The Medical Students Association (MSA) of the Family Health University (FHU) has presented over 2,000 menstrual pads to selected female students from Basic Schools in the Ledzokuku Municipality in the Greater Accra Region at a special ceremony last Friday.

Each of the 650 girls received a three-month supply of menstrual pads to help them manage their menstruation safely, so they do not miss school for lack of pads.

The event, which was the third edition, had the theme ‘Supporting menstrual health, securing the future of girls’ and dubbed ‘Pad a girl initiative,’ was organised by the Medical Students Association of the Family Health University in collaboration with the Ledzokuku Municipal Education Directorate.

The presentation of the pads and the health education was part of activities marking this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is celebrated on May 28 every year.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ledzokuku Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Theresa Tetteh, was full of praise for the medical students and the Family Health University for their regular support to the girls in the municipality.

She used the occasion to commend all stakeholders who keep collaborating with the Ghana Education Service towards the training and the promotion of education in the municipality and the country as a whole.

‘Your period is not a weakness. It is a sign of good health. It is not a reason to stay home. It is not a reason to be teased. You deserve to manage it with safety and pride. ‘Pad the Girl’ is not just about handing out products to the girls. It is about handing back days, dignity, and dreams,’ she stated.

Dr. Leticia Appiah, Community Health Department at the Family Health University said, ‘Supporting menstrual health is a shared responsibility. When we ensure that every girl has access to sanitary products, proper education, and a supportive environment, we are not just addressing hygiene needs but we are protecting education, confidence, and future opportunities.’

She explained that a girl should never have to choose between her dignity and her schooling, and by standing together, they were securing a healthier, stronger, and more equitable future for all girls.

The President of the Medical Students Association, Bernard Opoku Jnr, commended the various sponsors for supporting them so they could also assist the female students with the pads.

Madam Issahaku Humu, Girl Education Officer for the Ledzokuku Education Directorate, said the proper upbringing of the girl child was the responsibility of all, and called for more support towards the welfare of both girls and boys.

She pledged to continue collaborating with various institutions towards the proper upbringing and training of all children, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, religion, political and other affiliations.

The Ministry of the Interior has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026 as holiday in commemoration of the Islamic Eid-Ul-Adha, as contained in a release authored by the Sector Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

This is the date on the Islamic lunar calendar on which Muslims undertake the sacrifice of livestock such as sheep, camels, goats or cows. It commemorates the test of Prophet Abraham’s faith when he was asked to sacrifice his son Ishmael, but just as he was about to do so, a ram appeared on the authority of God. This has become an annual ritual for Muslims across the world. For Muslims undertaking the Hajj, the sacrifice is done on the day of the ascension of Mount Arafat, as part of the Hajj rituals.

The date is preceded by the purchase of livestock by those who can afford it. It also features the appearance of makeshift livestock markets across the country. At this time of the year, livestock traders bring in ruminants from countries such as Nigeria and Niger for sale in Ghana.

Eid-Ul-Adha is the second Islamic festival which comes after Eid-Ul-Fitr. The latter is one which climaxes the month-long fasting by Muslims.

The Vice Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs, Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, has appealed to chiefs to refrain from engaging in partisan politics, stressing that such actions could undermine justice and peaceful coexistence in society.

According to the Ahafo Ano South West Member of Parliament (MP), chiefs who openly declare support for political parties risk compromising their neutrality in settling disputes and administering justice in their traditional areas.

Speaking to journalists after members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at Manhyia Palace last Wednesday, Mr. Dapaah appealed to traditional rulers to remain neutral at all times.

‘It is my humble plea to our respected chiefs to stay neutral as far as partisan politics is concerned,’ he stated.

He explained that when a chief openly aligns with a political party, the tendency for bias in judgment becomes high, a situation he said does not promote peace.

‘Any time a chief decides to show support for a political party, the tendency for such a chief to show bias in judgment is high, and that does not ensure peace,’ he stressed.

Mr. Dapaah noted that chiefs play critical roles in maintaining peace and unity in communities, hence the need for them to avoid political affiliations.

He added that the Parliamentary Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs is mandated to promote religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among people of different beliefs.

The lawmaker further disclosed that the Asantehene, during the meeting, called for the National House of Chiefs to be adequately resourced to enable it effectively resolve chieftaincy disputes and promote development.

According to him, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised the need for truth and fairness in resolving disputes across the country.

Mr. Dapaah described it as a privilege to join the committee in paying a courtesy call on the Asantehene and celebrating his 27th anniversary on the Golden Stool.

