Troops of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have arrested 28 suspected oil thieves, deactivated four illegal refining sites, and seized over 290,000 litres of stolen products across the Niger Delta region.

In a statement on Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, said the arrest was in conjunction with other security agencies, who have been consolidating the Army efforts in the ongoing Anti-Crude Oil Theft operations in the Niger Delta Region.

He said the operations, conducted between October 6 and 19, 2025, led to the arrest of 28 Suspected oil thieves, when the troops acted on credible intelligence on the illegal oil activities.

He said: ‘Several operations were conducted across Rivers State with tremendous successes recorded. At Okrika in Okrika Local Government Area (LGA), two wooden boats were intercepted while loading Premium Motor Spirit from a vessel offloading the product at a jetty. ‘Additionally, two boats were intercepted at Okrika, with one loaded with over 33,000 litres of stolen products at a jetty in Okrika. Relatedly, another wooden boat loaded with over 5,000 litres of stolen products was also intercepted in the area.

‘In a related development, following a tip-off on illegal oil bunkering activities around a pipeline after Sterling Global Company Road, Akpabo, at Elele Alimini in Emohua LGA, troops swung into action and impounded a tanker with registration number Rivers JJN 287 ZU coming out of the pipeline right of way.

‘The vehicle was suspected to have loaded about 90,000 litres of stolen products from the site. Two suspects, the driver and his motor boy, were taken into custody.

‘Also, at Okolomade in Abua/Odual LGA, over 2,600 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil were recovered.

‘Along Imo River, troops deactivated two illegal refining sites and seized three drum pots, three receivers, and over 2,500 litres of stolen crude around Obuzor, Asa Asa in Ukwa West LGA of Abia State.

‘At Orashi River waterside, two wooden boats were intercepted with over 700 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene recovered. Six suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures.

‘In Delta State, troops acted on credible intelligence on the activities of oil thieves along the PAN Ocean Pipeline right of way in Ethiope East LGA. On sighting troops, the criminals fled. However, one suspect was arrested and various items recovered.

‘These included vandalized pipes, hoses, a large quantity of Bagco sacks, and leather materials. Others included one Peugeot 406 car, a Camry car, one Toyota Jeep, as well as a lorry van loaded with over 1,650 litres of stolen products.

‘Additionally, troops on pipeline surveillance along the Midwestern Oil and Gas Pipeline R right of way at Umusan-Obodogwa in Ndokwa West LGA intercepted a Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number Enugu VE 174 ENU conveying 24 pieces of 14-inch pipes and three gas cylinders. Two persons were arrested.

‘The pipes may have been vandalized from the SEPCO Oil and Gas pipeline at Kwale. Furthermore, around Eruemukohwarien in Ughelli North LGA, a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number Delta PTN 926 XA was intercepted, loaded with ten drums filled with 2,500 litres of condensates. The driver was arrested.

‘In Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States, troops have scaled up both kinetic and non-kinetic operations, effectively dominating the operational landscape and thereby denying criminal elements the freedom of action.

‘The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, has commended the troops for the exploits recorded. The GOC, further charged them to sustain the operational tempo in clamping down on economic saboteurs and other associated crimes in the Niger Delta Region.’

To avoid any confusion and misinformation about his original intent, he categorically made it clear during an inspection visit of the projects yesterday, that, ‘These projects are a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s healthcare system through the Renewed Hope Agenda.’

The Distinguished Senator, is, without any hesitation, one of the leading politicians from the North, who consistently and persistently display their genuine support to President Tinubu’s deserving policies for national development. Renewed Hope Agenda inclusive.

To him, he made it very clear that, his intervention with such signature projects are tandem with Tinubu’s good policy. Kwara turned the page on manual processing of land matters on Monday as Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq unveiled an automation system which enables applicants to get titles for their land between two weeks and 30 working days – once all conditions have been met.

‘Today marks another bold step in our commitment to innovation, transparency, and efficiency in public service delivery,’ the Governor said at the launch of the Kwara State Geographic Land Information Service (KW-GIS)-based digital land information system, in Ilorin.

