Digital traffic attacks on Kenyan websites surge 114pc in a year

Incidents of hackers flooding websites, servers and networks in Kenya with huge volumes of malicious traffic to make them inaccessible rose 114.3 percent in the year to June as cybercriminals target digital systems.

These cyber assaults, known technically as distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, rose to 72.16 million in the year ended June 2026, up from 33.68 million a year earlier, according to the latest data from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).

This was the highest growth among the cyber threats tracked by the regulator, highlighting the growing exposure of businesses and public systems as more services move online.

DDoS attacks occur when attackers flood a website, server, or network with high malicious traffic to overwhelm its capacity and make it slow or inaccessible to legitimate users.

Attackers often use networks of malware-infected computers and other connected devices, known as botnets, to send large numbers of requests to a target at the same time.

The traffic can consume a system’s bandwidth, processing capacity, or memory, disrupting access even when the attackers have not gained access to the underlying data.

This results in service downtime, stopping customers from buying items, logging into accounts, or using online services.

Companies and government agencies end up losing money from missed sales or services, and expensive emergency fixes.

Experts have also warned that hackers sometimes use a DDoS attack as a distraction to hide data theft or malware installation on the network.

Kenya has previously experienced high-profile DDoS attacks targeting government digital services. In July 2023, the eCitizen platform, the government’s online services portal, was hit by a major attack that temporarily disrupted access to key agencies.

Kenya Power, Kenya Railways and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) were among the systems reported to have been affected at the time.

The government said no data had been accessed or lost. The hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan claimed responsibility.

The increase in DDoS threats comes as Kenya’s digital economy expands, increasing the number of systems and services that rely on internet connectivity.

The CA data also shows web application attacks targeting flaws, poor coding, or security gaps in websites, web services, and application programme interfaces (APIs) increased 99 percent to 51.51 million, from 25.89 million in the previous year.

Malware attacks, where cybercriminals use malicious software to infiltrate a computer system or network to steal data, damage operations, or gain unauthorised access, rose 64.8 percent to 230.31 million, from 139.76 million.

Overall, the regulator detected 11.1 billion cyber-threat incidents in the year to June 2026, a 29 percent increase from 8.6 billion a year earlier.

‘The total number of cyber threats detected during the April-June quarter declined by 30.0 per cent to 2.4 billion, compared with the previous quarter,’ the regulator said.

‘However, the total number of cyber threats increased by 29.0 per cent during the 2025/2026 financial year, from 8.6 billion recorded in the preceding financial year.’

System vulnerabilities – weaknesses or flaws in a computer system’s design, code, hardware – remain Kenya’s largest category, accounting for 10.6 billion incidents, or 95.4 percent of all threats recorded in the year to June 2026.

The regulator has previously linked the rise of cyber threats to inadequate system patching, limited user awareness of phishing and social engineering, and the increasing use of AI-driven and machine-learning tools by malicious actors.

The emergence of AI agents (systems capable of autonomously carrying out tasks on behalf of users) has also created another cybersecurity risk.

Spanish chef loses appeal against life sentence

The Appeal Court has upheld a life sentence for Spanish chef Daniel Sancho Bronchalo for the premeditated murder of Colombian surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga on Koh Phangan.

The court on Friday also upheld his convictions for concealing the victim’s body and destroying his passport, rejecting Sancho’s appeals against the convictions, his arrest and the police investigation.

Sancho had claimed the death in August 2023 resulted from an accidental fall during a fight. The court found his initial statement to police, in which he admitted forcefully striking Arrieta’s head against a washbasin, more credible than his later account in court.

It ruled that Sancho’s decision to remain in the room for about an hour before dismembering the body showed he intended to kill Arrieta.

The court also found evidence of premeditation, citing Sancho’s preparation of a knife, saw, cleaver, rubbish bags, rubber gloves and cleaning equipment at Bohemian Villa, where he took Arrieta instead of the hotel the victim had booked.

It rejected a request for additional testimony, ruling that the existing evidence was sufficient, and dismissed Sancho’s challenge to the legality of his detention and the investigation.

The Samui Provincial Court sentenced Sancho to death for premeditated murder in August 2024 but reduced the sentence to life imprisonment because his evidence was considered partly useful.

He also received four months for concealing the body, reduced to two months after his guilty plea, and two years for destroying the passport. Those terms could not be added to the life sentence.

Arrieta’s parents, who joined the case as co-plaintiffs, had sought 30 million baht in compensation. The Appeal Court upheld the trial court’s award of 4.424 million baht.

The court also rejected the parents’ appeal for the death penalty.

Albon’s car hit the barriers during the race. After the red flag was shown, the Williams car was removed from the track, bringing the Thai driver’s race to an end.

The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is taking place at the Baku City Circuit from September 24 to 26.

The race marks the 10th anniversary of Formula 1 racing in Azerbaijan.

