Fourth Annual NFL FLAG National Championship Held In Ghana

The NFL hosted the fourth annual NFL FLAG Championship tournament in Ghana, bringing together top teams from across the country in the 12U Co-Ed and 14U Girls and Boys divisions.

This two-day flag football tournament was held at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra, with Nima 1 taking the top prize in the 12U Co-Ed division, Nima 1 Basic School in the 14U Girls division, and St. Kizito Basic School in the 14U Boys division.

Nima 1, the winning team in the 12U Co-Ed division, will go on to compete in the NFL FLAG Africa Championship in 2026.

Fast-paced and accessible for all, flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports globally, with more than 3.4 million athletes participating in NFL FLAG programming internationally.

NFL FLAG is the official flag football programme of the NFL, bringing the non-contact version of American football to young athletes worldwide. The programming launched in Ghana in 2022 in 10 schools across Accra.

Since then, it has expanded into 30 schools across the country, with Ghanaian teams representing their country at the International NFL FLAG Tournament at the 2024 + 2023 Pro Bowl Games.

‘The annual NFL FLAG National Championship tournament in Ghana has emerged as a stage for top athletes from across the country to showcase their passion for the sport in a competitive and fun environment,’ said Afia Law, NFL FLAG International.

‘It’s been inspiring to see the rapid growth of flag football in Ghana, and we’re excited to build on this momentum by creating more opportunities for youth athletes throughout the region to play this game.’

Flag football’s popularity in Ghana has been spurred by continued support from NFL teams and players. The Philadelphia Eagles, who have marketing rights in Ghana as part of the Global Markets Programme, supported this year’s NFL FLAG Championship tournament and have hosted additional flag activations and NFL game watch parties in markets across the country.

In addition, Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Brian Asamoah, who is of Ghanaian heritage, has been a key ambassador in growing flag football throughout the country.

Last summer, Asamoah convened a group of NFL players and legends to host a flag football camp and ‘scouting combine’ in Ghana for local athletes to showcase their talents in front of evaluators responsible for determining who will represent Ghana’s national flag football team at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Asamoah continues to be heavily involved in NFL FLAG programming in Ghana, including through his support of a youth flag football league in the country.

Earlier this year, the NFL and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) hosted a flag football coach education and officiating clinic in Ghana.

The clinic welcomed coaches and officials from 10 African countries, as well as leaders from the global flag football community, providing participants with both classroom and on-field learning to help accelerate the development and growth of the game across the country and continent.

GTEC To Order Universities From Increasing Fees – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to issue instructions to all public universities to stop any unauthorised increase in tuition fees.

This follows reports that some universities have indiscriminately raised their tuition fees after the government announced the ‘No Fees Stress Policy,’ which is expected to provide free tertiary education for first year students and persons with disabilities.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, the minister expressed concerns over the exploitation of the new policy by some institutions to impose unjustified fees on students.

He said, ‘I have seen some schools increasing their fees because the government said it is absorbing them. We will not accept that. So make sure you issue consequential instructions to schools not to take advantage of that.’

‘Believe me, my most impactful launch as a minister was when the No Free Stress Policy was launched, I had a good sleep because this was an impactful social intervention of the President,’ he pointed out.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure non discriminatory access to tertiary education, stating that institutions must align with the administration’s goal of easing the financial burden on students and families.

He further disclosed that the ministry is reviewing the policy that mandates the closure of private universities that fail to obtain a presidential charter within 10 years of establishment, stressing that the review is in response to appeals from some private institutions that have requested additional time to fully prepare for independent operation.

EOCO Dismisses Springfield CEO Arrest

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has refuted claims circulating on an online news platform, Novareport, alleging that Kevin Okyere, Chief Executive Officer of Springfield Energy, has been arrested or detained in Dubai over a petition purportedly linked to the anti-graft body.

In a statement issued on November 2, 2025, EOCO described the publication as false and misleading, explaining that the Office has not ordered the arrest of Mr. Okyere and has not failed to act on any petition involving Springfield Energy.