‘For decades, the process of land administration in many states, including Kwara, has been characterized by manual records, inefficiencies, and delays that discourage investors, slow down property transactions, and create room for abuse.

‘Our administration made a decision to change that narrative. The KW-GIS Digital Land Information System represented a complete transformation in how land records are managed in Kwara State. It provides a modern, automated, transparent platform that ensures every parcel of land in the state is digitally captured, documented, and easily retrievable.’

He said the new system eliminates duplication and loss of land records, shortens processing time for C of O and other land documents, enhances revenue generation, and promotes investor confidence by ensuring the certainty and security of land ownership.

He called the launch a milestone in the state’s ease of doing business reforms, urging all stakeholders to embrace the new system.

The event was attended by top government officials at all levels, lawmakers, traditional rulers, captains of industry, trade unionists and market leaders, among others.

Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of the Kwara State Ease of Doing Business Council (EODBC), Dr Hauwa Nuru, said the initiative positions the state as a national leader in several World Bank-supported programmes, including NG-CARES, SABER, and the HOPE Program (HOPE EDU, HOPE PHC, and HOPE GOV).

‘This outstanding progress is a testament to Your Excellency’s unwavering commitment to institutional reforms, accountability, and sustainable development,’ she said.

Dr Nuru commended members of the Council for their dedication, and the KW-GIS team and consultant and technical partners for working tirelessly to bring the vision to life.

Executive Chairman, State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), Mrs Folashade Omoniyi, said the new system ‘bridges longstanding gaps in land administration, documentation, and record accuracy by leveraging modern technology to establish a transparent and efficient land management system’.

She said the integration of KW-IRS online payment platform with KW-GIS system further complements the digital advancement.

‘Investors, titleholders, and the general public can now register land, process CofO, obtain building approvals, and make all related payments online, seamlessly and transparently reducing bureaucracy and strengthening public trust,’ she said.

‘In tandem with this progress, the State Government has reviewed and harmonized existing laws governing land administration to align with modern standards. These reforms guarantee clarity, fairness, and efficiency in property rights, title documentation, and investment transactions.’

Executive Secretary, KW-GIS, Alhaji Sulyman Abdulkareem, said the launch of the digital platform is a milestone in the history of land administration.

Speaking on the Kwara Smart City project, Abdulkareem promised to digitize the land and ensure that all necessary documents are archived for future generations, saying this will guide against encroachment.

He also commended AbdulRazaq for approving the release of N560 million as compensation for parts of the land acquired for the Smart City project.

The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the allegation of signature forgery and cloning raised by the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, saying that Anyanwu signed the letter himself.

Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the party, while addressing journalists at the party headquarters disclosed that Anyanwu personally signed the letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He also added that the letter was signed in the presence of state governors elected on the platform of the PDP NWC members and other party chieftains.

Ologunagba, who was in company of other NWC members, said the the letters were signed just before the 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25. According to him, even at the NEC meeting, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Bala Mohammed, announced to NEC members that the Letters have been signed by the National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagun and Anyanwu.

He added that the signing took place in the presence Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal; former Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Turaki, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

He called on the investigating agencies and Nigerians to ask those he mentioned whether the National Secretary signed the letter in their presence or not.

He also disclosed that the move by Anyanwu is part of the antecedents of those who want to stop the National convention in November.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended its National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dr. Usani Uguru Usani, over alleged misconduct.

The decision followed a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) of the ADC, Cross River State Chapter, held on October 15, 2025.

In a statement signed by Hon. James Otudor, the ADC’s State Publicity Secretary, on Monday in Abuja, the party said Dr. Usani’s recent conduct was inconsistent with the provisions of the ADC’s constitution.

The party said the State Working Committee deliberated extensively on several petitions and reports that accused Dr. Usani of anti-party activities, insubordination to constituted authority, and other acts capable of undermining the image, cohesion, and electoral prospects of the ADC before reaching the decision. ‘In accordance with the party’s constitution and disciplinary procedures, Dr. Usani’s suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant party organs,’ the party said.

The committee also raised issues regarding the appointment of Ms. Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, expressing dissatisfaction over what it described as a lack of consultation with the state leadership prior to her appointment.

