Questions arise over historical links between HRDC, MCP

…Observers revisit the 2019–2020 protest era amid claims that HRDC’s activism may have indirectly boosted MCP’s rise to power…

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Debate has resurfaced in Malawi’s political circles over the long-debated relationship between the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The HRDC, known for leading widespread anti-government protests between 2019 and 2020, played a major role in demanding electoral accountability following the disputed 2019 presidential election.

Those demonstrations eventually led to a landmark Constitutional Court ruling that annulled the election results, paving the way for a fresh poll in 2020 that brought Lazarus Chakwera of the MCP to power.

Some political analysts and critics have suggested that the HRDC’s activism may have indirectly benefited the MCP, given the timing and political climate of the protests.

Others, however, argue that HRDC’s actions were rooted in civic duty and the defense of democratic rights, rather than partisan alignment.

Following the 2020 elections, several figures who were active in HRDC leadership later joined government service under the MCP administration.

Among them were Luke Tembo, Billy Mayaya, and MacDonald Sembereka, who were appointed to diplomatic positions, and Timothy Mtambo, who was named Minister of Civic Education and National Unity.

Supporters of these appointments say the move reflected recognition of the activists’ contributions to democracy, while critics interpret it as confirmation of political alignment between the HRDC and the ruling party.

Neither HRDC nor MCP officials have publicly confirmed any formal alliance, maintaining that the coalition’s protests were a nonpartisan effort to strengthen Malawi’s democratic institutions.

Political observers note that the discussion highlights a broader issue in Malawi’s democracy — the complex intersection between civic activism and political power.

Timothy Mtambo’s alleged commitment to the DPP-AFORD Alliance: A hypocrisy exposed

In recent statements, Timothy Mtambo, once a prominent figure in Malawi’s street activism through the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), has claimed full commitment to supporting the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) in addressing Malawi’s economic challenges.

As AFORD’s Vice President, Mtambo insists that his allegiance lies with the current Mutharika administration and that any failure by this government would also reflect a failure for AFORD. However, a closer examination of Mtambo’s political trajectory and past declarations reveals a glaring contradiction that undermines the credibility of his newfound loyalty.

His claims are not only unfounded but deeply hypocritical, betraying both the AFORD agenda and the electorate’s expectations.

To begin with, Mtambo’s recent pivot to endorse the DPP-AFORD alliance starkly contrasts with public declarations he made just before and during the 2020-2024 election cycle.

At that time, Mtambo categorically distanced himself from the DPP, particularly condemning their choice of running mate, Jane Ansah.

He went beyond mere criticism, actively campaigning against the DPP, warning Malawians about the dangers of returning the party to power.

His vocal opposition was not a subtle disagreement but a full-throttle rejection of DPP’s political project, which logically means he was not supporting the AFORD agenda as it was formally aligned with DPP.

This contradiction calls into question the sincerity of Mtambo’s current assertions.

If Mtambo was truly committed to AFORD’s agenda, he would have supported the DPP-AFORD alliance from the beginning or at least remained consistent in his stance.

Instead, his previous actions reflect a deliberate choice to undermine the alliance, directly opposing the partnership that now, retrospectively, he claims to champion.

This flip-flop is not just a matter of political repositioning but a fundamental breach of trust with both his party and the citizens who followed his activism.

Mtambo’s role as AFORD Vice President should ideally mean he upholds and promotes the party’s interests consistently.

Yet, by publicly rejecting the very alliance that defines AFORD’s current political engagement, Mtambo effectively distanced himself from the party’s strategic direction.

His refusal to support the partnership with the DPP during critical electoral moments undermines his claim to be working in AFORD’s interest.

In essence, if he was not supporting the alliance, he was not truly working for AFORD’s agenda. This glaring inconsistency must be acknowledged and scrutinized.

Moreover, Mtambo’s narrative of shifting from activism to political consolidation appears to be a convenient cover for political self-preservation.

His insistence that Malawians should “give DPP and AFORD time and space” to deliver on promises sounds more like an attempt to shield his new political allies from scrutiny rather than a genuine call for national unity.

Given his previous aggressive activism, which was critical of government failures and corruption, this sudden transformation raises questions about the motivations behind his change of heart.

The context of Mtambo’s political evolution further complicates his claims.

His leadership in the HRDC was marked by vehement opposition to the ruling party’s governance, mobilizing citizens to demand accountability and justice.

To now claim allegiance to the same administration he once opposed suggests a significant departure from his previous principles.

While political realignments are not uncommon, Mtambo’s case is problematic because it appears to lack transparency and consistency, which are essential for credible leadership.

Adding to the complexity is Mtambo’s public denunciation of those who associate him with anti-government protests, labeling such claims as “false and malicious.” While it is true that he officially left HRDC over five years ago and that the coalition has since developed its own leadership, Mtambo’s past activism and public image are intrinsically linked to protest politics. His attempt to erase that legacy seems more like political damage control than an honest reflection of his history.

This selective memory undermines the authenticity of his current political stance and confuses the public about his real commitments.