According to EOCO, there are currently two active investigations concerning the company – one arising from a petition against Springfield Energy and the other relating to what it described as an ‘explosive’ case between the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) and Springfield Energy.

The Office stressed that its investigative procedures prioritise evidence gathering before any arrests are made.

‘It is the policy directive of the leadership of EOCO that investigations must precede arrest and not the reverse,’ the statement read.

EOCO further noted that the matter involving BOST is of strategic significance due to its potential impact on the state entity’s finances and the broader domestic economy.

While reiterating its long-standing position not to comment publicly on active investigations, EOCO expressed concern that Novareport failed to seek clarification before publishing the claims.

The Office urged the public to disregard the report and assured stakeholders of its continued commitment to tackling economic and organised crime in Ghana.

‘EOCO is actively working on not one, but two investigations involving Springfield Energy,’ the statement added, emphasising the institution’s resolve to pursue due process in the interest of accountability and public confidence.

Growth Investment Partners, mPharma Expand Access To Affordable Healthcare

Growth Investment Partners (GIP) Ghana Ltd, an investment platform established by British International Investment (BII), has announced a strategic investment in mPharma Ghana Ltd, a patient-centred and technology-driven healthcare company improving access to affordable medicines across Africa.

GIP’s investment will enable mPharma to optimise inventory in its existing mutti pharmacy network across Ghana and Francophone West Africa (FWA), while also expanding its franchise model – QualityRx – to new markets in the West African region and supporting local pharmacy owners to expand access to affordable, community-based healthcare in Togo and Benin.

The expansion reflects mPharma’s focus on strengthening its footprint in Francophone West Africa, where stable operating environments and strong regional demand for quality pharmaceutical services present significant opportunities for growth.

Chief Executive and Investment Officer of GIP Ghana, Jacob Kholi, said, ‘Our focus remains on supporting high-impact businesses that improve essential services for everyday people. Strengthening mPharma’s footprint in Francophone West Africa will help more communities access affordable medicines while reinforcing the resilience of regional healthcare systems.’

Founded in 2013, mPharma has grown into one of Africa’s most innovative healthcare providers, addressing the persistent challenge of limited access to affordable medicines. Through its mutti pharmacy network and complementary services such as mutti Doctor, a virtual consultation and community screening service, mPharma provides timely access to licensed doctors, reduces patient wait times from hours to minutes, and promotes early detection and management of chronic conditions.

The company’s franchise model offers pharmacy owners a multi-year partnership that has enabled mPharma to build a broad pharmacy network that brings affordable care closer to communities, converting independent community pharmacies into trusted primary healthcare access points under the mutti brand.

Chief Executive Officer of mPharma, Kwesi Arhin, commented, ‘Access to affordable medicines remains one of the most critical healthcare challenges across the region. With GIP’s support, we can continue to strengthen our partnerships with pharmacies and healthcare providers to enhance patient care and ensure equitable access to quality medicines across Ghana, Francophone West Africa, and the wider Sub-Saharan region.’

BII Country Director, Ghana, Kwabena Asante-Poku, added, ‘We are proud to deepen our support for mPharma through GIP’s investment. BII has been an investor in mPharma for several years, and we have seen firsthand the company’s impact in improving access to affordable medicines and healthcare across Africa. This new partnership will help accelerate mPharma’s expansion in Francophone West Africa, strengthening health systems and delivering essential services to more communities.’

mPharma’s impact is already visible. Its mutti membership programme has grown from fewer than 10,000 members in 2019 to more than 400,000 at the end of 2024 across Africa. Over 70% of patients report lower drug prices at mutti pharmacies, while more than 75% of members report no stock outs of essential medicines.

The company’s healthcare initiatives also include targeted programmes for chronic disease management, women’s health, and children’s healthcare. Its Diabetes Test and Treat programme has achieved optimal blood sugar control in 80% of patients within six months, while partnerships with leading pharmaceutical firms such as Pfizer have provided up to 65% discounts on life-saving medications.

Through this partnership, mPharma will continue to drive innovation, improve medicine affordability, and strengthen health systems across West Africa.

