COREN charges newly inducted The Poly Ibadan graduates on competence

THE newly inducted and registered Higher National Diploma (HND) engineering graduates of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, into the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) have been charged to uphold competence, integrity, accountability and service to humanity.

Registrar, COREN, Professor O.A.U. Uche, gave the charge during the induction ceremony held at the Assembly Hall, North Campus of the institution in Ibadan.

Professor Uche, speaking through the past chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ibadan branch, Ibraheem Folarin Bello, who represented the COREN president, Professor Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, told the graduates that they were not only completing an academic programme, but also stepping into a noble profession that shapes nations, builds economies and safeguards lives.

He noted that engineering is more than education, drawings, and software, describing it as a sacred trust.

‘Bridges must not fail. Buildings must not collapse. Systems must not endanger the public. The oath you took today is therefore not ceremonial; it is a covenant. A covenant to uphold competence, integrity, accountability and service to humanity,’ he said.

He added that as a regulatory authority, COREN ensures that engineering practice in Nigeria meets acceptable standards, protects public safety, and promotes excellence. ‘As your professional home, Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) will nurture your growth, provide mentorship, and uphold the ethics and honour of the profession. Together, these institutions remind you that engineering is both a privilege and a responsibility.

‘From this moment, your signature will carry weight. Your calculations will affect lives. Your decisions will influence communities. Let excellence be your habit, ethics your compass, and continuous learning your lifestyle.’

He stated that Nigeria needs engineering technologists of courage who will resist compromise, reject mediocrity, and build with integrity.
