Wind signals were lifted as Tropical Depression Maymay is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area by Friday morning, the state weather bureau said Thursday night.
In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Maymay was last estimated at 290 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. It maintained its speed of 35 kilometers per hour (kph) while moving east-southeastward.
Maymay also maintained its strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kph and gusts of up to 55 kph.
‘Maymay is expected to dissipate and become a low-pressure area by Friday morning. It will become a trough of Typhoon Dolphin,’ Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said in Filipino.
Badrina also said that although Typhoon Dolphin is not expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), it will enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing rains over the weekend.
‘A large part of Luzon, especially its western section, will continue to experience rains through the weekend because even if the tropical depression inside the PAR is expected to dissipate, Typhoon Dolphin will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing heavy rains through the weekend,’ he added.
He also said the southwest monsoon and Maymay’s circulation will bring strong gale-force gusts over most parts of the country from Thursday to Saturday.
Meanwhile, a gale warning remains in effect over the seaboard of Extreme Northern Luzon.
