Bandits have reportedly shot and injured two persons, identified as Samuel Monday and Kefas Bala, while abducting a herder at Arikon community in Kachia LGA of Kaduna State.

A resident of Kachia town, Saleh Yakubu, said the incident happened on Thursday, around 5:34 am, and that 230 cows belonging to one Alhaji Salisu Duroje were rustled by the bandits.

He said the bandits, wielding sophisticated weapons, invaded the community while villagers were still sleeping.

He added that the bandits shot sporadically, and two people were hit by their bullets.

‘It was as a result of the sporadic shooting by the bandits that two of the villagers were hit by stray bullets. And they have been taken to the hospital in Kachia town for treatment,’ he said.

According to him, the bandits abducted a herder during the attack at a camp near the community.

A community leader from the area, who preferred anonymity, also confirmed the incident, saying he received a distress call about the attack on Friday morning, which prompted him to immediately alert security operatives stationed at Kachia.

‘It was even on Friday morning I received information about the incident that some bandits attacked Arikon village and shot two people while abducting a herder and made away with over 200 cows,’ he said.

Police sources at Kachia division confirmed the attack, saying efforts are on to rescue the abducted herder.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is intensifying efforts to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, aiming to boost the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth by 40% by 2030.

This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on economic diversification, industrial expansion, and regional integration.

To achieve this goal, Nigeria is building technical capacity for trade agencies and private-sector operators, ensuring effective implementation of the agreement.

The country is also developing a new cadre of experts who understand the practical application of AfCFTA Rules of Origin.

The National Coordinator of the Nigeria AfCFTA Coordination Office, Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, who dropped this hint, explained that the government has stepped up implementation through an advanced training initiative on the Rules of Origin – a vital component that determines goods’ eligibility for preferential treatment under AfCFTA.

Awolowo stated that the initiative is part of a strategic partnership with the World Customs Organisation (WCO) under the EU-WCO Rules of Origin for Africa Programme and is being facilitated by the Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi.

According to him, the training reflects the Tinubu administration’s determination to make AfCFTA work for Nigerian manufacturers, exporters, and service providers.

He explained that the renewed effort aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises economic diversification, industrial expansion, and regional integration.

Awolowo maintained that effective implementation of AfCFTA could increase Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by as much as 40 per cent by 2030 if the right structures and human capacity are developed.

Also speaking, a representative of the WCO, Ms. Faith Mathenge, highlighted the importance of human capital development in unlocking AfCFTA’s full potential.

She said the WCO and European Union are providing technical assistance and continuous training to bridge knowledge gaps in Rules of Origin and customs procedures.

Mathenge noted that the EU-WCO Programme aims to enhance the capacity of customs administrations and private operators to implement AfCFTA efficiently. She said Nigeria’s active participation demonstrates its commitment to regional trade integration and competitiveness.

The Royal School of Educational Therapy Foundation (RSETF) is set to host a health fair and a film premiere to champion inclusion and human development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Dr. Badewa T. Adejugbe-Williams, RSETF Founder and Executive Director, who will chair events on Friday, November 14, said the initiatives are dedicated to promoting inclusion, wellness, and social empowerment among vulnerable families and persons with disabilities.

Last month, Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, began another round of campaign to arm the agency’s personnel, saying this is the only way to effectively enforce traffic regulations on Nigerian highways, provide self-defence amid rising highway insecurity and enhance enforcement against non-compliant drivers especially those of overloaded heavy-duty vehicles.

The advocacy followed the 2024 bill to amend the FRSC Act to create a ‘Special Armed Squad.’ This is not the first time such bill has come to the National Assembly. The ‘Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act 2007 to Provide for the Establishment of Road Safety Special Armed Squad and for Other Related Matters’ came with the same arguments.

The agency became a paramilitary organisation via Road Tra?c Act CAP 141 of 1990, Amended in FRSC Act 2007 without authorisation to bear firearms. But the new quest got renewed traction in 2024 with the amendment bill introduced by Representatives Abiodun Derin Adesida and Olaide Lateef Mohammed. It passed second reading in October 2024.

Daily Trust believes that the quest to arm the FRSC is ill-advised as it will continue the militarisation of civilian spaces by every paramilitary agency in Nigeria. It would also increase the risky escalation of abuses, accidental shootings, extortion and brutality on the highways.

Moreover, experience has shown that the armed personnel would become an elite specialised squad that would essentially serve as body guards, protection units and other benefits for senior officials of the agency and other federal and state officials.

This newspaper is worried that it seems FRSC has not weaned itself off its merger with Nigeria Police Force (NPF). It has been merged with the Highway patrol of the Police. The most celebrated was in 1999 when late Maj. Gen. Haladu Hananiya was removed as the Corps Marshal. But the agency was formally handed over to the Police on February 18, 2000. The battle to revert FRSC to its original values led to a reversal of the merger in November 2003 when Gen Hananiya came back to head FRSC.

Therefore, we implore FRSC be content to being the lead agency in road tra?c administration enforcing its core mandate of preventing road accidents, educating drivers and enforcing traffic laws. It should stick to its primary responsibilities which it has historically performed through non-lethal measures especially safe use of the highways, detection and arresting of tra?c o?enders, impounding of vehicles, penalizing o?enders, rescuing accident victims and conducting research into ways to improve safety on the road.

It should drop the idea of being another police in a different garb, after all, before its establishment, road safety functions were handled within the Nigeria Police Force. In other words, there should be no any duplication or overlapping of duties.