More car renters go off the beaten path

The local car rental sector continues to grow despite intense competition, driven by Thai tourists and independent foreign travellers visiting second-tier cities, says car rental firm Avis Rent A Car.

Idanont Thaiarry, director of operations at Thai International Rent A Car, the local operator of Avis, said competition in the car rental business is focused on tourism demand, which benefits from expanding low-cost carrier networks at regional airports.

The company sees opportunities in the provinces as public transport such as buses and trains cannot fully cover major attractions in those locations, he said.

The average length of a car rental for tourism is 3-4 days.

Tourists want to explore new places other than major cities, said Mr Idanont. Foreign visitors do not travel in large tour groups as much, instead opting for self-driving trips, including Chinese tourists, he noted, helping to distribute tourism income to more communities and lesser-known places.

The company has 21 branches in Thailand, mostly at airports, and more than 1,000 rental cars in its fleet.

Foreign tourists planning trips to Chiang Mai and Phuket usually book for more days compared with other domestic destinations, such as Hat Yai or Khon Kaen, said Mr Idanont.

One trend is Thai tourists renting cars to visit spiritual sites in the Northeast, while expatriates or tourists in Bangkok look for nearby provinces, such as Ayutthaya or Ratchaburi.

Given the higher level of competition, he said the company is adjusting its strategy by offering a greater variety of products, such as vans with drivers, or targeting niche markets including concertgoers.

Rental rates start from 600-700 baht per day for sedans, up to 2,000 baht per day for larger vehicles.

For self-drivers, the company does not yet offer electric vehicles (EVs) as many foreign tourists, particularly Europeans, may be unfamiliar with this type of vehicle and could find it inconvenient to find charging stations in some locations, said Mr Idanont.

However, Avis started offering EVs for rent with drivers, mostly in Bangkok, to mitigate the impact of volatile oil prices.

Despite concerns over fluctuating fuel prices, there is still continued demand for travel, particularly during the high season, he said.

The company expects to record a strong rental rate during the high season, similar to the previous year, driven by domestic and short-haul tourists, said Mr Idanont.

Avis is a partner in the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) “Luck Laek Loon” domestic tourism campaign. Local travellers can register on the “Amazing Friend of the TAT” platform to receive updates on tourism products.

As part of its digital transformation strategy, the TAT will collect and analyse data on travel behaviour for its customer data platform, to be used in planning future campaigns and marketing plans, noted the authority.

Thai sprint king Puripol: The fastest man in Asia

Puripol Boonson tore up the record books and Asia’s sprinting order on Friday night, blazing to 100-metre gold in 9.90 seconds to crown himself the continent’s fastest man in front of a roaring Nagoya crowd.

The 20-year-old broke his own Asian Games record to win gold in the blue riband event in 9.90 seconds at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium to become Thailand’s first men’s 100m champion since Suchart Jairsuraparp’s victory on home soil at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games.

Puripol’s semi-final run of 9.91sec earlier on Friday had eclipsed the 9.92sec by China’s Su Bingtian at the 2018 edition in Jakarta, Indonesia.

But Puripol, who won silver in the discipline in Hangzhou three years ago, shaved another 100th off that in the final to finish well clear of the Omani pair of Ali Al-Balushi (10.04) and Malham Al-Balushi (10.11).

Puripol became Southeast Asia’s first runner to break the 10-second barrier when he ran 9.94 at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December last year and entered the Japan meet in fine form after posting 9.99 seconds at a race in the Czech Republic last month.

In the women’s 100 race, Jirapat Khanonta (11.46) and Sukanda Petraksa (11.48) finished fifth and sixth respectively on Friday.

China’s Chen Yujie won in a Games-record 11.06sec to relegate the Hangzhou gold medallist, Singapore’s Shanti Pereira (11.21), to the silver. Bahrain’s Edidiong Odiong took bronze in 11.33.

Lifters keep delivering

Weightlifter Weeraphon Wichuma claimed another silver medal for the Thai contingent after finishing second in the men’s 75kg category on Saturday.

Weeraphon, who won the 73kg silver at the Paris Olympics, hauled 160kg in the opening snatch event and lifted 205kg in clean and jerk to finish with a combined 365kg.

The gold medal went to Indonesia’s Irwin Ramat Abdullah, who edged the Thai in the clean and jerk by just one kilo. North Korea’s Ri Chong Song took bronze with 357kg.

Weeraphon’s silver was the fourth medal of the lifting team following the success of Suratwadee Yodsan (women’s 57kg – silver), Theerapong Silachai (men’s 60kg – bronze) and Surodchana Khambao (women’s 53kg – bronze).

The esports team also made the podium on Saturday as Tanarak Wongkitikun bagged the bronze medal in the Puyo Puyo Champions event.

Tanarak lost 10-1 in the semi-finals to Japan’s Yuki Kurihara, who went on to win the gold medal.

It was the second medal for the esports team following the Naraka: Bladepoint silver on Thursday.

