Avoid chemicals that cause food poisoning

Basically, food items are the sources of valuable nutrients such as carbohydrates that provide energy, proteins for cellular growth, fats and oils do provide a concentrated source of energy, insulate and protect the l organs, and help the body absorb essential nutrients. Others such as micronutrients like the vital vitamins and magical minerals support the general wellbeing of the human body.

While the food items we consume on daily basis must be safe and wholesome some of them are vulnerable to the absorption of poisonous chemicals that could lead to severe pain, different diseases and worse still, death. We all must therefore, understand what these chemicals are and avoid them through the value chain of food production, harvest, cooking and processing as well as packaging and preservation.

In fact, experts on human nutrition insist that most

food poisoning are caused by infections with microbes-viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

Breaking it down, chemical food poisoning happens when you eat or drink food contaminated with harmful toxic substances, heavy metals, or artificial chemicals rather than living germs. Common chemicals include pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, or rodenticides left on crops or near food storage.

Also, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, or arsenic absorbed from soil, water, or old containers cause food poisoning. And as far as industrial pollutants are concerned, chemicals like PFAS, PCBs, or cleaning product residues are listed as the ones to avoid.

As for natural toxins these include poisons found naturally in certain mushrooms, wild plants, or specific marine life. Yet, there are some food items that are identified as sources of poisoning

These are leafy greens, poultry, and deli meats. They are among the top foods frequently linked to food poisoning outbreaks and recalls.

Amongst the leafy greens are lettuce, spinach, and kale. They often carry E. coli or Salmonella from dirty irrigation water or nearby animal fields.

Note that warning has always been given about cooked rice left out at room temperature as it lets Bacillus cereus bacteria spores multiply quickly.

On their part, chicken and turkey frequently harbor Salmonella and Campylobacter due to contamination during processing.

As for meats, processed meats and hot dogs can grow Listeria bacteria easily, even inside cold refrigerators. When choosing ground beef know that undercooked beef can mix surface bacteria like E. coli throughout the meat during the grinding process.

Shellfish: Oysters, clams, and mussels filter contaminated coastal water and can carry dangerous Vibrio bacteria or algae toxins.

Also, unpasteurised dairy and soft cheeses such as items made from raw milk (like queso fresco or brie) lack the pasteurisation heat needed to kill harmful germs like Listeria and E. coli, while raw or undercooked eggs commonly spread Salmonella infections.

It should also be noted that raw sprouts like alfalfa or bean require warm, humid conditions to grow, which also act as a breeding ground for bacteria.

Not left out us uncooked flour because it is an agricultural product that bypasses a kill-step, frequently testing positive for harmful pathogens like E. coli. But beyond all of these listed items what are the symptoms of food poisoning? That is the critical question

The typical symptoms are observed through the upset of the stomach along with nausea. Others include vomiting and stomach cramps

diarrhea, dizziness, headache, or confusion in severe cases. Victims are well advised to consult the doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

With regards to medical help, seek emergency care immediately if you suspect poisoning from wild mushrooms, heavy chemicals, or experience severe symptoms like trouble breathing or persistent vomiting.

If indeed, you are a victim some of the recommended basic treatments and care needed include that of having enough

rest by giving your body time to recover. Another step to take is that of hydration: Take small, frequent sips of water or electrolyte drinks to prevent dehydration.

The next consideration is that of taking bland foods. You are advised to eat plain items like crackers, rice, or toast only when you feel ready.

To prevent food poisoning, follow the four steps to food safety: Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill. Keep hands and surfaces clean.
