Lisa x PlayStation collaboration brings the music icon to gaming

BEING a world-renowned musician does not stop Lisa from enjoying one of her pastimes, which is gaming. That’s why she decided to partner with gaming giant Sony’s PlayStation to bring a new cosmetic to the DualSense Controller, making her presence known more in the gaming world.

This is not the first time that Lisa and PlayStation have worked together, as the K-pop star joined last year for the PS5’s global campaign. This time, however, both parties worked together further by introducing the Lisa Limited Edition DualSense controller.

As a global icon herself, she has iconic figures that fans would know about, especially her ‘dynamic stage presence and her bold approach to fashion.’ With that in mind, PlayStation made sure that her controller skin looks just as glamorous and iconic as the BlackPink member.

The controller uses her favorite color-the Chroma Pearl colorway. The design, meanwhile, is straight up a reference to Lisa, as it includes her iconic bangs and eyes in the DualSense wireless touchpad. Her signature ‘LL’ is also written in the controller.

‘Gaming is something I do whenever I have time to relax, so getting to create this collection with PlayStation was very exciting. I had a lot of fun adding in little details that I knew my fans would notice, and I wanted the fans to have something they can connect with. I’ve always loved expressing myself through music and fashion, so this collaboration gave me a new way to be creative and show a different side of myself. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do,’ said Lisa in the PlayStation blog post.

In Southeast Asia, participating retailers would have this in highly limited stock by October 30, as pre-orders for the controller would start by October 2. For the Philippines, the suggested retail price is P5,411.

Oyo police nab suspected armed robber, recover locally made pistol, live cartridge

The Oyo State Police Command attached to the Command’s Safer Highway Patrol have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered one locally made pistol with a live cartridge.

The move, which is part of the Command’s continuous proactive and intelligence-led policing strategies, said the arrest and recovery followed an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation conducted on 25 September 2026 at about 1730hrs along the Ibadan-Ife Road by Ajia Junction.

In the course of the operation, Ayanlade Oluseyi Olayinka, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Police Command, in a statement, stated that a white-coloured Mazda bus driven by one Sanusi Afeez Adedamola ‘M’ of Owena and travelling from Ibadan towards Ondo State was intercepted and subjected to a search.

The search subsequently led to the arrest of one of the passengers, identified as Emmanuel Kingsley Odoh ‘M’, for unlawful possession of one locally made pistol and a live cartridge.

‘Following the recovery, the firearm and ammunition were immediately secured as exhibits, while the suspect was taken into custody for further investigation’, Ayanlade disclosed.

Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State, thereafter directed that the case be transferred to the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for discreet investigation, arrest of the rest of the syndicate and prosecution upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The development underscores the importance of sustained stop-and-search operations as a critical component of the Command’s preventive policing strategy, particularly along major highways and other identified routes.

When conducted professionally and intelligence-led, such operations help detect and remove firearms and other prohibited items from circulation, disrupt the movement of criminal elements and generate actionable intelligence for broader crime-prevention efforts.

Building on these proactive measures, the Oyo State Police Command reassures members of the public, particularly commuters and residents along major highways, of its continued commitment to their safety and security.

The Command will sustain proactive patrols, intelligence-led stop-and-search operations and other strategic measures to prevent crime and maintain public safety across the State, while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and provide the Police with timely and actionable information.

AFCON Qualifier: Super Eagles survive scare to beat Madagascar 2-1

The Super Eagles of Nigeria survived an early scare to make a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, coming from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday.

Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute when Ehsan Kari headed Madagascar into the lead, with the goal allowed to stand despite appearing to have been scored from an offside position.

The Super Eagles responded by stepping up the pressure in search of an equaliser, with Alex Iwobi having the ball in the net in the 34th minute. However, the effort was ruled out after Akor Adams was adjudged to have impeded the Madagascar goalkeeper.

Nigeria eventually found a breakthrough in first-half stoppage time through George Ilenikhena, who marked his Super Eagles debut with an important equaliser.

The goal capped an impressive debut for Ilenikhena after head coach Eric Chelle handed him his first senior appearance for Nigeria.

Nigeria continued to push after the interval and completed the comeback in the 65th minute through another debutant.

Moses Usor put the Super Eagles ahead with his first goal for Nigeria after receiving an assist from Semi Ajayi, giving Chelle’s side a 2-1 advantage.

The result gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture and provides an important early boost in their pursuit of qualification for the 2027 AFCON.

