Uganda’s netball team, the She Cranes, started their Africa Netball Championship campaign on a high, winning all their group fixtures, walloping hosts Malawi in the semi-finals before losing to South Africa in the final.
Uganda easily cruised past Malawi 46-33 to book a final with defending champions South Africa, which ended 56-34.
The She Cranes, who looked exhausted, probably from the previous games, put up little fight against the Proteas.
South Africa set the pace right from the first whistle, registering a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Through their brutal defense that disarmed Uganda’s attackers, South Africa extended their lead to 11 goals at halftime, which stretched to 17 in the third quarter and finally a 56-34 win that saw the Spar Proteas retain the trophy.
Uganda has already qualified for the 2027 Netball World Cup, and they need to correct their mistakes if they are to perform well at the upcoming event.
‘We are going back to the drawing board and correcting some mistakes. I hope we shall come back stronger,’ said Captain Rachael Nanyonga.
The next Africa Netball Championship will be hosted by Kenya.
