For many Filipinos, the neighborhood pharmacy is a familiar stop for health and wellness needs, including medicines and other everyday essentials. But today, it’s becoming something more: a convenient access point for preventive health care.
In celebration of World Pharmacy Week, with the theme ‘Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures,’ there is a growing recognition of the evolving role of pharmacists, not just as dispensers of medicine, but as trusted healthcare partners helping communities stay protected.
From Dispensing Medicines to Delivering Prevention
Today, trained and certified pharmacists may administer select adult vaccines in many of the major pharmacies.. This reflects a positive move toward making preventive healthcare more accessible. With proper training and certification, pharmacists are now equipped to deliver vaccines, helping expand the country’s network of immunizers.
Healthcare that Fits into Everyday Life
Convenience is often an area of concern when it comes to acting on health decisions. For many adults balancing work and personal responsibilities, finding time to get information and take action on health, especially preventive health, is often a challenge.
Pharmacists help as allies of physicians in bringing preventive healthcare closer to those who need them. With pharmacies located in easily accessible areas like malls, neighborhoods, and transport hubs, they offer a convenient way to get information and services, even alongside daily errand runs.
Today, health screenings, as well as onsite vaccination against diseases including HPV, pneumonia, flu, among others, are available in these settings, offering another touchpoint in a more connected healthcare system where prevention is within reach.
Global evidence also shows that expanding pharmacist-led vaccination helps improve access and uptake of immunization services, particularly in community settings.
As we recognize the role of pharmacists this World Pharmacy Week, it’s worth rethinking what a simple pharmacy visit can offer.
