Kaduna State Government, in collaboration with the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Nigeria, has empowered 400 farmers in the state.

The state governor, Senator Uba Sani, described agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy and a key driver of inclusive growth.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Malam Sani Liman Kila, at the flag-off of the distribution of agricultural inputs on Monday, said the partnership demonstrates his administration’s commitment to people-centred development and aligns with Kaduna’s broader vision of building a food-secure, resilient, and inclusive economy.

He said: ‘Smallholder farmers form the backbone of our agricultural system. Supporting them means strengthening our economy, securing our food supply, and uplifting thousands of households.’

Sani noted that under his leadership, agriculture remains a top priority, with over N10 billion earmarked for the sector in the 2025 budget.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the inputs judiciously and avoid selling them, stressing that the programme was designed to lift farmers from poverty and improve their livelihoods.

Chief Executive Officer of AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, Hon. Jabir Abdullahi Tsauni, hailed the Kaduna State Government for providing counterpart funding that enabled the programme’s expansion to all 23 local government areas.

According to him, 345 smallholder farmers have been trained in good agronomic and climate-smart agricultural practices, including backyard farming for tomatoes, sweet pepper, maize, cowpea, and soybeans.

‘These inputs are not just farming materials,’ he said, ‘they are instruments of hope and productivity.’

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has opened student loan application portal for the 2025/2026 academic session, scheduled to run from October 23, 2025, to January 31, 2026.

In a statement signed by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications, NELFUND expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation of tertiary institutions nationwide and called for further collaboration to ensure a smooth and inclusive loan process for all eligible students.

The statement added that institutions were reminded to update and upload verified records of both returning and newly admitted students on the NELFUND Student Verification Portal, as this step is essential for students to successfully apply and benefit from the scheme.

To support a seamless rollout, NELFUND stated that the portal will open on Thursday, October 23, 2025, and close on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Eligible applicants include returning and newly admitted students of accredited tertiary institutions.

It added that fresh students may apply using either their Admission Number or JAMB Registration Number in place of a Matric Number. Institutions are encouraged to show understanding in enforcing registration and fee payment deadlines for students awaiting loan disbursement.

Students that have not commenced their academic session were encouraged to formally write to NELFUND with their approved calendar to allow for scheduling flexibility.

The Fund also appealed to institutions to consider temporary registration measures for students whose loan applications are being processed, to ensure no student loses access to education due to financial constraints.

Two of the United States’ top envoys to the Middle East met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday after weekend violence threatened to wreck a fragile US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza.

The sit-down came as Israel reopened the Kerem Shalom border crossing into Gaza for aid shipments, a security official and a humanitarian source said, after the entry point was closed briefly on Sunday following the killing of two Israeli soldiers.

In response, Israel carried out dozens of strikes targeting Hamas across Gaza – using 153 tonnes of bombs, according to Netanyahu – and accused the militant group of ‘a blatant violation’ of the truce, an accusation it denied.

Both sides insisted that they remained committed to the ceasefire and US President Donald Trump, who helped broker the deal, told reporters in Washington that as far as he was concerned, it was still in effect.

Colin Powell, the late former American Secretary of State stood before the United Nations General Assembly waving photographs and maps showing purported sites of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in Iraq. In the deep recess of his heart, he knew that those photos were fakes and that there were no WMDs anywhere in Iraq as was later proven after the war. But he did what he did anyway because there was an abiding goal of ”Regime change” being pursued by the Americans in Iraq and so whatever that was needed to bring that by fair or foul means was to be done.

Colin Powell’s actions were in line with America’s pattern of staging actions to conveniently provide Cassus belli for achieving grand American objectives in a particular area of interest. For every global major war or intervention by America there is always a smokescreen of psychological actions based mostly on manufactured lies and propaganda all intended to achieve aims that project America’s interests not necessarily the interests of those on whose behalf they claim to be pursuing. It does not matter whether in the process millions die or whether the country or countries where the intervention occurs are left in rubble and utter ruin as long as the American ogre gets its regular dose of blood.

So, when Americans suddenly start taking undue interest often waxing sanctimonious and sounding like they care about what is happening in a particular country’s internal affairs then it is time to sound the alarm and go into vigilance mode.