Nollywood actress, Shine Rosman, has criticised some filmmakers in the Nigerian movie industry for allegedly placing more value on beauty than acting talent when casting actresses.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, Shine claimed that the growing focus on physical appearance is affecting genuine talent in Nollywood.

According to her, many actresses are now undergoing cosmetic surgeries to improve their looks and body shapes because of the pressure to meet industry standards.

‘Majority of Nollywood filmmakers prioritise beauty over talent. There are good directors who regard only talent but to be honest, the majority prefer beauty to talent. That is why you see a lot of movie stars doing surgeries to enhance their bodies,’ she said.

Shine added that beauty has become overly glorified not only in Nollywood but also in Nigerian society, with some people missing out on opportunities because they do not wear makeup or undergo procedures such as Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

She further alleged that some actresses without the required talent are using their physical appearance to secure movie roles.

The actress urged filmmakers and other stakeholders in the industry to focus more on talent in order to protect the future of the Nigerian movie industry.

The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, has described Ghana as a peaceful and stable ‘island’ in ‘unruly waters’ despite growing insecurity in the Sahel and some neighbouring countries.

According to him, the EU remains committed to supporting Ghana to sustain its peace, stability and democratic gains while preventing possible spillover threats from conflict-prone areas within the sub-region.

Mr. Skinnebach said this in an interview with DAILY GUIDE at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, where he delivered a keynote address on scholarship opportunities at European universities.

He noted that Ghana continues to enjoy strong relations with the EU, disclosing that the EU has committed 150 billion euros under its Global Gateway Investment Package for Africa since 2022.

The ambassador stated that the package is aimed at complementing traditional development financing, international financial support and private sector investments across Africa.

He stressed that Ghana must continue to ensure political and macroeconomic stability, maintain a business-friendly environment, improve infrastructure and strengthen its legal framework to attract more European investments.

‘If these are in place, European investors will come. If neighbouring countries offer better conditions, investors will move there instead,’ he indicated.

Mr. Skinnebach disclosed that Ghana has already secured over one billion euros in Global Gateway investments, describing the current period as a favourable one for the country.

He also cited recent high-level engagements between Ghana and the EU, including the signing of the Peace and Security and Defence Partnership by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and Kaja Kallas.

Touching on Ghana’s economy, he commended the country’s peace, democracy and security, but cautioned that sustaining economic stability would require continuous reforms and prudent policies.

According to him, although Ghana’s economy has benefitted from high gold prices, maintaining the current reforms would be crucial, especially as the country approaches future elections.

On democracy, the EU envoy praised Ghana’s consistent democratic elections since 1992, but urged citizens to actively hold leaders accountable and ensure democracy strengthens social cohesion beyond election periods.

Ghanaian Rapper, Medikal, born Samuel Adu Frimpong, has stated that he is among the world’s greatest rappers.

The Sowutuom-born rapper, in a post on X, announced that aside himself and renowned American rapper Lil Wayne, Drake follows as the world’s greatest rapper of all times.

‘Aside myself and Lil Wayne, Drake is the greatest rapper in the world. Damn!’ the post read.

The post, which has since generated over 226.7k views, 11k likes and 639 replies, has generated a mix of reactions from followers, causing a stir among fans.

Kingsleyyyy, on X, pleaded with the artiste not to attempt to overstep his frontiers, as there are many ‘rap gods’ across the continent who lead the rap genre of music. The post read, ‘Idolo this one di3 I beg drop ham Drake? Where Kendrick self dey? You know Eminem? (sic)’

Live Goals also wrote, ‘This is why people don’t take you serious, because how can you tell me ‘mame dokono and mame shito kakra’ makes you a better rapper than juice wrld,50, and yb thems (sic).’

Daniel Anderson listed great rappers excluding Medikal, accusing him of just following trends, he wrote, ‘Adey talk say, this boy be Below Mid aa then you squad dey bark. Drake?! Naa Draaaaaake!!!? Or ein ghost writers? Kanye Kendrick Nas Jack Harlow Kwesi Arthur Keem Sark J Cole Haeven Nigga you just dey follow trend like heat, your music taste be dead like a vampire (sic).’

About 88 properties have so far been classified as unsafe in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.

The structures have been described as liable for demolition or remedial intervention.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) identified 88 structures within the metropolis.

This follows assessments that found them to pose varying levels of structural and public safety risk.

The affected properties include residential facilities, schools, recreational centres and commercial premises, some of which remain occupied by caretakers, squatters and property owners despite the apparent structural deficiencies.

