Kano to build N586m weighbridge facilities

The Kano State Government has approved the construction of weighbridge facilities worth N586.5 million to enhance trade regulation, logistics efficiency, and revenue generation across the state.

The project, approved during the 33rd Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, will see weighbridges built in Doguwa Local Government Area and five major entry points into the state.

According to the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the initiative aims to check vehicle overloading, safeguard road infrastructure, and ensure accurate taxation on goods transported within and outside the state.

He said the move aligns with the government’s broader economic agenda to promote a business-friendly environment and position Kano as a regional logistics hub.

The weighbridge project, according to the commissioner, will be under the supervision of the state’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and will form part of the administration’s N19 billion investments in key sectors.

The council also approved strategic policy initiatives aimed at boosting housing development, energy sufficiency, and industrial growth, which include the construction of 50 low-cost housing units across local government areas, the acquisition of majority shares in KEDCO to promote a reliable power supply, and the adoption of the Kano State Electricity Policy to guide the state’s renewable energy drive.

100 girls receive lessons in taekwondo for self-defence

No fewer than 100 female athletes across Nigeria have been trained in the game of taekwondo for self-defence and leadership skills against gender-based violence (GBV).

Participants at the training which was held in Benin City were drawn from Abia, Cross River, Delta, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti State.

Speaking during the two-day training at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, the Programme Officer, Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEP), Tony Eleme, said the foundation is using sports, especially taekwondo and football, to empower girls with self-confidence, self-esteem, and leadership skills while raising awareness about GBV.

According to him, the group believes that when the girl-child is empowered, the whole nation is empowered.

He noted that because gender-based violence is rising, there was the urgent need to help teenage girls to defend themselves, stay confident, and recognize when they are being abused.

‘Sometimes these girls are exploited without even realizing it. Through sports and education, we’re building their awareness and resilience,’ he stated.

On his part, Dr. Nosakhare Erumwunse, the Edo Coordinator of the Child Protection Network Nigeria, noted that GBV affects both genders, though women and girls remain disproportionately impacted by over 70 percent.

He cautioned the participants against using the skills to engage in unnecessary fights, urging them to embrace discipline and focus on competence.

Erumwunse said any girl who has learned taekwondo is less likely to be raped because she knows how to defend herself and disarm an attacker.

BREAKING: Tension as pro-Wike camp moves to take over PDP secretariat

There is currently tension at Wadata Plaza, National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the factional loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), moved to take over the secretariat.

Following the crisis rocking the party, the Wike faction appointed Muhammed Abdulrahman as acting chairman of the party.

The National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of Umar Damagum had suspended Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary, and some other officials loyal to Wike.

In a retaliatory move, Wike faction also suspended Damagum and other key officials of the party and appointed Abdulrahman Mohammed as acting National Chairman.

Addressing journalists at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office of the PDP, Mohammed said he was moving to the PDP headquarters.

‘We are all aware of the current pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders and members. From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to being an opposition party for over 10 years now at the national level, from being a formidable opposition to a now humbled opposition owing to the unexplainable, unconscionable defections of Governors, Legislators and Council Chairmen, et al.’

‘I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and instrumentality of very critical stakeholders of this party,’ he said.

He said his job was to heal the party of its wounds and end factionalisation, reposition the party and make it law abiding.

Mohammed later moved into the secretariat to address his supporters.

However, Damagum supporters were also seen at the party headquarters but the police moved in to prevent any clash.

Daily Trust sighted at least 10 Hilux vans of the police across the secretariat.

Patients stranded, discharged as resident doctors strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) commenced an indefinite strike on Saturday, grounding activities in hospitals across the country.

Findings by Daily Trust showed that many health facilities where resident doctors provide essential services were largely deserted on Sunday, with only nurses on duty offering skeletal services.

NARD’s president, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, announced the commencement of the industrial action in a statement on Saturday.

This followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum earlier issued to the federal government.

NARD had confirmed plans to commence the strike on Saturday, November 1, 2025, after the government failed to meet its 30-day ultimatum.

According to Suleiman, the strike became inevitable after repeated failures by the government to implement agreements reached with the association despite several meetings, appeals, and warnings.

‘We embark on this total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike not out of desire but out of necessity.

‘Our decision follows the federal government’s continued neglect of our legitimate demands and the worsening state of Nigeria’s health system,’ Suleiman said.