Ted Cruz, a junior Senator from the American State of Texas, which has an infamous history of rabid racial discrimination against its minority populations of blacks and Latinos and was the site of many wars of aggression against neighbouring Mexico in history and genocide against the native Indians, has been running around like Colin Powell on Iraq, trying to convince the American public that there is ongoing genocide against the Christian population in Nigeria. Senator Cruz is so wired up on this that he is sponsoring a Bill on the floor of the American Senate S. 2747 known as Nigerian Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, seeking to compel the United States Government to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act citing Nigeria as ‘the world’s deadliest persecution of Christians.’

First of all, I doubt if Senator Cruz can point to Nigeria on the world map unaided. Do not attempt to ask him if he knows the history of Nigeria even superficially. If he has at least a kindergarten knowledge of Nigeria, its history through the years and the people that make up this country he won’t be in such a hurry to ridicule himself on the true nature of what is happening in a country he knows zilch about.

Secondly, I doubt if Senator Cruz knows what the word ‘genocide” is all about. And if he does know then perhaps like Colin Powell, he is lying to himself and being what the English will say ‘Clever by half.’

If Senator Cruz really knows Nigeria well, then he will not fail to note that with the exception of the Chief of Air Staff, the National Security Adviser and the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, all other heads of Nigeria’s security establishment are of the Christian faith. Is Senator Cruz implying that these highly professional gentlemen are complicit in the purported genocide against Christians in Nigeria? Or is it that these gentlemen would sit idly by and watch Christians being killed in Nigeria without their intervention? If the Senator is implying that because the Nigerian state is headed by a Muslim, the purported genocide is encouraged by him, will the mentioned officers comply with orders to kill fellow Nigerians which they have all sworn to protect?

I think Senator Cruz’s Bill such as it does not even establish with conviction that what is going on in Nigeria qualifies to be called genocide. To be able to make a convincing case for genocide in Nigeria and for actions to be taken, Senator Cruz must prove that the Nigerian government through its policies is complicit in the killings of Christians as happened in Rwanda, Sudan etc.

And again, Senator Cruz should also not leave out the submissions of Congressman Scott Perry from Pennsylvania, who chaired the House Committee on funding to the USAID. In the said submission, Congressman Perry stated that the committee found that Boko Haram the terrorist group that has been wreaking killings on both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria was receiving funding from USAID. So, it follows that if Nigeria is to be sanctioned on allegations of genocide, then the US government through one of its agencies is also complicit in enabling terrorist activities leading to genocide in Nigeria.

Let us be clear on the import of Senator Cruz’s Bill. Genocide is not necessarily what the US says it is. The same US that turned a blind eye to a gilt-edged case of genocide in Gaza by the Israelis cannot turn round to say that the case of killings by terrorist groups in Nigeria which affects both Christians and Muslims amounts to genocide. I have taken the pains to check Senator Cruz’s voting records in the Senate on matters relating to Israeli aggressions and mass killings in Gaza and there is not time that he has voted against Israel. So, if Senator Cruz cannot show compassion on the defenceless children and women of Gaza who are being killed on a daily basis by the brutal war machine of Israel what justification does he have to turn full circle on similar acts in Nigeria?

On the whole this serves as a lesson on Nigerian leaders that while they have been dithering on their constitutional responsibility to protect and secure Nigerians from criminal elements the world is not only watching but is ready to act.

From the tenor of Senator Cruz’s Bill, it is clear that, like Colin Powell on Iraq, the Texas Senator who comes from a state where big US Defence contractors are located this is likely a push to set the stage for military intervention in Nigeria by the US government using the alleged genocide on Christians as a Cassus belli. Already there are reports that Blackwater, the US military contractor that gained notoriety in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria has been contracted to ‘protect’ Christians in Nigeria from genocide. If by acts of omission and commission Nigerian leaders pave way for American intervention in Nigeria, we can be sure that they will be the first victims.

For sure as we have seen from the pattern of American interventions in such cases, Americans will not be here to protect Christians but their interests in this country against the global geo-political rivals.

Nuhu Ribadu’s career is a testament to the power of transformative leadership. As National Security Adviser, Ribadu has once again wielded his magic wand, orchestrating a symphony of security efforts that have yielded remarkable results. From curbing oil theft and banditry to combating Boko Haram and kidnapping, he has infused Nigeria’s security architecture with renewed purpose and coordination. His strategic leadership has stabilised communities, restored a sense of safety, and revitalised economic activity across regions once crippled by insecurity.

Through his emphasis on synergy among security stakeholders-police, DSS, military, vigilante groups, and others-intelligence sharing and operational collaboration have significantly improved. This has led to the release of thousands of hostages, the neutralisation of notorious bandits and terrorist commanders, and the disruption of criminal networks.