A structural integrity and risk assessment exercise undertaken by the Metropolitan NADMO office revealed extensive defects on several residential, commercial and institutional properties across the metropolis.

The defects included structural cracks, exposed reinforcement bars, deteriorated roofing systems, damaged openings and weakened building components.

Some of the structures are either abandoned or no longer fit for human habitation.

Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan NADMO Director, Alhaji Abubakar Kamal, disclosed that notices have been served on identified property owners in line with the enforcement and public safety responsibilities of the Assembly and NADMO.

‘I must say the identification of these owners has been a challenge. But those we have identified, we have served them notices,’ he stressed.

He explained that while some structures require technical structural integrity assessments to determine their condition, others visibly exhibit severe deterioration that presents an immediate hazard to life and property.

‘Honestly, some of them on the face of what you see may appear dangerous and dilapidated, but we need some integrity tests to confirm what we have seen.

‘So we are now working to ensure that those that need to be demolished we go ahead and do so. Those that can be renovated also we ask the owners of the building to renovate them,’ he added.

He noted that the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), mandates the Metropolitan Assemblies to exercise control over physical development.

‘It also mandates the assemblies to take measures necessary to safeguard public safety, sanitation and orderly development within their jurisdictions,’ he noted.

Those who struggled to have the Criminal Libel Law repealed must be cringing over its subtle return.

We would not mince words in stating that the Criminal Libel Law’s subtle return is part of the reset agenda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. Its application in a garb of finesse by the police and a section of the bench has birthed a sense of foreboding among Ghanaians today. The purpose is to curb the rising frequency of opprobrium against prevailing and verifiable bad governance.

It is so pervasive that most entities such as the clergy, civil society organisations (CSOs) and others have been cowed into seeming submission under the authoritarian rule of the NDC.

Supporting the criminalisation of free speech also is the open licence to NDC serial callers to insult those who express diverse views distasteful to government. These also account for the silence of those who must be speaking against the undemocratic traits being exhibited by the government of the NDC today in the country.

If they were able to speak up yesterday but today unable to do so, it means they have either been compromised as some have really been or apprehensive of the repercussions of expressing divergent views.

Those who love their motherland must not be cowed into submission but must resist the oppressor’s rule.

Recall the number of persons who have already honoured police, Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) and National Security apparatus invitations over expressions deemed to be anti-government and you would have a sense of how things are falling apart.

That we are lamenting the negative state of affairs a little under a year of the assumption of power of the NDC is an indication of how bad things have been and still declining.

To state that democracy is besieged is an understatement given the extent to which the powers of the state are being abused and recklessly so, as though transition is not real.

Many of the state security operatives given their age brackets and their limited access to the country’s history on dictatorship and juntas are unable to understand how their future is being compromised. They are being used as offensive tools in the unfolding dictatorship which would soon leave the scene at the end of its tenure.

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo as the then Attorney General has his name inscribed in the history of the country as the man who led the charge to give democracy an impetus when he expunged the outmoded Criminal Libel Law.

It would be interesting to find out how he is feeling today as free speech is being criminalised in a digitalised setting.

With seeming absolute power at the hands of the President and state security at his disposal, he can afford to have free speech trampled upon in varied forms.

From invitations by the BNI, National Security apparatus, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police Service under a reset agenda, those active on social media have been served sufficient notice that they would be hounded and dealt with when they exercise their right to free speech as permitted by the constitution.

The unholy alliance between the executive, state security agencies and a section of the bench as observed by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in reaction to the bad times, is a reality which must not be ignored if we want to advance the cause of democracy.

That political power is perhaps one of the most transient of all in life should serve as lessons for those who foolishly think that they are invincible and so can abuse power without thinking about the fallouts which are lurking nearby. Life itself is transient, let alone its contents such as political power.

Available in five seasonal colours, the new Delta One amenity kits include destination-inspired bags designed by Italian luxury fashion brand Missoni.

The kits also feature a refreshed self-care collection from long-time beauty partner Grown Alchemist, including the new Hydra-Restore Eye Patches, an onboard exclusive inspired by hydration research and current beauty trends.

‘Every decision behind this refresh was guided by the needs of Delta’s global traveller,’ said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Managing Director of Brand Experience at Delta.

‘From skincare essentials that fit into hydration routines to a limited-edition collection of bags designed to function beautifully beyond the aircraft, our goal was to create lasting reminders of Delta that stay with customers long after their journey,’ he stated.

Delta noted that every aspect of the amenity kit was intentionally designed for reuse beyond a single flight.
