Rebel leader of defunct group arrested

Joint Army and police forces on Friday arrested a former communist rebel leader in Nueva Ecija still wanted for attempted homicide and a firearms offense, the Philippine Army said on Saturday.

The Army identified the alleged rebel, John Lee Hondrado, alias ‘Lig-on,’ as a former member and ‘lie-low’ leader of the now-dismantled Kilusang Larangang Gerilya (KLG) in North Abra.

Hondrado’s capture involved personnel from the Army’s 501st and 703rd infantry brigades and 48th Infantry Battalion, and from the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Cordillera Administrative Region.

Army chief Lt. Gen. Donald Gumiran said the operation showed the military’s support for law enforcement and the implementation of judicial processes while observing due process, human rights and the rule of law.