Recent military breakthroughs underscore this progress: the neutralisation of Babangida Kachala in Kogi State, the elimination of Kachalla Balla and his gang, and the death of Kachalla Halilu Sububu, a notorious bandit leader and arms supplier in the northwest. Other infamous figures-including Buharin Yadi, Boderi Isyaku, Dogo Gudali, Alhaji Auta, Rufai Maikaji, and ‘Yellow’-have also been neutralised in successive operations.

On the international stage, Ribadu elevated Nigeria’s profile in global counterterrorism collaboration. Through strengthened partnerships and enhanced intelligence sharing with key allies, Nigeria achieved major breakthroughs in the fight against Al-Qaeda-linked groups, including ISWAP.

These operations, supported by advanced satellite surveillance and regional intelligence platforms, disrupted terrorist financing networks and cross-border recruitment chains. One notable success was the arrest of Muhammad Yusuf’s son, a key ISWAP commander and a symbolic figure in the continuation of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The ripple effects of Ribadu’s leadership are evident: safer highways and railways, a more peaceful Southeast. Through his renewed synergy, coordinated operations led to the defeat of IPOB’s violent campaigns in the Southeast and the arrest of Simon Ekpa, whose detention abroad symbolided a turning point in the effort to restore peace to the southeastern region and near elimination of large-scale oil theft in the Niger Delta.

In revitalising the economic development, Ribadu broadened the concept of national security to include financial integrity and economic resilience. The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, has said the advancement of women is central to peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.

The Minister stated this at the Global Leaders’ Meeting in Beijing, China, on Women in Beijing, with the theme: One Shared Future: New and Accelerated Process for Women’s All-Round Development.

She said the year 2025 holds profound significance, marking 80 years of the United Nations, 25 years of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security and 30 years of the Global Social Development Agenda.

Furthermore, the Minister said Nigeria’s establishment of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development as the national institutional mechanism for gender equality and social inclusion remains a cornerstone for coordinating national action, mainstreaming gender, and protecting women, children, and vulnerable groups.

Suleiman-Ibrahim said that despite this much progress, challenges persist, but guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria is advancing transformative reforms that position women, children, the family and all vulnerable groups at the centre of national renewal.

She highlighted major consolidated frameworks that include the National Gender Policy, 2021 to 2026; the National Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy, (2023); the National Policy on Ending Child Marriage, and the Third National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (2025-2030), and many other legal instruments and frameworks all designed to expand opportunity, protect rights, strengthen resilience and increase investment.

To translate these frameworks into measurable outcomes, she added, Nigeria is implementing the Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions- 774 (RH-SII-774); a coordinated national delivery platform operating across all its 774 local government areas.

‘The programme integrates nine mutually reinforcing pillars that together drive women-centred, children-protected, and family-focused transformation.

‘These programmes are already reshaping local economies, driving inclusion, and demonstrating the power of gender-responsive delivery on a scale, e. g. Nigeria’s effort in addressing women’s representation in politics, elected positions through the Special Reserved Seats Bill soon to be passed and adopted by the Nigerian Parliament and endorsed by the Nigerian Government’, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim stated.

Hussaini Garba Mohammed, a staff member of the Media Trust Group, has been invited to speak at the 13th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) 2025

The global event is scheduled to be held from December 1 to 5, 2025, in Pretoria, South Africa.

According to an official letter from the conference organizers, Mohammed will speak in Session 7 under the theme ‘Reporting Under Fire: Science Journalism in Conflict Zones and Authoritarian Regimes.’

The session, anchored on the abstract ‘How science journalists navigate censorship, conflict, and crisis to bring evidence-based reporting to marginalized communities,’ will feature perspectives from journalists in Yemen, Lebanon, and Nigeria.

It will also highlight how they confront censorship, security threats, and digital suppression while reporting on public health, climate, and technology issues among others.

Mohammed brings extensive experience in science and media communication into the forum, where he will share practical insights on balancing safety, ethics, and accuracy in volatile regions.

A veteran participant in related fellowships globally, Mohammed began his journalism career in 1995 as a freelancer with the Triumph Publishing Company in Kano, North West Nigeria.

He later joined the Media Trust Group, where he has worked for over a decade alongside other leading professionals.

He is also an alumnus of the RNTC Public Interest Journalism programme with RNW Media in the Netherlands and serves as an Ambassador of the World Literacy Foundation, a role he assumed in 2020.