It observed that Ms. Wayas has not engaged with the Cross River State leadership since assuming the role, adding that her current disposition and loyalty appear to be skewed against the unity and growth of the ADC in the state.

‘Consequently, the SWC urged the national leadership to review her appointment and replace her with a competent, credible, and media-savvy individual from Cross River State with a verifiable record of commitment to the ideals of the ADC.

‘In addition, the Cross River ADC expressed concern over certain individuals under the Coalition Movement who publicly declared their intention to join the ADC but have yet to formalize their membership months after doing so.

‘While acknowledging that party registration is a continuous process, the committee warned that the ADC will not tolerate dual membership or allow its platform to be used by individuals pursuing multiple partisan interests.

‘It further noted that some coalition members who participated in ADC strategy meetings have since accepted caretaker or leadership positions in their former political parties.’

The statement directed all coalition leaders and intending members to complete their registration at their respective ward levels within seven days, ending Saturday, October 25, 2025, or risk exclusion from leadership and decision-making processes within the party.

A Shari’a Court sitting in Danbare, Kano State, has arraigned a man, Malam Shaddadu, for allegedly selling his son’s house without his consent.

The complainant, Muhammad Shaddadu, told the court that his father had previously bought two tricycles for his half-brothers.

He said tragedy struck when one of them was attacked and killed by hoodlums, who also stole his tricycle.

Muhammad explained that his father wrongly blamed him for the incident, took him to court, and he was subsequently remanded in prison. However, he said the court later acquitted him of all charges.

Upon his return home, Muhammad alleged that his father had sold his house, under the assumption that he would not return.

However, when the charge was read, the father denied the allegation and pleaded not guilty.

In his ruling, the presiding judge, Malam Munzali Idris Gwadabe, observed that the matter was a family dispute between father and son.

He subsequently transferred the case to the Court of Arbitration for reconciliation between the parties.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called for disciplinary measures against Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Onanuga accused the lawyer of professional misconduct after he participated in a protest in Abuja demanding the release of his client.

Ejimakor was among demonstrators led by activist, Omoyele Sowore, who converged on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday to call for Kanu’s freedom.

The IPOB leader has remained in custody since his re-arrest in 2021 and is currently facing trial on charges bordering on treasonable felony. Reacting to the protest, Onanuga took to his official X handle to criticise Ejimakor’s action, describing it as ‘shambolic’ and unbecoming of a legal practitioner.

‘I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest,’ Onanuga wrote.

‘As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court.

‘The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr. Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu.’

The presidential aide accused Ejimakor of abandoning his professional responsibilities in favour of what he termed ‘extra-legal tactics’ aimed at influencing judicial proceedings.

‘Rather than focusing on preparing a strong case, Mr. Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics, joining a career anarchist, to influence the process,’ Onanuga said.

He further questioned the lawyer’s adherence to professional ethics and urged relevant legal bodies to intervene.

‘Ejimakor’s action questions his commitment to the ethics of the legal profession. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for the unethical conduct of the bearded lawyer,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Ejimakor said he had been arrested alongside some protesters and taken to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command headquarters in Abuja.

The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), which is responsible for maintaining ethical standards within the profession, is yet to issue any statement regarding Onanuga’s call.

This gap raises urgent concerns about whether the rights of children in Nigeria are protected in practice or only on paper.

Access to justice for children goes beyond legal recognition; it is about creating a framework where their voices are heard, their needs addressed, and their best interests prioritized. A child justice system must be accessible, fair, and sensitive to the unique realities of childhood, especially for those from vulnerable backgrounds. As Nigeria continues to pursue its commitments under the Child Rights Act of 2003 and international treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, it is imperative that the gap between the law and people’s experience is aligned.