Galamsey Chaos At Hwidiem

Galamsey operators have become so emboldened that the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce no longer constitute a threat to their destructive enterprise.

November opened up with a story about galamseyers reacting to an arrest of their members near Hwidiem.

Not satisfied with the action of the law, they descended upon the Hwidiem Police Station to demand the release of the detained suspects.

Soldiers, including a Colonel, sought refuge at the police station as the galamseyers bayed for their blood.

Eventually, the demands of the illegal miners were met somewhat, which shows how powerful they have become of late.

Under the current political dispensation, illegal miners can do as they wish. As for the occasional highly publicised arrests of illegal miners, they are part of what Ghanaian youth term ‘settings’- for the optics.

What happened at Hwidiem where galamseyers as it were overrun a police station is a dangerous precedent which could be replicated.

Galamsey and its accompanying fallouts are here for a long haul. What could possibly have happened had the police resisted the chaos deliberately caused by the galamseyers who reportedly destroyed public property?

The police must be commended for conducting themselves the way they did, since after all the high class galamseyers who stormed their station were above the law.

In an Animal Farm setting such as ours, four legs are good but two are bad.

A certain judge said so about the country’s ambience.

We should not be surprised when one day we hear about a dangerous clash between so called illegal miners and state agents. With top ruling party activists knee-deep in the galamsey mess, the aforementioned scenario is highly possible.

Indeed, even the report under review was dangerous enough to warrant national attention although there was no fatality. What it means is that we are descending very fast into the abyss of daring lawlessness, the product of which is anybody’s guess.

Must we wait till we find ourselves in the pit of hell before we take action?

What we are being treated to is anything but sincere, especially since we don’t know the contents of the orders given to the so-called taskforce to arrest the situation. For now, it would appear that they are highly restricted in what they can do. Thus leaves the daring illegal miners emboldened by the day.

With nobody arrested and no possible prosecution, the police station is no longer the place to detain galamsey suspects. Not Hwidiem, we can bet because when suspects are sent there, hoodlums will run riot there demanding immediate release of their colleagues and chiefs will come and beg the illegal miners who give them cash to let go their grip.

Call it the dictatorship of galamseyers and you would be on track.

We do not see any urge on the part of those charged with dealing with galamsey to go beyond ordinary patrols and returning to base with occasional seizure of shovels and pick axes.

With the names of some government appointees engaged in galamsey now in the public domain, we are yet to see any action against them.

The influential persons in the Hwidiem community who intervened when the soldiers were taken hostage know those behind the nonsense. If there is sincere urge to track them and bring them to book, they should be located and invited to assist the police to do what is expected of them under such circumstances.

MP Invited Over NIAMOS Taskforce Assault

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been invited by police to assist investigations into an alleged attack on officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during an anti-galamsey operation in the Ahafo Region on Saturday.

The invitation follows a violent confrontation on November 1, 2025, when the NAIMOS Director of Operations, accompanied by ten soldiers, conducted a reconnaissance mission to establish a permanent taskforce base in the region.

During the exercise along the Goaso-Hwidiem road, the team reportedly spotted an excavator mining near Bronikrom and moved in, arresting several individuals and ordering them to refill excavated pits to prevent environmental damage.

Shortly after, three men arrived at the scene with one claiming to be a Defence Intelligence officer, another identified only as Alex who asserted ownership of the site, and a third who drove a Range Rover. A search of their vehicles reportedly uncovered a Smith and Wesson pistol, two magazines, 21 rounds of 9mm ammunition, GHS11,000 cash, 12 mobile phones and other items. All three were arrested, and makeshift structures on the site were set ablaze.

According to reports, while the suspects were being prepared for transport to the Hwidiem Police Station, the Asutifi North MP allegedly arrived with a group of men and demanded the immediate release of what he described as ‘kingpins,’ including a Burkinabe national.

When the NAIMOS commander declined, the group reportedly turned violent, seized handcuff keys from a soldier and freed the suspects before pursuing the taskforce to the police station.

