Proper nutrition and appropriate supplementation before pregnancy can help support maternal health and the early development of the baby, the Department of Health (DOH) said, underscoring the importance of consulting a healthcare provider when preparing for pregnancy.
Despite preventive measures, some pregnancies are affected by congenital conditions such as spina bifida, a neural tube defect that occurs when the spinal column does not close completely during early fetal development.
A retrospective study conducted at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) found that approximately eight out of every 10,000 babies born in the Philippines have spina bifida.
Although the causes of spina bifida are not fully understood, certain factors can increase the risk, including insufficient folate before conception and during the early weeks of pregnancy.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the DOH emphasize the importance of folic acid supplementation before and during early pregnancy to help reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
‘Through proper care, we can help reduce the risk of certain conditions, including spina bifida,’ the DOH said.
Understanding hydrocephalus
Spina bifida can be associated with hydrocephalus, a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid-the clear liquid surrounding the brain and spinal cord-accumulates in the brain’s cavities. This buildup can increase pressure inside the skull and may require medical evaluation and treatment.
Although hydrocephalus is frequently associated with spina bifida, it can also occur independently and affect both children and adults.
Beyond prevention and medical care, the DOH stressed the importance of promoting acceptance, respect, and equal opportunities for people living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Access to appropriate healthcare, support services, and inclusive environments can help them live with dignity and participate actively in their communities.
The department encouraged women planning to become pregnant to consult their nearest health center or healthcare provider for guidance on preconception care and appropriate supplementation.
‘Consult the nearest health center or healthcare provider for guidance in preparing for pregnancy, including appropriate supplementation with Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) containing folic acid and other essential vitamins and minerals, as recommended by your healthcare provider,’ the DOH said.
Early preparation, informed healthcare decisions, and appropriate support can help promote healthier pregnancies while improving awareness and understanding of conditions such as spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
