message read by Gen Olum.
He hailed Brig Gen Izaga as a ‘historical leader’ whose dedication, discipline and resilience earned him respect across the force.
Brig Gen Izaga joined the Uganda Army on January 1, 1961 and served in multiple command and staff roles.
He is also remembered for his humility, kindness and generosity – qualities mourners said shaped a generation of peace-builders and community leaders.
Speaking for the family, his son Ali Apangu thanked President Museveni and Gen Kainerugaba for the support offered to the late officer during his service and after his passing.
Representing friends of the family, Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura said the late Brig Gen Izaga leaves behind a legacy that ‘will continue to influence the West Nile region and the country.’
He noted that the retired commander mentored many young people who have since taken up roles both within and outside the force.
Community elders said he remained close to the people of Yumbe even after retirement.
‘Brig Gen Izaga has been a peaceful and disciplined person. He was a symbol of reconciliation and a bridge between former fighters and the government and his death is a big loss to the people of Yumbe and West Nile,’ said elder Yassin Ari.
Yumbe District Chairperson Abdulmutalib Asiku described him as a hero who ‘liberated this district and the region,’ noting that residents recently marked 23 years of relative peace.
‘When these people came out of the bush, they agreed with the government of Uganda. a lot has been implemented but there are few areas that need the attention of the government,’ he said.
As a top commander of the UNRF II rebel group led by the late Gen Ali Bamuze, Brig Gen Izaga played a key role in negotiations that produced the 2002 peace agreement. He was later integrated into the UPDF, where he served until retirement.
The burial drew UPDF generals, senior officers, MPs, cultural and political leaders, clergy and local dignitaries.