Boxer Kangpi Bokhunthod moved into the quarter-finals of the men’s 55kg event after a 3-2 victory over Samandar Olimov of Uzbekistan on Saturday.

Jakkapon Yomkhot also progressed as he defeated Nepal’s Rabin Nepal with a 5-0 unanimous decision in the men’s 90kg event, but fellow Thai Punrawee Ruenros exited after losing to China’s Yang Chengyu by the same score in the women’s 60kg round of 16.

Ratchanok advances

In badminton, Ratchanok Intanon defeated Kim Jin Hyang of North Korea 21-14, 21-3 in the women’s singles second round but Pornpawee Chochuwong lost to Taiwan’s Lin Hsiang-ti 14-21, 16-21.

She was scheduled to play Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in the third round later on Saturday.

Kunlavut Vitidsarn was another player who had to play two matches in one day. He came through his second round match against Pui Pang Fong of Macau 21-6, 21-10 and was due to play Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dang in the third round later last night.

Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun ended their challenge in the second round after they lost to Daniel Marthin and Leo Rolly Carnando of Indonesia 8-21, 22-24.

Women’s doubles pairs Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat/Nuntakarn Aimsaard and Napapakorn Tungkasatan/Hathaithip Mijad also bowed out in the second round on Saturday.

In table tennis, Suthasini Sawettabut and Orawan Paranang beat Shin Yu-Bin and Joo Cheon-Hui of South Korea 3-2 to reach the women’s doubles semi-finals and assure themselves of at least a bronze medal.

Bayramov highlights Azerbaijan’s growing role as transport hub between Europe and Asia

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has highlighted the country’s growing role as an important transport and logistics hub between Europe and Asia.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bayramov made the remarks during his address to the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The minister said freight volumes along the Middle Corridor have increased by around 90 percent since 2022.

Bayramov noted that projects such as the Baku International Sea Trade Port and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway are contributing to the development of more sustainable and diversified supply chains between Asia and Europe.

He also said the Digital Silk Road project would further strengthen Azerbaijan’s role as a regional digital hub.

The minister stressed that the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), one of the outcomes of the 2025 Washington Summit, would provide unhindered multimodal connectivity between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic while creating new opportunities for regional trade and economic integration.

Concluding his speech, he called for stronger global solidarity, more effective and reliable multilateralism based on international law, and the renewal of the system of cooperation.

“The multilateralism we believe in is principled, inclusive and, above all, capable of delivering concrete results,” Bayramov added.

2027: Yari as Tinubu’s campaign DG strategic, says APC support group

A coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains under the platform of Yari 4 Tinubu Shettima 2027 has described the appointment of former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari, as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council as a strategic decision.

The Presidency announced the composition of the campaign council on August 22, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as chairman, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, as vice chairmen, while Yari was named Director-General.

Speaking with journalists on Saturday in Abuja, the National Coordinator of Yari 4 Tinubu-Shettima 2027, Dr. Francis Chidozie Okoye, said Yari had the political experience to mobilise support for the President across the country’s geopolitical zones.

He said: ‘We express our heartfelt appreciation and unalloyed support for the appointment of our esteemed Patron, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

‘Senator Yari’s proven capacity, political depth, and exceptional track record as a leader make him the ideal strategist to lead our great party to a historic and comprehensive victory in 2027.’

Okoye also disclosed that the group would take its campaign to communities across the country, from the geopolitical zones and states to local government areas, wards and polling units.

He said: ‘Through these state-by-state engagements, we will activate structured support networks down to every polling unit.

‘Crucial to this national campaign is the official unveiling of our flagship project: ‘Operation Deliver Your Polling Unit.’ This strategic initiative is designed to take our message directly to the grassroots, targeting voters right at their specific polling unit levels across the country.

‘Through structured, door-to-door, and community-level engagements, our foot soldiers will interact directly with everyday citizens. We will showcase the tangible achievements of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, breakdown ongoing infrastructural and economic reforms, and clearly communicate why a second term is vital to consolidate these gains and secure long-term prosperity for all Nigerians.’

The group attributed what it described as achievements of the administration to the contributions of members of the Federal Executive Council.

It specifically commended Senator Dave Umahi, Nyesom Wike, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Taiwo Oyedele for their roles in the administration.

The statement said: ‘We proudly commend President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his cabinet ministers who are tirelessly working day and night to deliver on the promises of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

‘Sen. Engr. David Umahi- Honourable Minister of Works, for aggressively revolutionizing national road infrastructure and connecting economic corridors across the federation.

‘Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo – Honourable Minister of Interior, for transforming service delivery, tackling passport backlogs, and reforming internal security architecture and Hon. Taiwo Oyedele – Honourable Minister of Finace and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, for steering robust fiscal policy transformations, stabilizing the economy, and driving comprehensive tax reforms.’

The group’s mobilisation plans come as the APC’s campaign council begins preparations for the 2027 presidential election. Yari has separately said the party’s campaign would focus on its record in government rather than fresh promises.