He noted that resident doctors had exhausted all peaceful options, adding that their demands were focused on the survival of the nation’s healthcare system and not personal gain.

‘Our demands are not selfish nor politically motivated. They are centred on ensuring that doctors can provide safe, effective, and compassionate care in an environment that safeguards their physical and mental well-being,’ he said.

Among the key issues raised by NARD are unpaid arrears, poor working conditions, inadequate staffing, excessive workload, and the lack of essential medical infrastructure, which the doctors say have crippled healthcare delivery nationwide.

FG to release N11.9bn for doctors’ arrears

Meanwhile, the federal government has announced plans to release N11.9 billion within 72 hours to settle part of the salary and allowance arrears owed to medical professionals.

The announcement came hours after NARD began its indefinite strike.

In a statement on Saturday, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Alaba Balogun, said President Bola Tinubu has directed expedited payment of arrears to health workers.

He said the government had earlier released N10 billion in August to begin payment of seven months’ arrears arising from the 25-35 percent salary review for health workers.

‘In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare commenced the payment of seven months’ arrears of the 25-35 per cent upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure to all categories of health workers, with N10bn paid in August 2025.

‘Following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for these arrears owed to health workers, including members of NARD, to be paid expeditiously, as of Thursday, October 30, another sum of N21.3bn has been moved to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System account, and payment has commenced.

‘In addition, the sum of N11.995bn is being processed for release within 72 hours to pay other arrears, including accoutrement allowance. All these payments are being enjoyed by members of NARD in accordance with the salary structure in the health sector. Additionally, the federal government has released N10.6bn as of September 2025 as full payment for the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, paid exclusively to resident doctors nationwide,’ the statement said.

Situation in states

At the Kubwa General Hospital in Abuja, skeletal services were observed, as several departments, including the Accident and Emergency Unit (AandE), operated below capacity, leaving many patients unattended.

When our correspondent visited the hospital around 11.30am, the usually busy unit was nearly deserted, with only a few staff members seen on duty.

‘Check if there is anybody who can attend to you,’ a worker at the AandE Unit told our reporter, who posed as a patient seeking urgent attention.

The male surgical ward was also empty, while the operating theatre appeared locked, with no visible activity taking place.

Patients and relatives waiting outside the wards expressed frustration over the slow pace of services.

‘I’ve been here since morning to see a doctor, but no one has attended to me. They just keep saying the doctors are not around. We don’t even know when they will come,’ said Habeeb Isa, who brought his son for treatment.

Makurdi

Our correspondent reports that many patients were discharged from the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) shortly before the strike took its toll on the facility as house officers deserted their duty posts.

A patient, Chichi Terkura, said she was discharged from the hospital on Friday shortly after news filtered in that the doctors would commence the strike later that day.

‘Many patients were also discharged that day so they could continue their medical attention elsewhere because of the strike. It’s really a pathetic situation because I prefer the competent hands we have at BSUTH and the cheaper services compared to private facilities,’ Terkura said.

For Meduga Anselm, whose child is currently admitted at the hospital, little or no attention has been given to patients since the strike began.

‘It’s a terrible situation,’ he lamented.

Meanwhile, there are other patients said to be helpless at the hospital, even as the management tries to bridge the gap.

Maiduguri

In Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, our correspondent, who visited the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) observed skeletal services at the emergency ward.

The hospital, which is usually overcrowded with patients, had only nurses and a few medical doctors attending to people in some of the wards and departments visited.

A nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity said the doctors had complied with the strike, but a few remained on duty to attend to emergency cases.

Ladi Mshelia, a patient, said the strike had affected her appointment with a doctor in the hospital.

‘Many of us were not aware of the strike. I covered a very long distance to come and see the doctor. Unfortunately, he didn’t come, and I cannot see any other doctor around,’ she said.

She said some of the patients with serious cases have moved to private hospitals to avoid delay.

‘It’s difficult to get a doctor in the UMTH on a normal day, let alone during the strike action.

‘My appeal is for the federal government to look into their demand and settle them so that activities will return properly in the hospital,’ she said.

Lagos

Several patients at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) have been forced to leave the facilities following the ongoing strike by doctors.

A visit by Daily Trust to LASUTH yesterday revealed that the waiting areas-usually crowded with relatives of patients-were largely empty, occupied only by nurses in purple uniforms and security officers in blue.