Described as a multi-award-winning media professional and youth advocate, Mohammed has spoken at several international forums and earned recognition from organisations across more than ten countries for his work in journalism, peace-building, and public service.

His selection for the WCSJ 2025 further cements his role as one of Nigeria’s leading voices in the promotion of science communication and public-interest journalism.

While reacting to his third time selection last year, Mohammed had said: ‘This is not the first time I have won this travel grant, it is now my third time, and I believe that the reason I was shortlisted is because I stand to be the HLF Nigerian Ambassador, who advocates for mathematics and computer science as a course.

‘I wrote different articles about mathematics, computer and natural science which encourage many Nigerians and African students to have interest in pursuing mathematics or computer science, because the majority of our students in Africa see the study of mathematics or computer science as only leading to teaching in a class.’

On his advice to upcoming science journalists, he had added: ‘They should read science articles, journals and participate in different science related forums.’

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) yesterday stated that extending clemency and pardon to persons convicted of corruption, financial fraud, illegal mining, murder, and drug-related crimes has far-reaching economic and social consequences.

Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Centre, Dr. Muda Yusuf stated that illegal mining undermines legitimate enterprise, depletes national revenue, and fuels insecurity in mining communities.

He also stated that corruption and financial crimes distort markets, weaken institutions, and discourage fair competition, adding that drug trafficking and related offences ‘tarnish Nigeria’s global image, exacerbate insecurity, and impose grave social costs.’

Yusuf spoke against the backdrop of the recent outcry that has trailed the recent presidential pardon of some convicted Nigerians. People have expressed concerns over the inclusion of people convicted of financial and economic crimes, especially illegal miners, on the list.

In a policy brief, Yusuf, a foremost economist said, ‘At a time when Nigeria is striving to diversify its economy, attract investment, and restore global confidence, such acts of liberal clemency risk sending disturbing and counterproductive signals.’

The CPPE however commended the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, for clarifying that the recently published list of beneficiaries of the presidential prerogative of mercy was not final.

He said, ‘The public outcry that greeted the initial announcement of the clemency and pardons was deep and legitimate.

‘The inclusion of persons convicted of corruption, financial crimes, murder, drug trafficking, and illegal mining raised profound concerns about governance credibility, institutional integrity, and investor confidence.

‘While the prerogative of mercy is a legitimate constitutional instrument, its application to serious economic and financial offences and other criminal acts demands utmost discretion, transparency, and alignment with Nigeria’s commitments to anti-corruption, drug control and the sanctity of human life.’

According to him, leniency toward financial and economic crimes erodes deterrence, weakens enforcement, and signals tolerance for misconduct.

‘A soft sanction regime undermines respect for law and governance credibility,’ he said.

He noted that investor confidence thrives on predictability, fairness, and justice.

‘When those convicted of economic or financial crimes are pardoned, it raises questions about policy consistency, contract sanctity, and investment security, thereby discouraging both domestic and foreign investors.

‘Undue clemency could reverse gains in governance credibility and reinforce perceptions of institutional weakness. Such perceptions affect sovereign risk ratings, capital inflows, and the attractiveness of Nigeria’s investment climate,’ Yusuf added.

‘Granting mercy to economic offenders can demoralize law enforcement agencies. Years of diligent investigation and prosecution risk being undermined, weakening institutional resolve and emboldening impunity. The CPPE particularly acknowledges, in this regard, the incredible achievements of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which have earned global recognition.

‘A lenient sanction environment fosters impunity, weakens ethical standards, and erodes public trust in justice institutions. Over time, it discourages productivity, nurtures rent-seeking, and sustains unproductive and illicit economic behaviour.

‘Sustained economic growth and inclusive prosperity depend on credibility, accountability, and fairness in governance.’

The centre called on the government to urgently review and rationalize the list of beneficiaries of the prerogative of mercy and reaffirm Nigeria’s zero-tolerance position on corruption, drug trafficking, illegal mining, and financial crimes.

‘Nigeria’s aspiration to build a competitive, diversified, and globally respected economy rests on the credibility of its institutions and integrity of its governance. The perception of weak sanction regimes toward economic and financial crimes is incompatible with this goal.

‘To preserve investor confidence and social stability, government must demonstrate unwavering commitment to accountability, effective consequence management and the rule of law. The credibility of Nigeria’s economic reform and investment promotion drive depends largely on it,’ the statement added.
