The allegations against Shehu Buba Umar, Bauchi South Senatorial District representative in the National Assembly, have generated fresh controversy across northern Nigeria, with security analysts, political actors and members of the public divided over claims that the senator may have links to individuals involved in banditry.
At the centre of the latest controversy is Hassan, a whistleblower who made the allegations during a recorded video conversation that is trending on social media platforms.
Hassan claimed he had gathered photographs and video recordings which, according to him, showed Umar interacting with people he identified as bandits.
He further alleged that suspected bandits were accommodated at the senator’s residence, where they allegedly interacted with him and shared meals.
Hassan also claimed that when he attempted to leave Nigeria for Niger Republic, Umar allegedly sent his Personal Assistant to locate him.
According to the whistleblower, both he and the aide were subsequently apprehended by security personnel. He said he was later released after presenting photographs and videos which he claimed supported his allegations.
The seriousness of the claims has heightened calls for the Department of State Services (DSS) to conduct an independent investigation, particularly because Umar previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence.
Those calling for a probe argue that allegations involving an incumbent senator and a former chairman of a sensitive national security committee cannot be adequately resolved through social media exchanges, political statements or competing media narratives.
They contend that the DSS, as a domestic intelligence agency, is better positioned to establish whether the people appearing in the videos are linked to criminal networks, when and where the footage was recorded, and whether the materials have been altered, misrepresented or taken out of context.
A credible investigation, they argue, would serve two purposes: establish whether the allegations have any factual basis and protect the senator against accusations that cannot be substantiated.
The need for verification has become particularly important following a recent review by PRNigeria of one of the videos circulated in connection with the allegations.
PRNigeria reported that the viral material combined footage from apparently unrelated events. According to its verification, some of the men seen in one section of the video were pilgrims who visited Umar in 2023, rather than confirmed bandits. It also found that footage showing men displaying international passports was unrelated to the other material.
The organisation subsequently described the viral content as false and misleading.
The finding has introduced another dimension into the controversy, highlighting the risks associated with relying on social media videos as evidence in allegations involving terrorism, banditry and other serious crimes.
The controversy surrounding Umar is also not new.
In 2024, Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State governor, accused the senator of supporting banditry. Umar rejected the allegation at the time, describing it as fabricated and malicious.
The claims later resurfaced through petitions and online campaigns.
Rural Community Development Outreach, a civil society organisation, petitioned the United States Consulate in 2024 over alleged links between Umar and terrorism. The senator, through his Legislative Assistant, rejected the allegations.
The dispute subsequently entered the legal arena after some individuals were arrested and charged over alleged cyberstalking and defamation of the senator.
Court proceedings in the matter included allegations made against Umar concerning alleged sponsorship of banditry, although the defendants pleaded not guilty.
In September 2025, a coalition of groups in the North-East also rejected the allegations against the senator, describing them as politically motivated attempts to damage his reputation.
Against this background, the latest allegations by Hassan have reopened questions about whether previous claims against the senator were adequately investigated or whether they were primarily political disputes.
Umar’s camp has now challenged Hassan to take his allegations before the appropriate authorities and submit whatever evidence he claims to possess.
In a statement issued by the senator’s supporters, the camp said complaints concerning the allegations and circulation of the videos had already been submitted to relevant security authorities since 2025.
It alleged that Hassan had continued to make the claims through media platforms without appearing before security agencies to substantiate them, despite reportedly being invited to present evidence.
The senator’s supporters said they had no objection to a formal investigation and urged anyone possessing credible evidence against him to submit it to the appropriate authorities.
‘We have no objection to investigations or inquiries by the appropriate authorities,’ the statement said.
The senator’s camp argued that allegations involving terrorism and banditry should not be tried through social media or media appearances but should be subjected to established investigative and judicial procedures.
It also accused Hassan of attempting to damage Umar’s reputation through what it described as unverified allegations.
The statement further urged Hassan to present whatever evidence he possesses to security agencies, saying a formal investigation would allow the claims to be independently assessed.
‘We will not accept the use of baseless allegations, defamation, or the dissemination of unverified information as a political tool to tarnish someone’s reputation,’ the statement said.
The demand for a DSS investigation comes amid continuing security challenges across northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping and other forms of organised criminality have affected communities, agriculture, transportation and local economies.
The allegations therefore carry implications beyond the reputation of the senator.
If verified, any evidence establishing a relationship between a serving legislator and criminal networks would raise serious national security concerns and require appropriate law-enforcement action.
Conversely, if the allegations are found to be based on manipulated videos, unrelated footage or unsupported claims, an official investigation would provide an avenue to clear the senator’s name and potentially identify those responsible for disseminating false information.
Security experts and other stakeholders have consequently stressed the importance of evidence-based investigation rather than political or social-media adjudication.
The DSS, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army and other relevant agencies could independently examine the materials, establish their provenance and determine whether the persons appearing in them have any connection with criminal groups.
Until such an investigation is concluded and credible evidence is established, the allegations against Umar remain unproven.
The latest development has nevertheless placed renewed pressure on security agencies to address the claims transparently, particularly given the sensitive nature of the allegations and Umar’s previous involvement in parliamentary oversight of national security.
The central question now is not whether allegations have been made, but whether the evidence being presented can withstand independent scrutiny by competent security and judicial authorities.
