Peter Obi breaks silence on Trump’s military invasion threat

Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted President Donald Trump’s tweets about invading Nigeria with the US military forces.

Peter Obi on his X handle on Monday urged the US government to find diplomatic ways to intervene.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property. According to Amnesty International, over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023 and as I have repeatedly lamented, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable, and all efforts must be made to bring it to a stop. It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance,” he wrote.

Peter Obi added that the issue of insecurity has been a long-time plague ailing the country. He emphasised the need for the two countries to be constructive and diplomatic in their collaboration.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the lack and absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC-led government/leaders to effectively govern, galvanise and lead Nigeria, where no one is unwarrantedly oppressed and killed, a nation where peace, truth and justice reign!. As democracies, Nigeria and the US have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns. Both countries must work in concert and expeditiously towards that purpose,” he added

Nigerian stakeholders says “no” to IBA, embraces World Boxing

Boxing stakeholders in Nigeria have decried the ploy by some persons to move the country from World Boxing to the International Boxing Association (IBA).

World Boxing is the sole international federation approved by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to govern the sport at the Olympic Games. This implies that national federation’s not affiliated with World Boxing won’t participate at the boxing event in the Olympics and other (IOC) sanctioned championship.

ccording to the stakeholders, some foreign agents who have been promised a financial grant of ($2.3 million) by the International Boxing Association (IBA) are trying to infiltrate the newly inaugurated board of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF) with the aim to deceptively affiliate the body with the Switzerland based Association.

They have called on the (NBF) leadership to remain vigilant of the activities of these interlopers.

It will be recalled that the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Engr. Habu Gumel, while congratulating the new (NBF) board, urged the body’s leadership to prioritize the career of the athletes and Nigeria’s participation at the Olympics by strengthening it affiliation with World Boxing.

Several Nigerian boxing great and veterans have equally urged the Nigerian Boxing Federation to remain with World Boxing for the sake of the athletes and the nation’s integrity.

They include Joe Mensah, Isaac Ikhoria, Alhaji Masha, and PA. Muili Ojo. Others are Ajani Aremu, Bolaji Ezekiel, Omoruyi Roland, and William Azano. Also on the list are Elder Joseph Osewa, Sabo Muhammed, Femi Baba Femi, and Joseph Sagotogun, amongst others.

The veterans also urged the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) to caution the foreigners trying to infiltrate Nigerian sports for their selfish gains.

Nigeria’s representative on the continent, Rivers United have been handed a difficult group in this season’s CAF Champions League.

The Port Harcourt-based team will play in Group A alongside Pyramids SC of Egypt, RS Berkane of Morocco, and Power Dynamos of Zambia.

Egyptian champions Pyramids SC are the defending champions, having lifted the CAF Champions League trophy for the first time last season.

RS Berkane, one of Morocco’s strongest clubs, are very experienced in continental competitions but have never won the Champions League.

Kano adopts electricity policy, to acquire majority share in KEDCO

By Maduabuchi Nmeribeh/Kano Kano State Government has approved plans to acquire majority shares in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to improve energy supply, promote industrial growth, and expand access to reliable electricity across the state. This was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. Bature said, “the decision aims to give the state a stronger role in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution to enhance efficiency, accountability, and service delivery in the energy sector. “It is also expected to boost economic activities, create jobs, and attract both local and foreign investments.”

ccording to Bature, the decision was taken during the last Saturday’s Executive Council meeting. In addition, the Council approved the presentation and adoption of the Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. The policy provides a clear roadmap for sustainable energy development, focusing on renewable power integration and improved energy efficiency across sectors. “Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration remains committed to transforming Kano into an energy-secure and business-friendly state that fosters innovation, industrialization, and inclusive economic growth,” the statement concluded.

Former NUJ president advises Kano govt to stop harassment of journalists

By Maduabuchi Nmeribeh/Kano

A former President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Malam Muhammad Garba, has advised Kano state government to embrace constructive media engagement, insisting that working journalists in the state must be allowed to practice in conducive atmosphere devoid of harassment.

rba, who was two-time Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs in Kano state, urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to reflect on the recent report by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ).

rba, who was also former Chief of Staff to the immediate-past National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, regretted over what he described as sustained criticism of the Kano State Government by local and international media rights organizations, in recent times.

