Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has responded to recent comments by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, accusing him of making unfounded criticisms merely to attract media attention.

Obi had recently visited the LEA Primary School in Kubwa, Abuja, where he described the condition of the school as a ‘national disgrace’ and said it reflected the country’s lack of commitment to education.

He specifically noted that classrooms lacked chairs and toilets.

Obi also stated that, during his time as governor of Anambra State, he visited all primary and secondary schools and left public funds for the state upon leaving office.

But in a statement, Olayinka accused Obi of constant criticism of government actions. He countered that the current FCT administration, under Wike, is renovating 73 schools across the six Area Councils, with 21 already completed.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stated that the people claiming genocide against Christians in Nigeria are out to destroy the country’s unity.

The minister stated this on Monday in Abuja while speaking at the National Unveiling of the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF Abuja 2026), with the Theme, ‘Responsible Communication: The Voice of the World.’

He said Nigeria must come to terms with existential reputational threats to its national brand, ‘in which external purveyors of untruth are mischaracterizing our nation as a destination for a so-called persecution of people based on their religious faiths.’

For the umpteenth time, I am emphatic that there’s no iota of truth in the claim of a ‘Christian Genocide’ in Nigeria. The Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, has inaugurated the Aviation Monitoring Committee for the 2026 Hajj exercise.

The Chairman charged the newly inaugurated committee to function as diligent gatekeepers, entrusted with the critical mandate of undertaking transparent and impartial monitoring of all aviation matters.

‘Our mission is straightforward and solemn to guarantee safe, secure, and dignified air transport for pilgrims. We will not compromise the safety of Nigerian pilgrims,’ Prince Elegushi assured.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference included: ‘Reviewing, participating and evaluating all documents submitted by applicant airlines and cargo carriers for the 2026 Hajj. Inspecting and assessing the readiness of designated airports for Hajj operations. Making observations and recommendations on airport preparedness. Monitoring inbound and outbound flights at all departure centres to ensure compliance with airlift agreements and industry standards, among others.’

The League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has expressed concern over a strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying the industrial dispute often disrupts academic sessions and weakens the quality of education.

In a statement on Monday, the secretary general of the body, Imam Tajudeen Adewunmi, urged the Federal Government to act quickly and decisively to find a permanent solution to the problems.

According to the statement, the lingering strike has placed a financial burden on parents and guardians who cover living expenses and housing costs even while schools are closed.

The statement read in part: ‘As religious leaders, we cannot remain silent when the education of our youths and the stability of our nation are repeatedly placed in jeopardy. Each round of strike leaves behind painful scars. Students are trapped in prolonged academic calendars, unable to graduate when expected. ‘Parents and guardians are weighed down financially, paying for accommodation and living expenses even while schools remain shut. Families endure emotional stress as uncertainty about the future of their children grows heavier. Beyond this, the long periods of idleness expose young people to vices such as crime, drug abuse and restlessness, problems that later spill over into our communities.

‘The effect on the nation is equally profound. Frequent disruptions weaken the quality of education, producing graduates who are less competitive globally. Continuous strikes encourage brain drain, as both students and lecturers seek stability abroad. Local businesses around campuses collapse during closures, affecting livelihoods. More dangerously, the repeated instability erodes trust in our public institutions, weakening the hope and faith of citizens in the future of Nigeria.

‘We therefore appeal to the Federal Government to take urgent and concrete steps toward resolving these issues once and for all. This includes ensuring fair and sustainable remuneration for lecturers, improving infrastructure and teaching facilities across universities and providing continuous funding for research and innovation to drive national development.’

The body also called on the ASUU leadership to engage in dialogue with sincerity and respect for one another, acknowledging that while complaints are legitimate, protracted strikes only make things worse for students, families, and the country as a whole.
