EPA Bans Fabrication, Sale Of ‘Chanfang’ Machines

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has with immediate effect ban the fabrication, importation, sale, and use of ‘Changfan’ machines in the country.

While the EPA acknowledged the fabrication and sale of the machines have provided income for some individuals, it indicated that their use in river mining has led to widespread pollution of water bodies, siltation of riverbeds, and destruction of aquatic life.

‘In exercise of the powers conferred on the Environmental Protection Authority under sections 3(2)(b) and 35 of the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124). the following directive is hereby issued,’ the statement said.

The directive prohibits the fabrication, importation, sale, and use of ‘Chanfang’ machines in the country, citing serious risks to the environment and public health.

EPA also warned that any workshops or shops found producing or selling ‘Chanfang’ machines without a permit will be shut down immediately.

‘All existing equipment will be seized and dismantled. The EPA has directed individuals, workshops, and establishments involved in the fabrication, importation, sale, or distribution of ‘Chanfan’ machines to cease operations with immediate effect’ part of the statement read.

The Authority also issued a final warning to individuals, groups, and companies engaged in mining within water bodies to stop such illegal activities immediately as these actions are serious violations of national environmental and mining regulations.

Volta Region To Host 41st National Farmers’ Day

The Volta Region will host the 41st edition of the National Farmers Day celebration, scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2025, under the theme, ‘Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.’

The announcement was made by the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, during a press soiree in Ho.

He described the selection as an honour and opportunity for the region to highlight its vast agricultural potential and rich cultural heritage.

Gunu stated that the annual celebration remains a crucial platform for recognising the hard work and contributions of farmers and fishermen toward national food security, economic growth, and sustainable development.

‘This is a proud moment for the Volta Region as we are blessed with fertile land and dedicated farmers, and hosting this year’s celebration gives us the chance to display our agricultural strength to the entire nation,’ he said.

The Regional Minister called on traditional authorities, farmer associations, private sector stakeholders, and residents to actively support and participate in the event, which will be held alongside the Volta Trade Fair.

The fair will feature local products, innovative technologies, and agribusiness opportunities aimed at promoting regional economic growth.

Let’s Believe In The Cedi – BoG Governor

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged Ghanaians to recommit themselves to ensure that the Cedi continues to serve as a symbol not only of ‘our past, but of our preparedness for the future’ as the country honours the Cedi’s 60-year journey.

‘Let us remember, a currency does not stand strong because it is printed on sturdy paper or minted from polished metal. It stands strong because the people who use it believe in it,’ he said.

Speaking at the Cedi@60 anniversary launch in Accra, stated that such a belief is earned through prudent policy, institutional integrity and shared responsibility rather than assumption.

The governor also explained that the cedi is far more than a currency, as it is a trusted store of value, a driver of economic activity, and a daily emblem of collective confidence.

‘Whether exchanged in bustling markets, disbursed as salaries, or saved for future dreams, the Cedi stands as a lasting symbol of our journey and our unyielding commitment to shape our own destiny,’ he said.

Reflecting on some recent economic events, Dr. Asiama stated that, Ghana, like many other nations, has had to navigate some of the most complex economic storms in a generation from the lingering effects of the global pandemic, through economic crises, debt exchange, and tightening global financial conditions.

He said the economic fabric of the country was tested with the Cedi depreciating over 50% by becoming the World’s worst performing currency in the world while headline inflation spiraled to 54.1% and food inflation soared to an alarming 59.7% year-on-year in December 2022, distorting household budgets, shrinking incomes, and feeding public anxiety.

The Governor added that such gains are not merely accident but as a result of ‘hard, sometimes unpopular, but principled decisions: fiscal consolidation by government, a tight monetary policy stance by the Bank of Ghana, and renewed confidence from the investor community and the Ghanaian public.’

‘And so today, as we celebrate 60 years of the Cedi, we do so not out of nostalgia, but from a place of hard-won stability and cautious optimism,’ he said.

He, however, stated that despite the successes chalked, the work of central bank has been more complex especially in environment that is radically different with global markets moving in milliseconds.

Dr. Asaima further noted that the Bank of Ghana has also modernised its supervisory processes, strengthened foreign exchange operations, enhanced payments infrastructure, and deepened its commitment to monetary policy issues.

According to the Governor, over the next 12 months, the Central Bank will embark on a nationwide and inclusive programme of activities, including Currency exhibitions that tell the story of Ghana’s monetary journey, from pounds to pesewas, from coins to QR codes.