One hospital official confirmed that many patients had been discharged, adding that only a few were still receiving attention.

‘Only the nurses are working; the doctors are on strike,’ she said.

President of the LASUTH Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Dr. Morolayo Onamusi, in a text message, said: ‘We will put out a press release in due time. Thank you for reaching out and sharing our story.’

Similarly, the president of the LUTH ARD, Dr. Benjamin Uyi, confirmed compliance with the strike directive, stating, ‘The strike is still ongoing.’

Democracy in crisis in West Africa, says ECOWAS president

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has raised the alarm over what he described as a crisis of democracy and security in the West African sub-region.

Speaking in Abuja at the second edition of the African Political Square and the Experts meeting on Alternative Futures for ECOWAS at 50 – jointly organized with the African Leadership Centre (ALC), in collaboration with Codesria and Wathi, Touray, who was represented by the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdufatah Musah, described the moment as one demanding ‘deep introspection and honest self-assessment.’

He said: ‘ECOWAS today faces a crisis of democracy and security. Manipulation of constitutions and exclusionary politics have become fashionable. Democracy is in crisis, and insecurity has worsened.’

He noted that the bloc’s history had passed through three phases: formation amid Cold War divisions, the peacekeeping era of the 1990s, and the current struggle with insecurity and governance.

‘It was visionary leadership that created ECOWAS in 1975,’ he recalled. ‘At that time, bringing together francophone, anglophone, and lusophone states was itself a miracle. Now, after fifty years, we must ask whether we are still faithful to that vision.’

He warned that ‘external shocks and internal weaknesses’ had combined to create a turning point for West Africa.

‘The world is no longer bipolar; it is multipolar – even multicultural,’ he said. ‘Countries now have choices based on their interests and values. West Africa must also choose between people-centred democracy and authoritarian regression.’

Bayelsa dep gov faces impeachment as Diri joins APC today

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, faces impeachment by the House of Assembly as Governor Douye Diri formally declares for the All Progressives Congress (APC) today.

Ewhrudjakpo’s refusal to quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after Diri’s resignation from the party on October 15 has triggered tension within the state government. The House of Assembly, allegedly under Diri’s influence, has begun impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.

In response, Ewhrudjakpo approached the Federal High Court in Abuja last week, seeking to halt the process.

Speaking on Sunday during the state’s 14th annual thanksgiving service ahead of his defection, Diri said his decision to leave the PDP was driven by the best interests of Bayelsa.

‘Somebody had to take the decision, and I took it on behalf of the state. I took it in the best interest of the state. Some of you might not understand now, but later it will be clear to all,’ Diri said.

He added that his administration’s focus had been on completing inherited projects, initiating new ones, and maintaining peace and security. ‘Politics is for development, not to kill your brother,’ he said, adding that the large turnout at the service was proof of Bayelsa’s unity.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, described Diri’s defection as a strategic alignment with the centre, cautioning politicians to consider the implications of disloyalty – a veiled reference to Ewhrudjakpo’s decision to remain in the PDP.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by his Senior Policy Adviser, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, urged Bayelsans to remain united, saying the state’s development depended on its cohesion. He also praised Bayelsa’s tradition of thanksgiving, calling it an attitude that attracts divine blessings.

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku, lauded Diri’s ‘visible developmental strides,’ describing him as ‘a godsend to the state.’

Why Ewhrudjakpo stayed in PDP

Ewhrudjakpo’s loyalty to former Governor Seriake Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, is believed to be behind his refusal to defect. Both men hail from Sagbama Local Government Area, and Dickson is regarded as a political mentor to both Diri and Ewhrudjakpo.

Dickson confirmed to reporters at the National Assembly that Diri had approached him several times to join the APC, but he declined.

Observers believe Ewhrudjakpo’s allegiance to Dickson remains firm and may position him as a key PDP contender for the 2027 governorship election.

Yenagoa streets decked in APC colours

Daily Trust observed that major streets in Yenagoa have been adorned with giant billboards welcoming Diri to the APC.

The Government House roundabout now displays APC flags, while PDP flags previously mounted there have been removed.

The last time PDP insignia were taken down from the Creek Haven roundabout was in February 2019, ahead of the planned swearing-in of APC’s Chief David Lyon, whose election was annulled by the Supreme Court a day before the event.
