Golola, Fungu gearing up for epic rematch

When Moses Golola and Hamza Keeya share the ring again on January 1, it will be their second chance to deliver some of the promises they made before and after their first faceoff at Akamwesi Complex on December 26, 2022.

Keeya, aka General Fungu, vowed to beat Golola into retirement. But Golola refused to be beaten and ended up the winner by split decision, albeit controversially.

Golola himself declared that he is done with fighting local opponents because they no longer give him enough challenge. But here he is, warming up for the same Ugandan he fought three years ago.

But both fighters meet again at the same venue-Akamwesi-seeking to prove a point in the five-round non-title fight. Fungu wants to prove he was the better fighter on the cold Monday night in 2022 only to be robbed of the victory, while Golola, who has beaten all Uganda’s best: Ronald Mugula, Titus Tugume, and Umar Semata, cannot lose to Fungu.

‘I want to start the year with victory,’ Golola said during the event launch at Meal Card Restaurant at Akamwesi. ‘Actually, I didn’t want this man to last beyond three rounds. But the promoter has not delivered his promises.

Fungu works in the city abattoir and called upon all people in the meat trade to support him. But when Golola’s turn to talk came, the master of mind games also poked a finger into Fungu’s fan base. ‘All my fans at all city abattoirs, please come in big numbers and witness how we slaughter this man.’

‘This is going to be a who-is-who affair. Fungu is good at boxing and at cardio but I am better conditioned.’

Golola added: ‘And this year, I am going to be different. I’m going to kick and punch him all over. And I’ll wrestle him like they wrestle cows in the abattoir. I’m just going to be too much for him.’

Golola has had a couple of fights in between but Fungu has not fought since losing to Golola in 2022. ‘I don’t fight just for the sake. That’s why I returned to challenge Golola. My friend, come ready because I am going to knock that head to pulp,’ Fungu warned.

Also on the card is Moses Musisi, Breaker Breaker, one of the two Ugandans who won at the KO Fight Night in Nairobi on December 5.

Musisi will take on Alex Ssekitto, aka KO, who mocked him as ‘a woman I’m going to wed.’

Musisi retaliated with a threat: ‘Nowadays, I’m a master of slitting throats. Yours might not survive.’
