Salihu Mohammed Lukman-led G100, PDP, ADC, NDC, APM, PRP and SDP are stepping up efforts to forge a united opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, with leaders of the parties expected at a major unity summit in Abuja on August 18.
The G100 said it had held consultations with the six opposition parties, involving their national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates, in a bid to build consensus around a common political front.
According to a statement signed by Lukman on Monday, the consultations were deliberately kept away from public scrutiny to allow political leaders to engage frankly on sensitive issues surrounding opposition cooperation.
The group said the discussions had produced broad agreement on the need for greater collaboration, but acknowledged that translating the consensus into a workable alliance would require significant sacrifice and compromise.
‘Achieving a credible and effective opposition will require sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations,’ the G100 said.
The initiative builds on the Ibadan Declaration, where opposition parties resolved to work towards a single presidential candidate for 2027.
However, the push has suffered setbacks, including the withdrawal of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the earlier ADC-led coalition.
The G100 said the August 18 summit would focus on practical modalities for cooperation, stressing that fragmentation could weaken the opposition’s ability to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in the 2027 polls.