This newspaper advices FRSC to stop the campaign of armament as it does not need ‘power of coercion’ to enforce traffic laws. It should worry about the quality of its enforcement as in Q1 2025 alone, there were 2,650 accidents and 1,593 deaths – an 8.3 per cent rise from 2024. Generally, data on road traffic crashes reveals that between January and December 2023, 5,081 Nigerians lost their lives, and 31,874 were injured. Between January and July 2024, 2,776 persons were killed, and 16,309 injured due to road traffic crashes.

The agency should also explore the deployment of technology and automation for effective traffic management including vehicle tracking, installation of speed cameras, and license plate recognition gadgets. This would help minimise physical interaction with motorists and reduce vices of bribery and extortion associated with checkpoints. It should also invest in body-worn cameras, CCTVs, and better training that align with global best practices.

FRSC should work on enhancing its standing with the public by endearing themselves with Nigerians by eliminating the difficulties and enhancing efficient service delivery in the processing of drivers licences. It should rebrand as an e?cient and corruption free organisation thus, favourably setting it apart from other law enforcement and paramilitary agencies in the country.

The agency should also embrace enhanced collaboration with sister agencies especially the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Nigeria is already swamped by weapon-carrying security forces and arming FRSC could further worsen the situation.

Nigerians are daily contending with issues of accidental discharge and misuse of weapons by those authorised to carry them.

We implore FRSC to embrace again its traditional role as educators and enforcers of road traffic rules and regulations without any intimidation of drivers and passengers or exhibition of fearful or aggressive tendencies. They should not be allowed to take a detour into another militarised agency.

A gendarme was shot dead Monday during a security patrol in Ivory Coast’s restive south as the country gears up for presidential elections Saturday, a gendarmerie statement said.

The area where the shooting took place has seen several opposition protests and blockades in the run-up to the election, in which incumbent Alassane Ouattara is seeking a fourth term.

The officer from the Agboville unit ‘lost his life during a mission’, the statement said, without indicating who was responsible.

‘As he was advancing with the gendarmes under his command along the Agboville-Azaguie route, the patrol came under gunfire 500 metres (1,640 feet) from the town of Grand Yapo,’ said the gendarmerie.

It added that the dead officer succumbed to wounds to the shoulder and abdomen.

Tensions have been high ahead of the weekend vote, with the opposition calling for demonstrations against the exclusion of its two main candidates, ex-president Laurent Gbagbo and international banker Tidjane Thiam.

The authorities have banned those protests, citing a risk of public disorder.

There have been sporadic rallies in recent days in some areas, notably the south and west, both regions where the opposition has historically been strong.

More than 700 people have been arrested, some for ‘acts of terrorism’, according to state prosecutor Oumar Braman Kone.

Some 30 people have been handed jail terms for public order disturbances while one person was shot dead during a demonstration by unidentified individuals, according to police.

Meanwhile, the Head of the ECOWAS Mission to observe the presidential election of October 25, 2025, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, arrived in Abidjan on the afternoon of Monday, October 20, 2025.

Osinbajo is coordinating the joint mission comprising 207 observers from ECOWAS and 66 others from the African Union. He will be assisted by Baboucarr Blaise Ismaïla JAGNE, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Gambia.

Four opposition candidates will go up against Ouattara.

They are former trade minister Jean-Louis Billon, representing a new grouping of parties, ex-president Gbagbo’s former wife Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, former minister Ahoua Don Mello and Henriette Lagou, who stood as a candidate in 2015.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested multiple suspects for alleged armed robbery, drug trafficking, and vehicle theft in Abuja.

CP Miller G. Dantawaye, who disclosed this to newsmen over the weekend, said the arrests followed a series of coordinated intelligence operations conducted by the command’s Scorpion Squads across the Kubwa, Life Camp, and Mabushi Divisions between October 9 and 18, 2025.

He said operatives, acting on credible intelligence, arrested multiple criminal suspects linked to armed robbery, drug trafficking, and vehicle theft across various locations in the territory.

He gave the names of the primary suspects as Manaseh Emmanuel, Dogora Ibrahim, and Ibrahim Idamusa, whom he said are members of a notorious armed robbery gang led by Ibrahim Yakubu, a.k.a. ‘Ycome.’

He confirmed that the three suspects were currently remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

CP Dantawaye also disclosed that another four suspected robbery syndicate members-Umar Abubakar, Iliyasu Ibrahim, Usman Ibrahim, and Alkasim Abubakar-were arrested by the Life Camp Division for theft.

According to him, investigations revealed these suspects are members of a ten-man armed robbery syndicate responsible for a series of violent robberies within the Kubwa, Life Camp, and Mpape suburbs of Abuja.

He added: ‘Furthermore, Bello Mohammed Tambuwal was apprehended by the Mabushi Police Division for the theft of a new 2019 Toyota Corolla, while Paul Onogwu was intercepted with 15 bags of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa.’

The police commissioner said exhibits recovered from the suspects included a cutlass, a sword, a jackknife, a Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep, a Toyota Corolla with registration number KRD 391JF, as well as 15 bags of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

CP Dantawaye commended the officers and men involved in the successful operations, charging all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to intensify and sustain the onslaught against criminals across the FCT.

He further emphasized that the Command will continue to ‘hit hard on criminal elements until their hideouts are uncovered,’ while vowing his administration’s determination to rid the territory of crimes and criminality.