In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to our Correspondent, Garba said that genuine collaboration between the government and the media would enhance the flow of accurate information, deepen citizens’ understanding of government policies, and promote transparency in governance.

ccording to the statement, “a government confident enough to engage the press constructively demonstrates both strength and accountability.

“Freedom of the press is measured not by plaques or ceremonies, but by the ability of journalists to report without fear of reprisal.”

rba who is currently Special Adviser to the Minister of Information further stated that open communication and mutual respect between the state and journalists will build trust, strengthen public confidence, and enhance the credibility of government communications.

He described as contradictory, “the government’s claim of promoting free speech while simultaneously using state institutions to intimidate journalists and silence dissenting voices.

“The media is not an enemy of government; it is a partner in nation-building. Respecting press freedom is not only a constitutional obligation, but also a mark of mature and responsive leadership.”

rba noted with concern that, “despite the government’s dismissal of the WSCIJ report as misleading and malicious, the growing record of arrests, intimidation, and restrictive media policies paints a worrying picture of repression.”

He cited several incidents, including: “The directive by the state government to the police to investigate Daily Nigerian publisher, Jafar Jaafar, after a report alleging corruption involving a senior government official.

“The arrest and detention of Ibrahim Ishaq Dan’uwa Rano, founder of Dan’uwa Rano TV, over a similar report.

“The detention of Kano Times reporters Buhari Rano and Ismail Auwal, and the arrest of Abdulaziz Aliyu of Waraka Online TV for publishing critical stories; and the August 2024 attack on a Channels Television crew bus by machete-wielding assailants during a protest in Kano.”

rba also condemned what he described as the state government’s restrictive media directives, “including bans on live political programmes and warnings against asking what it termed ‘provocative questions.”

He argued that such policies amount to censorship and undermining of democratic governance.

rba, who also serves as a steering committee member of the International Forum on Ethical Journalism, called on Governor Yusuf’s administration to, “reverse this trend and adopt a media-friendly approach that guarantees journalists’ safety and freedom.”

Beko equips 9 public schools with essential appliances for learning

Continuing to move towards their commitment to uplifting the Filipino community, lhome appliance company Beko has partnered with the Department of Education – Division of Taguig City and Pateros to provide essential home appliances to nine selected public schools.

This initiative, a significant part of Beko’s corporate social responsibility efforts, aims to enhance daily operations within schools by providing reliable equipment for practical home economics lessons, including cookery courses, and ultimately supporting students, teachers and the entire academic community.

The brand donated nine sets of appliances, each comprising a refrigerator, a washing machine and a cooking range, to selected elementary, junior high and senior high schools within the Taguig area, such as the Sta. Ana Elementary School, Ciriaco P. Tinga Elementary School, Enlisted Men’s Signal Village Elementary School, Taguig Integrated School, Tibagan High School, Kapitan Jose Cardones Integrated School, Pitogo High School, Fort Bonifacio High School and Kapitan Eddie T. So, we hope that this donation will really help educate our young generation and empower them to become prepared in life and shape them professionally in the future.’

‘In fact, Fort Bonifacio High School is one of the few schools that offers the TLE-TVL program in the senior high school… so, your donation of the refrigerator, washing machine and gas range will really improve our facilities, particularly so that the division of the Taguig and Pateros is preparing in hosting the National Tec-Voc Day this school year,’ he added.

‘We are grateful that we have been selected for this initiative. Rest assured that our learners will really use these, especially those schools offering cookery courses. Beko’s generous contribution is a vital step towards enriching the quality of education for the students. By providing appliances that foster life skills, Beko is not only supporting academic growth but also helping students be ready for life beyond the classroom.

Cebu Pacific is Asia’s best low-cost carrier

Cebu Pacific has stamped its dominance as one of Asia-Pacific’s best low-cost airlines, winning the highest prize in one of the aviation industry’s most prestigious award-giving bodies.

At the 2025 Centre for Aviation (CAPA) Awards for Excellence, Cebu Pacific was recognized as Asia’s Low-Cost Airline of the Year, winning in a highly competitive region for budget carriers.

The award is given to the low-cost carrier that stood out in the region strategically by putting up benchmarks and innovations on how to fly passengers with limited budget.

Cebu Pacific CEO Michael Szucs said the award inspires the airline to do better in its aspiration to boost tourism in the Philippines and in Asia-Pacific. Cebu Pacific is the largest carrier by passenger and fleet size in the country right now.

