In a country where high costs and complex systems can delay medical treatment, MediCard Philippines, the healthcare arm of life insurer AIA Philippines, is seeking to make healthcare more accessible through digital innovation.
The company recently launched MediCard Go (MedGo), its upgraded digital platform designed to help members access, navigate, and manage their healthcare needs more easily. At the launch event, MediCard CEO Julian Mengual introduced the app as more than just a digital tool, positioning it as an everyday health companion.
Simplifying the healthcare experience
The launch addresses persistent challenges in the local healthcare experience. Administrative hurdles, including system downtime, login difficulties, and lengthy processes for securing Letters of Authorization (LOAs), locating accredited providers, and tracking reimbursements, can create delays and inconvenience for patients.
Findings from the Department of Health (DOH) point to inefficiencies in data retrieval and transaction processing, while research from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted delayed reimbursements and complex claims processes as challenges in health financing. Meanwhile, with one in five Filipinos reportedly uncertain about navigating medical care and many setting aside only around P10,000 for health emergencies, some patients may postpone seeking medical advice until a minor concern becomes more serious.
MedGo aims to address these challenges through a new, scalable platform designed to simplify administrative processes. Mobile registration has been streamlined, while automated LOA submissions can generate responses in as little as three seconds, according to the company.
Reimbursement processing has also been simplified through automated case creation, allowing members to scan receipts, upload required documents, and track claim statuses using their smartphones without presenting a physical membership card.
Through the app, members can access their digital identification cards, view their benefits, book appointments, use online consultation services, and search for MediCard clinics, doctors, and hospitals.
Digital tools for more personalized health management
Eligible users can also access FaceScan technology, which uses a 30-second facial scan to provide insights into as many as 28 health biomarkers, including indicators related to blood pressure and blood sugar, as well as features related to mental health and well-being. Programs such as LiveWell offer dedicated support for managing chronic conditions, including hypertension and diabetes.
‘People don’t think about healthcare as merely a series of digital transactions. They simply want to get an appointment, see a doctor, get tests done, or be reimbursed for a service without added complexity,’ Mengual said.
‘That’s how we approached MedGo. We listened closely to member feedback and redesigned the experience around their needs. Beyond introducing new capabilities, we focused on creating a more seamless journey that allows our members to rely on their preferred services that are easier to access, simpler to navigate, and more intuitive to use,’ he added.
Bridging the gap between health awareness and action
The launch comes as Filipinos increasingly express interest in taking a more proactive approach to their health. AIA Philippines’ 2026 Rethink Healthy study found that 70 percent of Filipinos reject a ‘Bahala Na’ (come what may) attitude toward physical health. However, 83 percent reportedly act only after experiencing a personal or family health crisis, highlighting the gap between the intention to stay healthy and taking action before health concerns escalate.
‘Convenience can determine whether someone acts on a health need or puts it off,’ Mengual said. ‘By bringing more of the healthcare journey into one connected experience, MedGo helps members take action sooner and manage their health with greater confidence. It strengthens our ability to serve members today while creating a future-ready healthcare ecosystem for tomorrow.’
Building a connected healthcare ecosystem
Marking a milestone following MediCard’s acquisition by AIA Philippines in 2023, MedGo is designed to complement, rather than replace, the physical clinics and nationwide provider networks that members already rely on.
The platform supports MediCard’s broader vision of encouraging people to approach healthcare as an ongoing priority rather than a once-a-year obligation. ‘Technology only matters if, in the health space, this enables people to live Healthier, Longer, Better Lives,’ Mengual said.

‘Our commitment is to continue listening to our members, strengthening the platform and improving the experience so they can spend less time navigating processes and more time focusing on their health. This is why we have a dedicated team who continues to expand the services provided and enhance the user experience through regular deployments that are shaped by the feedback and insights provided by our members,’ he added.