Chelle’s side will now turn their attention to their second qualifying match, a road fixture against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.

Prominent members of the Cypriot Diaspora honored in New York

Prominent members of the diaspora were honored in New York on Friday evening, during a gathering of the Cypriot diaspora organized by Cypriot organizations at the ‘Terrace on the Park’ community events venue.

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides attended the event, accompanied by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Washington Evangelos Savva and Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Ambassador Maria Michael.

During the event, awards were presented to prominent members of the diaspora. Despina Axiotakis and Stavros Kamilaris received Community Service Awards, while John Josephakis, Global Vice President at NVIDIA, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

President of the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations (FCAO) Kyriakos Papastylianou referred to the strong bond between the Cypriot diaspora and Cyprus, efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus problem, as well as the further expansion of relations between Cyprus and the United States.

Welcoming President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, Papastylianou stressed that geographical distance does not weaken the ties of Cypriots abroad with Cyprus.

Referring to Cyprus-US relations in the fields of defense, security, the economy, investment and technology, he highlighted the role that the Cypriot community can play.

For his part, President of PSEKA Philip Christopher referred to the decisive contribution of the organized diaspora. He recalled that the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations was founded in 1951 and said that since then the Cypriot community has been working for ‘freedom and justice’ in Cyprus.

Christopher said that ‘for the first time we can say that the Republic of Cyprus is a strong strategic partner of America,’ placing particular emphasis on cooperation among Greek Cypriot and Greek American organizations.

Also attending the event were Greece’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, and Greece’s Consul General in New York, Ambassador Ifigenia Kanara.

From Banking to Beauty: How Tomi Akintade introduced Nano Brows in Nigeria

When Oloruntomi Akintade left banking to pursue beauty full-time, she was not simply changing careers. She was betting on an industry that was still largely informal and relatively fragmented in Nigeria.

Today, Akintade is the founder of YBB Beauty International, with operations in Abuja and Lagos, and is recognised in her biography as the artist who introduced Nano Brows to Nigeria.

Her journey reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s beauty industry, where technical expertise, specialised services and professional standards are increasingly becoming differentiators.

Akintade’s entry into beauty began long before YBB Beauty. As a secondary-school student in Lagos, she was already known for styling her friends’ hair. After studying Sociology at the University of Lagos and completing her national youth service in Abuja, she launched a beauty business, Maquilage by Tomi, while pursuing a career in banking.

She subsequently worked with Zenith Bank and FCMB, maintaining the two careers simultaneously for several years. The decision to make beauty her primary career came after encouragement from a fellow beauty technician, Onyekachi of Beauty Ateliers.

Akintade eventually applied the discipline she had acquired in banking to an industry she had always been passionate about.

‘I chose beauty, but I chose to pursue it with the rigour I had learned in banking,’ is effectively the trajectory reflected in her professional journey.

Akintade’s transition into permanent makeup was deliberate.

In 2017, she travelled to the United Kingdom to train in permanent makeup, where she graduated at the top of her class. She later undertook additional cosmetology training in the United States, expanding her knowledge beyond the practical application of beauty techniques into the science underpinning aesthetics.

Back in Abuja, she established her practice, initially offering frontal installations, microblading and lash extensions.

But rather than continue operating as a generalist, Akintade chose specialisation.

Her focus increasingly shifted towards brows and lashes, with an emphasis on precision and results. That decision would eventually provide the foundation for YBB Beauty’s positioning in the permanent makeup market.

The pivotal moment came with Nano Brows.

The technique, which emerged from Korea around 2018, caught Akintade’s attention.

According to her biography, she searched for Black practitioners who had mastered the technique and did not find any at the forefront of the field.

Rather than seeing this as a limitation, she saw a market opportunity.

By 2019, she had committed to mastering Nano Brows and began demonstrating the technique

on models in Abuja. At the time, microblading was significantly more familiar to Nigerian consumers, while Nano Brows remained largely unknown.

The early results helped establish the proposition.

Clients responded to the natural appearance of the healed brows, while the successful trials helped reduce some of the hesitation surrounding permanent makeup.

By 2020, Akintade had opened her Lagos studio, further establishing YBB Beauty’s presence and her position as a pioneer of Nano Brows in Nigeria.

The evolution of YBB Beauty reflects an approach that places technical expertise at the centre of the business.

Akintade’s operating philosophy is built around three principles: safety, science and professionalism. The company positions itself not simply as a beauty service provider but as a solution-driven business focused on addressing clients’ aesthetic needs through considered procedures.