A crowd of about 600 people later gathered at the Hwidiem Police Station, threatening to ‘discipline’ the soldiers and demanding the release of the suspects and their vehicles.

The pickup belonging to the NAIMOS Director was vandalised, and threats were reportedly made to burn the station.

Senior police officers and the Zongo Chief of Hwidiem, Alhaji Mohammed Bashiru Zarikyi, intervened to calm tensions and escort the NAIMOS team to safety, though the chief’s vehicle was damaged in the process.

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters to take over the case.

Exhibits retrieved from the scene include the pistol, ammunition, unregistered vehicles and multiple phones, while a special operation is underway to arrest those involved.

Mr. Addo has denied orchestrating the attack, stating that he went to the scene at the request of Asutifi South MP, Collins Dauda, only to help de-escalate tensions. He insists he did not interfere with the operation, but police say he will assist with inquiries into allegations of incitement and obstruction of the NAIMOS team.

Ghana will compete in both the boys’ and girls’ categories of the upcoming CAF African Schools Football Championship WAFU-B Qualifiers, scheduled to take place from November 29 to December 4, 2025, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the championship brings together the finest young football talents from schools across West Africa, as they battle for qualification to the continental finals.

The WAFU-B Zone features some of the region’s football powerhouses, including Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Niger, and hosts Burkina Faso, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive and exciting tournament.

Ghana enters this year’s qualifiers with renewed confidence, following a stellar performance in the previous edition.

The Ghanaian teams emerged as WAFU-B zonal champions before excelling on the continental stage – the girls’ team clinched the main title at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, while the boys’ team finished in third place.

With preparations underway, expectations are high that Ghana will once again showcase its youth football strength and secure qualification for the continental finals.

The CAF African Schools Football Championship forms part of CAF’s broader commitment to promoting grassroots football development across the continent, nurturing future stars and enhancing the sport’s growth from the school level.

Volta Region Key To 24-Hour Vision – NDPC

The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has identified the Volta Region as a key pillar in the government’s ambitious 24-Hour Economy agenda, positioning it as a strategic hub for trade, logistics, manufacturing, and tourism to operate seamlessly around the clock.

Speaking at the maiden Volta Economic Forum, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, Commissioner of the NDPC, described the region as a ‘Corridor of Possibility’ with immense potential to drive inclusive and sustainable economic growth through continuous productivity.

He noted that the Volta Corridor’s strategic geographic advantages, including access to the Eastern Corridor road network, Lake Volta transport system, and the Aflao border, make it a natural logistics and investment gateway linking Ghana to the wider ECOWAS market.

According to him, the region’s diverse resource base in agro-processing, aquaculture, salt mining, and tourism provides a solid foundation for a vibrant 24-hour economic model.

Dr. Apetorgbor outlined agro-processing and food systems; blue economy and coastal value-addition; tourism and cultural economy; light manufacturing and ICT/BPO; and logistics and border trade as the key investment pillars driving the vision.

He disclosed that these sectors collectively present investment opportunities ranging between GHS12 million and GHS95 million, supported by strong local backing and credible off-take prospects.

To facilitate smooth investor participation, he said a One-Stop Investor Desk has been established by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and other agencies.

He noted that the desk would streamline land validation, permitting, and utility access to ease the investment process.

According to Dr. Apetorgbor, Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and blended-finance models will underpin key projects, with measures in place to ensure environmental sustainability, land security, and climate resilience. He emphasized that the initiative is deeply inclusive, promoting local content participation, gender-responsive procurement, youth employment, and equitable growth.

‘The Volta Corridor is ready for business,’ he declared, urging investors to co-create, commit, and champion viable projects within 90 days.

He highlighted the region’s readiness, strong institutional coordination, and the availability of bankable projects that guarantee both social impact and financial returns.

He added that the Volta Corridor is not merely a regional plan but the Launchpad for Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy take-off, an economy that never sleeps, one that continuously creates jobs, drives exports, and sustains national prosperity.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has pledged to cover the medical expenses of any supporters caught up in a mass stabbing incident on a train travelling from Doncaster to London on Saturday evening.