Furthermore, Mtambo’s assertion that the failure of the Mutharika administration would equate to failure for AFORD conveniently ignores the complex dynamics within the alliance.

AFORD’s identity and political relevance have historically been distinct, with its own ideological positions and constituencies. By conflating AFORD’s fate with DPP’s success, Mtambo risks reducing the party to a mere appendage of DPP, eroding its independent voice.

This diminishes the significance of AFORD’s political agenda and raises legitimate concerns about whether Mtambo is prioritizing party principles or personal political gain.

From a broader perspective, the Malawian public deserves clarity and consistency from their leaders.

Mtambo’s contradictory positions breed cynicism and skepticism, especially among those who supported him during his activist days.

Leadership is tested not only by the ability to adapt but also by the courage to remain principled amidst changing political landscapes.

Mtambo’s apparent abandonment of his previous stance without adequate explanation or accountability damages his credibility and leaves many questioning the authenticity of his current commitments.

It is also important to consider the implications of Mtambo’s position on Malawi’s democratic process.

By urging Malawians to stop “propaganda” and unite behind the government, he risks stifling legitimate dissent and political debate, which are vital in any healthy democracy.

His tone suggests a preference for political consolidation over inclusive governance and transparency, which could undermine efforts to hold the government accountable.

This is especially concerning given Malawi’s history of vibrant civil society activism, which Mtambo once championed.

Timothy Mtambo’s claims of full commitment to the DPP-AFORD alliance, premised on his role as AFORD Vice President, are fundamentally flawed and hypocritical.

His previous public rejection of the alliance, active campaigning against the DPP, and distancing from the coalition’s agenda expose a deep inconsistency in his political narrative.

Rather than embodying principled leadership, Mtambo’s current stance appears driven by political expediency and self-interest.

For the sake of transparency, accountability, and democratic integrity, it is crucial that these contradictions be thoroughly examined and openly discussed.

Only then can Malawians make informed judgments about the true nature of Mtambo’s political commitments and the future of the DPP-AFORD alliance.

“Nigeria could have been world power if it kept its oil wealth”-Senegalese-American singer Akon

….The Senegalese-American star says Lagos would rival London and New York if Nigeria had retained control of its natural resources since independence.

NEW YORK-(MaraviPost)-Senegalese-American singer and entrepreneur Akon has sparked global debate after claiming that Nigeria could have become one of the most powerful nations on earth if it had managed to retain full control of its oil revenues since gaining independence in 1960.

In an Instagram post that quickly went viral, Akon reflected on the untapped potential of Africa’s most populous nation, imagining a world where Nigeria’s immense oil wealth remained entirely in the hands of its people.

He suggested that in such an alternate reality, Lagos would have evolved into a global financial center rivaling London and New York, while Nigerian universities would have become world leaders in science, innovation, and technology.

Akon further noted that Nollywood — already Africa’s largest film industry — could have surpassed Hollywood in global influence, making Nigeria a beacon of cultural and economic strength for the continent.

The artist lamented the historical exploitation of Africa’s natural resources by foreign powers, saying the continent has paid a heavy price for allowing outsiders to dictate its economic path.

He stressed that while the past cannot be undone, Africa still has the chance to reclaim control over its resources, build stronger institutions, and shape its own destiny.

“Africa doesn’t need aid,” Akon wrote. “What it needs is ownership — of its land, its energy, its talent, and its future.”

His comments have reignited discussions on resource sovereignty, governance, and economic independence in Africa — themes that continue to shape debates about the continent’s role in the global economy.

High Court reserves ruling in cross-border car ownership dispute: Zimbabwean vs Mukora Malawian Kawanga

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The High Court in Lilongwe has reserved its ruling in a legal battle between Zimbabwean businessman Nesbert Mukora and Malawian entrepreneur Yollam Kawanga over ownership of a Toyota Land Cruiser (registration number LT07MGGP), which is suspected to have been stolen in South Africa before being sold in Malawi.

The case was heard in a closed-door session before Judge Simeon Mdeza on Wednesday.

Mukora, who owns a luxury car hire company in Zimbabwe, is challenging a September court decision that allowed Kawanga to continue using the disputed vehicle.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, Mukora’s lawyer Khwima Mchizi argued that the court order transferring the vehicle to Kawanga was irregularly obtained, as his client was not served with summons.

He said:“The order that was used to obtain the vehicle from the Malawi Police was irregular because my client was never served. The best course of action is to return the vehicle to police custody, where both parties’ interests can be safeguarded pending final determination.”

On his part, Kawanga’s lawyer Gift Katundu urged the court to dismiss Mukora’s application for a stay of execution, arguing that it lacks merit and should be dismissed with costs.

Kawanga insisted he is an innocent buyer, saying he purchased the SUV from Jolene Margaret Janse Van Vuuren, a South African national, in April this year for K168 million.

He said before completing the transaction, the vehicle was taken to the Interpol Desk at the Malawi Police Service Headquarters, where checks reportedly confirmed it was not listed as stolen anywhere in the world.

While Mukora, claimed the vehicle was stolen from him in South Africa by the same woman before it was smuggled into Malawi and sold.