Nigeria’s child protection legal framework is based on constitutional provisions, national laws, and international treaties. The 1999 Constitution provides the foundation for children’s rights under its general human rights provisions. It guarantees the right to life, ensuring that no one, including a child, shall be deprived of life except under lawful circumstances. It also mandates the government to provide free and compulsory education at the primary level and encourages the provision of university education and the promotion of science and technology. While not consolidated in a single clause, the Constitution’s prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment covers the protection of children from exploitation, trafficking, and forced labour. Although the Constitution lays a broad foundation, it does not address child-specific issues in detail. That responsibility falls to the Child Rights Act of 2003, Nigeria’s principal legislation for the protection and welfare of children. The Act was enacted to domesticate the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. It provides a comprehensive framework that recognizes every child’s right to survival, development, and protection from harm. It also guarantees every child free, compulsory, and quality education, consistent with the constitutional mandate. The Act expressly prohibits harmful cultural practices such as child marriage, child labour, trafficking, and the recruitment of children in armed conflict, emphasizing the right of every child to be protected from violence and exploitation.

On matters of health, the Child Rights Act provides that every child is entitled to the best attainable state of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It places an obligation on governments, parents, guardians, and institutions to ensure that children enjoy access to basic healthcare, nutrition, and safe environments necessary for their development.

Complementing these protections, the Labour Act places strict limits on child labour. It prohibits the employment of children in any form of work that could endanger their health, education, or development. Only light work performed under family supervision, such as domestic or agricultural tasks, may be permitted, provided it does not pose harm to the child’s physical or mental well-being. No child under sixteen may be employed without parental consent, nor required to work overnight or carry loads too heavy for their physical capacity. These provisions, while commendable, continue to face challenges of enforcement in parts of the country where child labour remains prevalent.

Access to justice is at the heart of human rights protection. For Nigerian children, however, it remains a difficult right to exercise. The Child Rights Act addresses this by establishing Family Courts at both the High Court and Magistrate levels to handle matters involving children. These courts are designed to operate in a child-sensitive manner, ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and protection throughout the legal process. The Act mandates that all proceedings must prioritize the best interests of the child, provide for free legal aid, and prohibit the publication of any child’s identity. The goal is to ensure that children who come into contact with the law are treated with dignity, compassion, and fairness.

In practice, however, several barriers continue to hinder children’s access to justice in Nigeria. Illiteracy remains a major factor, as many children and their parents are unaware of their legal rights or how to seek redress. Cultural norms in some communities discourage the reporting of abuse or exploitation, particularly when the perpetrator is a family member. The judicial process itself often lacks child-friendly mechanisms, with few specialized personnel or safe spaces where children can give evidence comfortably. Poverty further compounds these problems, as most families cannot afford legal services or the costs of pursuing cases through the courts. Even when cases are filed, prolonged delays and adjournments discourage victims and their families from seeing justice through to conclusion.

In addressing these challenges, the establishment of Family Courts is a positive step in the right direction; however, implementation and use must be deepened through training, funding, and public awareness. Child-friendly procedures, free legal representation, and community-based reporting mechanisms of abuses are also essential. Collaboration among government institutions, civil society, and international partners such as UNICEF can further strengthen advocacy and ensure that the rights of children are not lost in bureaucratic inefficiency.

Nigeria’s ratification of international conventions such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child underscores its commitment to protecting the rights of children. The real test, however, lies in translating those commitments into consistent action at every level of federal, state, and local government.

Ultimately, for Nigeria, ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, can access justice and protection is fundamental to building a just and equitable society. Strengthening legal institutions, expanding access to education, and raising public awareness are vital steps toward realizing that vision, and only then can the promise of justice for children become a general reality all over the country.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Kano has directed the Kano State Hisbah Board to facilitate the marriage of two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, within 60 days.

The order followed their recent appearance in viral videos deemed ‘indecent’ by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board.

The clips, which showed the duo engaging in romantic gestures, were described by authorities as contrary to the moral and religious values upheld in the state.

Presiding over the matter on Monday, Magistrate Halima Wali warned that failure to conduct the marriage within the stipulated timeframe would be treated as contempt of court. The court also mandated the Chairman of the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board to oversee the implementation of the marriage order.

Daily Trust recalls that the two TikTokers were arraigned before the court in recent weeks for allegedly producing and circulating obscene content on social media.

Mai Wushirya was earlier remanded in a correctional facility after clips showing him engaging in what authorities described as ‘immoral and demeaning acts’ with the female content creator went viral.

The Censorship Board maintained that the videos violated state laws prohibiting the production and distribution of sexually suggestive or obscene material.
