Barcelona strengthened their La Liga title credentials with a commanding 5-0 victory over Valencia on Sunday, maintaining their perfect start to the season and moving two points clear at the top of the table.
Lamine Yamal scored twice in a dazzling display as Hansi Flick’s side recorded their fourth consecutive league victory, underlining their early-season dominance and sending a warning to their title rivals.
Fermín López, Raphinha and Pedri were also on target as Barcelona overwhelmed Valencia at Mestalla, with the champions controlling the game from the opening minutes.
Yamal leads Barcelona’s attacking charge
Yamal opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a clever lofted finish after López produced a superb pass over the Valencia defence.
The 19-year-old thought he had doubled Barcelona’s advantage shortly afterwards when he fired into the near corner, but VAR ruled the effort out for a marginal offside.
Barcelona did not have to wait long for a second goal, however, as López produced a crisp finish in the 22nd minute after Anthony Gordon created the opportunity.
Yamal and López continued to threaten as Barcelona dominated possession and created chances, with López also striking the post before half-time.
Yamal had only trained lightly on Saturday after suffering a knock, but there was little evidence of any discomfort as he produced another influential performance.
Flick’s side show title-winning authority
Barcelona’s victory means they are the only team in La Liga to have won all four of their opening matches.
Their latest performance also highlighted the depth of attacking options available to Flick, with Raphinha scoring his sixth goal of the season after converting from close range following another López assist.
Pedri then added Barcelona’s fourth after combining with Dani Olmo, before Yamal completed the rout with his second goal.
Flick was delighted with his team’s performance but insisted there remains room for improvement.
‘We played a fantastic game; it was nearly perfect. We controlled; we were dominant, and this is what I want from the team,’ the Barcelona manager said.
‘Nothing is perfect; you can always improve. If it’s perfect, then you can stop working.’
Barcelona open early gap at the top
The victory moves Barcelona two points clear at the summit after Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Friday.
Unbeaten Alavés moved into second place after a 5-2 victory over Osasuna, but Barcelona remain the only side with a 100 per cent record.
For Valencia, the defeat extended a difficult start to the campaign. Los Che remain bottom of the table and are still searching for their first victory.
With four wins from four games, an in-form Yamal and a rapidly developing attacking unit, Flick’s Barcelona have made a powerful early statement in their bid to retain the La Liga title.