It will also hold Public lectures and school tours to engage students, professionals, and communities on the importance of monetary sovereignty, diaspora engagements, highlighting the role of remittances and international trust in supporting the Cedi’s strength.

Okro Mouth Brouhaha

The President is not happy about how some of his appointees announce government policies without Cabinet approval.

The anomaly is said to have embarrassed government for sometime now and given the gratis ammo this gives to opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to deal avoidable yet punchy blows to the NDC, the recent warning to the okro mouth ministers is understandable.

Why would ministers for that matter announce critical policy developments when these have not been concluded at Cabinet level?

Is there not in place procedures for such announcements to obviate such embarrassing outcomes?

Whatever the answers to the foregone are, they indicate procedural deficiencies in governance, something which calls for a reset.

The lack of coherence and coordination in the management of government business as being observed is a major defect.

Such drawback at the highest echelon of governance is regrettable, and it is our hope that appropriate efforts would be put in place to reverse the anomaly.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah had led a Minority in Parliament charge for policy disclosures which had not received the scrutiny of the legislature. This, he said, has robbed Parliament of its supervisory and oversight roles.

Following the warning to ministers and appointees about unauthorised announcements, observers tried to put pieces together in their efforts to find out what the immediate cause of the reaction was. It was a warning which came on the heels of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu’s policy announcement of a mother tongue project.

The disclosure prompted a national conversation about the project which, as he put it, would be restricted to the formative years of schooling.

While the subject is not new having undergone policy alterations since independence, the minister’s blunder was that he allotted a timing for the adoption of the project.

That kids will better understand subjects such as science and mathematics when they are taught in their mother tongues is something research is said to have supported.

The challenges in implementing such a policy are however too enormous and make an immediate adoption not unwise.

Be it as it may, a roadmap and what it will take to make it feasible should be discussed without delay if a future consideration is on the table.

Some mother tongues such as Ga among others are suffering from dearth of instructors, deficiency which would take long to address.

Rendering existing textbooks especially into the mother tongues is a herculean task which cannot be surmounted overnight.

We think that government’s warning to ministers and appointees coming immediately after the Education Minister’s announcement at Mawuli Senior High School in the Volta Region could have been managed without embarrassing him.

Former Head of Public Affairs at Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Fiifi Boafo, has stressed the need for Ghanaians to embrace their diverse cultural heritage.

‘Our culture is a treasure; it reflects who we are and guides us toward a brighter future’. It allows us to connect with our identity and celebrate the beauty of our traditions’, he stated.

He said festivals which are crucial part of the Ghanaian culture always present an opportunity for drawing visitors and creating opportunities.

Mr. Boafo was speaking at the Apa festival of the Chief and people of Kyekyewere in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.

‘This festival is not just a marking of our harvest; it is a vibrant expression of our identity, our traditions, and our enduring spirit as a people’.

He praised the Chief of Kyekyewere, Nana Asaa Kofi III for his vision and development agenda, adding that the chief’s leadership style inspires the people to embrace their heritage and uplift their community.

Brong Ahafo Region produced a commanding performance to defeat Western Region 4-1 in their final Group A fixture of the MTN Elite U19 Championship on Wednesday morning at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The emphatic win keeps Brong Ahafo firmly in contention for a semi-final spot, pending the results of the remaining group matches.

Western Region drew first blood in the 4th minute when Ahmed Yankey finished off a brilliant solo run to give his side an early lead. However, Brong Ahafo quickly regained control, with Dankwah Bismark equalising in the 22nd minute to set up a thrilling contest.

After the break, Gideon Otabil – the talented left-footer who later deservedly earned the Player of the Match award – fired Brong Ahafo ahead in the 57th minute with a composed strike.

The team’s momentum continued as Mohammed Hafiz extended the lead ten minutes later, before Lord Quansah’s unfortunate own goal from an Otabil cross sealed a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Brong Ahafo.

The result lifts Brong Ahafo to nine points from four matches, level with Eastern Region at the top of Group A. However, their qualification to the semi-finals will hinge on the outcome of the final group games, with Northern Region – on six points with a game in hand – still in the running.

In Group B, Central Region will face Upper East in their final group fixture, while Greater Accra and Ashanti Region remain well-placed to secure spots in the knockout stage following impressive campaigns.

Running from October 23 to November 2, 2025, the MTN Elite U19 Championship features ten regional teams from across Ghana.

The competition serves as a vital platform for the country’s most promising young footballers to showcase their talents, gain valuable experience, and catch the eye of national team selectors and professional scouts.
