Semi Ajayi leads Hull City to first-ever EPL win over Man United

Super Eagles of Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi scored the opener as newly promoted Hull City secured a historic 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

The Tigers were in front of their home fans at the MKM Stadium and capitalised fully on the raucous atmosphere to put the Red Devils to the sword on their return to the EPL after nine years.

Nobel Mendy scored the second goal as the home side made the most of set-piece opportunities to record the shock victory.

It was Hull City’s first-ever EPL win over Manchester United, with Ajayi marshalling a resolute defence while also making a decisive contribution in attack.

Manchester United fielded new signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in attack.

Hull City were unfazed by their opponents and took the lead through Ajayi, who bundled home a loose ball following a corner-kick delivery.

It was Ajayi’s first EPL goal in five years and Hull City’s first league goal in nine years. He also became the first Nigerian to score an EPL goal since Alex Iwobi in March.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side doubled their advantage in the 38th minute through Senegalese defender Mendy, who headed home from Slatter’s free-kick delivery to give Hull a two-goal lead at the break.

Marcus Rashford was introduced for Manchester United in the second half, while Michael Carrick’s side went close through Mbeumo and Harry Maguire.

However, the Old Trafford club suffered their first defeat to a newly promoted side in 13 matches. It was also Manchester United’s first opening-day defeat since 2021.

Hull City’s victory ended their long winless run against Manchester United in all competitions dating back to 1974, securing their first victory over the Red Devils in 52 years.