That positioning is particularly relevant as Nigeria’s beauty economy becomes more sophisticated.

For operators in the permanent makeup space, differentiation is no longer limited to aesthetics.

Training, hygiene, technical knowledge, client experience and consistency can determine the sustainability of a beauty practice.

Akintade’s strategy has therefore been to build credibility around the craft itself.

The biography notes that she has prioritised results over certificates, reflecting an emphasis on demonstrated technical ability rather than credentials alone.

Akintade’s ambitions extend beyond the growth of her own client base. She intends to train more artists and contribute to a more inclusive permanent makeup industry in Africa.

Her outlook is that as the technique develops, Nano Brows will become an increasingly important part of the repertoire of professional permanent makeup artists.

This could prove significant for an industry where technical knowledge is often acquired through individual practitioners rather than structured professional ecosystems.

For Akintade, building YBB Beauty is therefore also about building knowledge around the discipline.

The company’s name, YBB, stands for Young Black Billionaires, reflecting the founder’s ambition to build a beauty house centred on empowerment, ambition and a new standard of practice.

Akintade’s journey illustrates the commercial possibilities that can emerge when a traditional career skill set is applied to a creative industry.

Banking gave her exposure to structure and discipline. Beauty gave her the opportunity to build around a personal passion. International training provided technical depth, while Nano Brows offered a specialised category through which she could differentiate her business.

Today, YBB Beauty operates across Abuja and Lagos, while Akintade is focused on expandingthe pool of trained practitioners and shaping the future of permanent makeup in Nigeria. Her story is ultimately not just about eyebrows.

It is about identifying an emerging category early, developing the expertise to compete within it and building a business around a standard of service.

For a Nigerian beauty industry moving increasingly towards specialisation and professionalisation, Tomi Akintade is betting that the next phase of growth will belong to practitioners who can combine artistry with science, business discipline and technical excellence.

All 50 Bangkok districts declared disaster areas

All 50 districts of Bangkok were declared disaster zones on Saturday after almost 48 hours of heavy rain that caused widespread flooding, traffic problems and disruptions to daily life.

Schools will close on Monday and government workers are being encouraged to stay home as Bangkok tries to keep traffic off flooded roads, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said.

The disaster declaration allows the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), other state agencies and local administrations to respond more quickly and systematically in affected areas.

It came as heavy rain continued to cause flooding and traffic problems in several parts of the capital, with eastern Bangkok among the hardest-hit areas.

Pathum Thani province also declared Rangsit municipality an emergency disaster zone as rain continued into Saturday evening.

A cell broadcast alert was sent to Bangkok residents shortly after 9am, saying water levels in canals were already at critical levels and were expected to rise further.

According to the Meteorological Department, the main cause of the unsettled weather is a strong low-pressure system covering the lower Central Plains, Bangkok and surrounding provinces. The southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand is also strengthening.

Heavy rain is expected to continue until Sunday nationwide, the department said.

September is the peak of the rainy season in Bangkok but it has been wetter than usual, according to figures from the BMA Drainage and Sewerage Department.

The capital recorded 487mm of rain between Sept 1 and 25, compared to an average of 269mm for the same period from 1991 to 2020, it said.

Water levels began to stabilise around midday Saturday thanks to the city’s pumping stations, which were operating at full capacity, pumping out 1,200 cubic metres per second combined.

‘If the rain stops, it is expected that it will take 2-3 days to drain the floodwater,’ Mr Chadchart said in a mid-afternoon update broadcast on social media.

The governor also assured the public there would be no repeat of the flooding catastrophe of 2011 and ‘no need to panic’, as some people raced to stock up on essentials in case the flooding worsens.

Witnesses reported a Makro store in Ram Inthra was packed, with the parking lot overflowing onto the street. People were stocking up on essentials, with instant noodles, drinking water and canned fish seen in every shopping cart. (Story continues below)

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was returning ahead of schedule from London, where he was leading an investment roadshow, to monitor the flood response.

Addressing officials during a teleconference before his departure, around 4pm Thailand time, he stressed that the response must integrate weather monitoring, disaster mitigation, irrigation and transport under a single, seamless management framework.

Upstream from Bangkok at the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province, water discharges were gradually being increased to 1,950 cubic metres per second, from 1,850 cu m/sec, according to the Royal Irrigation Department.

People living in low-lying areas along the Chao Phraya, downstream of the dam and along the Noi River were urged to closely monitor water levels and official announcements and prepare for possible changes in the situation.

