The assistant accountant of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dkimbie Gittens, will return to a magistrate’s court on November 5 after he was granted half a million dollars (One Guyana dollar=US$0.004 cents) bail by a High Court.
Gittens, 30, who had been charged with the theft of five million dollars from GECOM, had been refused bail and remanded to prison ever since his first appearance before a city magistrate on September 25.
But his attorney Brenden Glasford said he had been able to get bail for his client when the matter came before High Court judge, Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham.
Glasford had approached the High Court for judicial review, saying that the magistrate’s reasons for refusing bail were not in conformity with the provisions of the Bail Act 2022.
Gittens was charged with larceny by clerk or servant in violation of the Criminal Law Offences Act. His last appearance in the magistrates’ court was on October 15.
Police accused him of stealing the money between September 15 and 16, 2025. He was arrested on September 22.
A total of 13 people had been detained by police and subsequently released on station bail.