The carrier owned by the Gokongweis manages an industry-leading fleet of 100 aircraft to date. It also operates the widest domestic reach among Philippine carriers, mounting flights to 37 local destinations and 26 foreign cities.

‘As we expand our reach, our purpose remains clear – to connect people and communities, and to help fuel tourism and economic growth across the Philippines and Asia-Pacific,’ Szucs said.

For 2025, Cebu Pacific is cruising well into another record number of passengers, having flown nearly 20 million already between January and September.

Cebu Pacific carried a record 24.5 million passengers in 2024, and it expects to grow by at least 20 percent this year to flirt with the 30-million level.

With the holiday season coming in, Cebu Pacific is ramping up its fleet to keep up with the peak demand. First, the airline is leasing two Airbus A320s from Bulgaria Air between December and January, assigning them to high-traffic routes Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Cagayan de Oro.

Cebu Pacific is also receiving fresh units of A330s from Airbus this November and in December. It would have 14 A330s by then, cementing its position as the largest operator of the aircraft.

PSE chief wants a taste of Vietnam’s retail potion

Low retail participation has been ailing the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) for quite some time now, impacting the market’s liquidity.

A magic potion of sorts might be needed to rejuvenate and spur active participation, and PSE president and chief executive officer Ramon Monzon is keen on finding one.

If Monzon can have it his way, though, he would like to uncover and study the elixir behind strong retail participation in one of the country’s Southeast Asian neighbors.

‘What dictates liquidity basically is retail investing,’ Monzon told The STAR. ‘Vietnam, I read, is hitting $900 million a day of volume, and 80 percent of that volume is generated by retail investors. I keep telling my research team how can that happen?’

‘How can 80 percent of the $900 million be generated by retail investors? Where do they get the money when their per capita is $4,800? How can they trade such that 80 percent of the $900 million to $1 billion come from retail investors? I’m still trying to figure that out. But they must have a secret elixir that I want to learn,’ he said.

Monzon’s wish is to see increased liquidity in the market, and doing so will require a bigger role for retail investors.

‘We’re now about 17 percent retail participation. I really want to get it up again to the 20 percent plus level at least, initially,’ he said.

‘What am I counting on? Well, we have a lot of education initiatives with overseas Filipino workers, with the Commission of FIlipinos Overseas. We have the GCash (GStocks PH) getting more subscribers,’ the PSE chief added.

The PSE has been continuously working on helping equipped retail investors with investment know-how through its various investing literacy initiatives and partnerships.

In 2024, a surge in online accounts boosted the number of stock market accounts in the PSE by 50.1 percent to 2.86 million from 1.91 million in the previous year.

Retail investors comprised the lion’s share or 98.9 percent of total account owners, while institutional investors made up the remaining 1.1 percent.

While growth in retail accounts has been remarkable, the PSE admitted that the real challenge is getting retail investors to participate more actively in the market as they only contributed 16 percent to total value turnover in 2024.

To boost liquidity, Monzon said that the PSE is set to come up with a few new products next year.

‘We’re still targeting the depository rights,’ he said.

The PSE and the Securities and Exchange Commission have been working on the rules and regulations for the planned launch of the Global Philippine Depositary Receipts (GPDR).

GPDR is a peso-denominated instrument that represent economic, but not voting, interest in foreign-listed securities, with an option to convert to the underlying shares.

The listing and trading of GPDR are intended to provide local investors investment opportunities outside the Philippine market and allow them to build a globally diversified portfolio.

Monzon, however, noted that ‘for our company to get interest in Thailand or in Singapore, it needs to take off here first.’

‘So we’ve got to resolve this confidence, this sentiment issue. That’s why the corruption issue really needs to be addressed. Otherwise, it will weigh on the market,’ he said.

The PSE also intends to launch derivatives and is actively engaging with other exchanges and foreign market participants to support the development of a derivatives market in the country.

Monzon said they will be meeting with officials of Taipei Exchange this month.

‘We’re engaging them. We’re having learning sessions with them on derivatives. We’re also having learning sessions with Taipei Stock Exchange for the fixed income. I also want to have new products on Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp. (PDEx),’ he said.

The PSE has acquired a majority stake in the Philippine Dealing System Holdings Corp., the holding company that owns the PDEx, which is the operator of the fixed income exchange.

‘So hopefully by next year we can harness or reap some benefits from the acquisition and get some synergies going,’ Monzon said.