Varying degrees of flooding were also reported in 20 other provinces: Nakhon Ratchasima, Chanthaburi, Phetchabun, Chon Buri, Chachoengsao, Buri Ram, Surin, Sing Buri, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit, Rayong, Ang Thong, Chai Nat, Uthai Thani, Prachin Buri, Ayutthaya, Sa Kaeo, Phitsanulok, Suphan Buri and Nakhon Phanom.

Ancient grottoes, Kung Fu fighting and then some

Victor Wembanyama made headlines when news of him training in a Shaolin Temple in China spread in 2025. When I first heard the story, I was thinking about one particular temple I went to, but I was unsure if that was the same place. Then I got more details of the story, and I realized that it was. It took me back to the time I visited Luoyang.

The Longmen Grottoes

Luoyang is an important historic city because it used to be one of the capitals of China’s ruling dynasties centuries ago. It also served as a center of Buddhism back in its heyday. A walk around the city center’s historic district reminded me of similar places in Beijing, but on a smaller scale, with its traditional houses and shops lining the streets. However, one of my main destinations in this part of the country was to see the Longmen Grottoes.

True to its status as a former Buddhist center, the Longmen Grottoes showcase an impressive display of artistry. As you walk up to the main carvings, you’ll see detailed (from minuscule to massive) carvings and depictions of Buddha and treatments for illnesses. The area has more than 2,000 caves, over 100,000 Buddhist statues, and over 2,800 inscriptions. Some of the earliest carvings date to the 5th century. Various artists from all over China imitated the style they saw during their visits. It’s also an open-air museum that displays the changes in aesthetics over the centuries. Its setting along the Yi River and amid the mountains creates a serene and grandiose ambiance.

If you’re ticking off UNESCO World Heritage Sites, you might want to add the Longmen Grottoes whenever you visit China. You can access this spot by public transportation or just hire a car to take you there.

Train like a Shaolin

I tried different martial arts when I was growing up; from Taekwondo to Wushu to Arnis. Even if it has been years (decades) since the last time I practiced, the interest has remained. That’s why when I was in Luoyang, I had to include a stop at the Shaolin Temple. The temple dates to 495 A.D., when Emperor Xiaowendi of the Wei dynasty ordered its construction. It then became the birthplace of Zen Buddhism. The sprawling complex lies along Mt. Song. The latter is one of the country’s most sacred mountains. Its cultural and historical significance earned it a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. You wouldn’t think of it as a place of solitude for meditation because of its popularity with locals and the crowds coming and going. I could imagine Victor Wembanyama towering over all of the monks and their masters during his time here.

One of the highlights of a visit was watching the monks perform martial arts. I remembered the hours and years my brothers and I spent kicking, punching, sparring, practicing forms and defensive techniques, stretching (sitting or standing in a front or side split felt like an eternity even if it only lasted for a few minutes), acrobatics, and anything related to the martial art we practiced at the time. I was particularly fond of Wushu because of its ballet-like and smooth movements that just looked cool.

The monks lined up as the host called them to the stage. They were of varying heights and ages, some of whom still looked like young boys. They displayed their prowess with splits, flips, and acrobatic movements. They showed intense focus when they started using weapons, one of which was a spear that a monk bent using his neck. It was a fascinating display of martial arts that also took me down memory lane.

Seeing Wembanyama’s name attached to the Shaolin Temple initially felt like a clash of two different worlds, but experiencing the temple firsthand makes it entirely understandable. Luoyang isn’t just a city frozen in its dynastic past; it’s a living testament to dedication, whether through the painstaking, centuries-old carvings of the Longmen Grottoes or the lifelong discipline of the Shaolin monks.

My trip down memory lane reminded me why these ancient traditions still captivate us today. Whether you are an NBA superstar looking to sharpen your focus or a traveler seeking awe-inspiring history, Luoyang leaves an unforgettable impression.

Fidelity leads FTSE stocks gain as bank trading surges

Nigerian stocks included in the FTSE Russell Frontier Market Index recorded a broadly positive performance this week, with 16 of the 31 stocks gaining as investor attention remained focused on large-cap equities following Nigeria’s return to the global index.

Six stocks declined, while nine closed unchanged, according to BusinessDay analysis of the weekly performance recorded by the Nigerian Exchange Group.

The strongest gain came from NAHCO, which rose 16.92 percent during the week, followed by Fidelity Bank, up 9.56 percent. Stanbic IBTC and NASCON also recorded strong gains of 7.19 percent and 7.10 percent, respectively.