The court is expected to announce its ruling on the matter soon.

Bizarre! Man found inside 8-meter python in Indonesia shocks the World

…..Villagers discover missing farmer swallowed whole, reigniting fears of giant snakes lurking in rural areas…

Villagers in a remote Indonesian community were left in shock and disbelief when rescuers uncovered the body of a missing man inside the swollen belly of a massive python measuring nearly eight meters in length.

The tragic discovery came after an overnight search for the man, who had disappeared while walking home from his plantation.

According to local reports, the search party followed clues along a jungle path before coming across the enormous snake, whose midsection appeared unnaturally bloated.

When the villagers decided to cut open the python, they were horrified to find the body of the missing man inside, still fully clothed — a grim confirmation of their worst fears.

Witnesses described the scene as “unimaginable” and “beyond anything we’ve ever seen.”

News of the shocking event quickly spread across Indonesia and beyond, drawing global attention and reigniting discussions about the dangers posed by the region’s large reticulated pythons — among the world’s longest and most powerful snakes.

Experts say that while such cases are extremely rare, pythons have been known to prey on large animals, and in very isolated incidents, humans.

The reptiles kill by constriction, wrapping around their victim and suffocating them before swallowing their prey whole.

Wildlife specialists are now investigating how the incident occurred, suggesting that factors such as habitat encroachment and shrinking food sources may have increased the likelihood of human–python encounters.

The tragedy has left the village shaken, serving as a chilling reminder of nature’s raw power — and the thin line that sometimes separates myth from terrifying reality.

2025 Chipiku Premier League: Eagles soar high after defeating TN Stars

…Eagles 3-0 TN Stars

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Blue Eagles Reserve continues soaring high on the summit of the MK25 million Chipiku Stores Premier Division League table following their Wednesday’s 3-0 thumping of TN Stars FC at Nankhaka Stadium.

The Cops broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through Blessings Makhula who slotted the ball into the net from Welliex Ngwenya’s cross.

The home side continued with their dominance in the half, though they wasted numerous scoring opportunities through Innocent Dzimbira and Enock Jobo until the final whistle of the first stanza came with the scoreline at 1-0.

In the second half, the visitors made several changes as Rashid Gunga, Isaac Moses and George Lutepo made their way onto the pitch for Jembason Nyasulu, Jorden Nthala and Kondwani Chirambo.

The substitutions brought stability to the TN Stars squad as they pushed for an equalizer, with Noah Malizwe operating on the wing and troubling the Eagles defense led by Alexander Chigawa on several occasions.

However, their efforts did not bear any fruit as the home side defended well.

In the 54th minute, Chrispin Singano extended Eagles Reserve’s lead, scoring from a rebound after Enock Jobo’s effort was initially saved by goalkeeper Precious Tambala.

Singano made no mistake, sending the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Just as the visitors thought they might reduce the deficit, Eagles stretched their lead in the 57th minute through Moses Mwale, who received a stunning pass from Chrispin Singano to make it 3-0.

This time it was beyond the reach of Stars, who failed to shine at Nankhaka Stadium.

Blue Eagles assistant coach Alupheus Nyoni made a tactical change in the 66th minute, opting to rest some players as Ashley Chimseu and Blessings Kavulala replaced Enock Jobo and Blessings Makhula.

The young Cops continued pressing, but their efforts were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Precious Tambala.

Eagles made triple changes in the 77th minute as Misheck Jere, Martin Andrew and Kondwani Silva replaced Welliex Ngwenya, Stacio Chibala and goalkeeper Wisdom Khuni.

With the changes, the home side pinned the visitors in their own half, making it difficult for Stars to penetrate until the final whistle confirmed the 3-0 victory for the home side.

Chrispin Singano was later voted player of the match and received MK50,000 from the Central Region Football Association (CRFA).

In a post-match interview, Blue Eagles Reserve assistant coach Alupheus Nyoni praised his charges for the victory, revealing they capitalized on their opponents’ delay on the ball.

“Indeed we have won 3-0. We took our chances which we created, though we were supposed to score more,” he said.

TN Stars FC head coach Limbani Mwakhwawa acknowledged the defeat, saying his boys respected the home team, especially in the first half.

“Second half we came out as a changed side after we talked to the boys,” Mwakhwawa said.

The victory has now brought Eagles Reserve’s points tally to 44 from 18 games, having managed to win 14 games, draw 2 and lose 2.

They are six points clear of second-placed Extreme FC, who have 38 points following their 2-0 victory over Shire Wimbe at Owen Malijani ground in Mchinji.

Tonny Phiri scored the first goal for Extreme in the 27th minute before Jana Buleya netted the second for the Mchinji

-based side. Buleya was later voted man of the match.

Meanwhile, Chisomo Academy based in Kasungu Municipality has been awarded the maximum points without kicking the ball as Green Rangers FC failed to show up at Kasungu Stadium for the match.

Mchinji Boma Strikers produced a massive 1-0 away win over Silver Strikers FC at ADL ground in Lilongwe.
