Many Nigerians now use 5G routers for home and office internet because of their faster speeds and stronger network coverage. However, leaving a router with its default Wi-Fi password can allow neighbours or unknown users to connect and consume data without permission.
Changing the Wi-Fi password regularly is one of the easiest ways to improve network security and control who has access to the internet connection.
In this article, Tribune Online explains simple steps users can follow to change the Wi-Fi password on an MTN 5G router.
Connect to the router first
Before changing any settings, users must first connect their phone or computer to the MTN 5G router either through Wi-Fi or a network cable.
Without a direct connection to the router, the settings page may not open properly in the browser. Most routers also have the default Wi-Fi name and password printed on a sticker located underneath or at the back of the device.
Enter the admin username and password
Users will then be required to enter the router’s administrator login details.
In many cases, the default username and password are printed on a sticker underneath or behind the router, unless they were changed previously. Some routers may also use simple default login credentials such as ‘admin.’
Change the Wi-Fi password
After logging into the router dashboard, users can open the Wi-Fi or WLAN settings section to change the password.
The current Wi-Fi name, also known as the SSID, can also be changed at the same time. It is advisable to use a strong password that combines letters, numbers, and symbols instead of simple names or phone numbers.
Use WPA2 or WPA3 security
Most modern routers support WPA2 or WPA3 wireless security protection.
Users are generally advised to select WPA2 or WPA3 instead of older security types because newer encryption standards provide stronger protection against unauthorised access.
Save the settings and reconnect
After entering the new password, save the settings and allow the router to restart if required.
Once the changes take effect, all previously connected devices will disconnect automatically and will need to reconnect using the new password.
Restart the router if necessary
Some routers may experience temporary connection issues after the settings are updated. Manually restarting the router can help refresh the network and ensure the new configuration is properly applied.