Other notable gainers included Zenith Bank, which advanced 4.90 percent, Fidson Healthcare, up 5.25 percent, and First HoldCo, which gained 3.13 percent. GTCO rose 2.39 percent, UBA gained 2.04 percent, and Access Holdings increased 1.84 percent.

‘Financial services stocks leading the gainers is understandable given the recent 350bps MPR cut to 23%. Lower interest rates can support credit growth, reduce funding costs and improve the valuation of financial assets. The sector is also one of the most liquid parts of the NGX, making it a major beneficiary when investor sentiment improves,’ said Kehinde Jones, head of research and strategy at Anchoria Securities.

‘Looking ahead, the outlook for financial services stocks remains positive, but the key will be how quickly the rate cut translates into lower lending rates, stronger credit growth and improved economic activity.

‘Investors will also need to watch net interest margins, loan growth, asset quality and impairment charges. For the broader equities market, lower rates, improving market accessibility and stronger investor participation provide a supportive environment, although valuations and earnings growth will become increasingly important after the strong gains already recorded.’

The week’s gains came shortly after Nigeria officially returned to FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market status on September 21, reopening the market to a wider pool of global benchmark-tracking investors.

FTSE Russell’s reclassification has been associated with expectations of increased foreign participation and liquidity in eligible Nigerian equities.

‘The outlook remains constructive, but there are risks. The 350-bps MPR cut to 23 percent should support liquidity and equities, but a faster-than-expected easing cycle could also narrow the yield advantage that attracts foreign capital,’ Abiodun Ogunniyi, head of research at GTI Investment said.

‘The 2027 pre-election fiscal cycle is another risk if increased spending puts pressure on inflation, the naira, or interest rates. Globally, renewed tightening in developed markets could also divert some capital away from emerging markets.’

Fidelity Bank leads trading activity

Trading activity among the constituents was led by Fidelity Bank Plc, which recorded 893.69 million shares valued at N18.30 billion, followed by Zenith Bank Plc with 260.08 million shares worth N34.00 billion.

Collectively, the 31 FTSE Russell constituents recorded 2.21 billion shares in turnover worth N120.31 billion during the week.

This accounted for nearly half (47.1percent) of the entire Nigerian Exchange’s (NGX) total weekly equity turnover of 4.69 billion shares valued at N240.82 billion.

The activity is important because the return of Nigeria to the FTSE Russell benchmark does not necessarily mean that buying will be evenly distributed across all 31 stocks.

Initial market activity has shown that global investors can concentrate demand in larger and more liquid names, particularly major banks.

Ayomide Emmanuel, investment officer at Marathon Asset and Fund Management, noted that the divergence between gainers and decliners reflects strategic portfolio rebalancing.

‘Investors are rotating capital out of mid-cap banking and consumer goods names to fund positions in higher-yielding Tier-1 banks and blue-chip equities,’ Emmanuel said.

‘Additionally, local institutional positioning ahead of upcoming market liquidity events and corporate disclosures has induced selective profit-taking across secondary constituent names.’

However, market observers caution against expecting an immediate, across-the-board windfall. In a one-on-one session, Victor Odulate, Esq., director at Redhill Media, emphasised that full institutional deployment takes time.

‘Regarding this week’s performance, it is simply too early to attribute it strictly to the FTSE Russell re-listing,’ Odulate said.

‘Reclassification only took effect on Monday, September 21st, and institutional passive funds do not deploy all their capital at once. Due to post-earnings drift and portfolio management strategies, institutional buyers spread their entries out over time, meaning any significant market reaction will take months, not days, to fully play out. Furthermore, the FTSE Russell Frontier Markets Index is not tracked by a massive volume or value of funds compared to heavier indices like the MSCI.’

On the losing side, Wema Bank fell 3.76 percent, making it the biggest decliner among the constituents.

MTN Nigeria declined 3.03 percent, while United Capital, Nigerian Breweries, Dangote Sugar, and FCMB fell 2.29 percent, 1.87 percent, 0.70 percent, and 0.45 percent, respectively.

Looking ahead, market participants expect several major catalysts over the next three months to dictate market direction.

First, sentiment is anticipated to shift as the prospective listing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery approaches, which could help curb capital bleeding from secondary market equities.

Second, the upcoming Q3 earnings season alongside audited H1 results for Tier-1 banks will provide updated clarity on corporate health and drive the next wave of positioning.
