Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been unanimously elected as Chairperson of the Africa Geopolitical Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), further solidifying his status as a leading figure in continental and global parliamentary affairs.

The election took place on October 19, 2025, at the ongoing 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, where delegates from 52 African member states endorsed Speaker Bagbin’s leadership. His assumption of the prestigious role marks a significant diplomatic milestone for Ghana, positioning the country at the forefront of international parliamentary cooperation.

In his new capacity, Speaker Bagbin will coordinate Africa’s common positions on key IPU matters, ensuring the continent speaks with one voice on issues of governance, peace, security, and sustainable development. He will also act as the chief advocate for African parliaments within the IPU, promoting the region’s priorities on the global stage.

Expressing appreciation for the confidence reposed in him, Speaker Bagbin thanked all African delegations for their unity and participation in the Assembly. He paid special tribute to the Nigerian delegation for seconding his nomination and lauded the Senegalese delegation for withdrawing its candidate in a gesture of solidarity and consensus building.

The Speaker outlined his vision to foster transparency, strengthen legislative institutions, and deepen democratic governance across Africa. ‘Our collective progress depends on cooperation, integrity, and the shared pursuit of sustainable development,’ he stated.

Speaker Bagbin currently serves as President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), and is a former Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International.

He takes over from Ms. Angela Thokozile Didiza, Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly, who was commended for her exemplary leadership during her tenure.

The IPU Africa Geopolitical Group, formed in the early 1950s, works to ensure equitable continental representation in IPU structures and to harmonise African perspectives on key parliamentary issues.

Speaker Bagbin’s election is being hailed as a testament to Ghana’s growing influence in international parliamentary diplomacy and governance leadership.

The headmaster of Prevailing Academy at Supom Dunkwa in the Shama District of the Western Region is in the grips of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service for allegedly impregnating his former student.

The headmaster, Isaac Okyere, is accused of impregnating the 17-year-old Junior High School (JHS) graduate.

It was gathered that after the alleged offence, the headmaster allegedly facilitated the abortion of the pregnancy.

It was also revealed that the headmaster, popularly called ‘Sir Ike’, tried to cover up the incident by convincing a male former student, Patrick Gyebi, to claim responsibility for the pregnancy.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that even though the boy initially agreed to accept the deal, he later rescinded his decision.

Speaking to journalists, the 17-year-old girl said last Saturday, she was not feeling well and therefore informed her mother.

‘My mother gave me money to go to the hospital. I was taken through a pregnancy test and it was positive,’ she disclosed.

She added, ‘I went straight to Sir Ike’s house and informed him. He then took me to a pharmacy shop in Takoradi and asked me to wait somewhere.’

She indicated that the headmaster later came out and took her back to his house.

‘There he gave me some drugs to swallow and insert some into my private part. He then told me to go home and not to inform my mother of what happened,’ she narrated.

The girl disclosed that her mother was furious when she got home.

‘I could not talk and my mother realised there was something wrong. She asked me and I could not tell her.

‘Later, my elder sister pulled me and asked me to confide in her. It was then that I told her that I was pregnant and had attempted to abort it.

‘They took me to another hospital where it was detected that not all the foetus came out when I attempted to abort the pregnancy.

‘I was later given some drugs, and all that remained in my womb came out. I then narrated all that happened to my mother,’ she stated.

The case was reported to officials of DOVVSU, who arrested the headmaster, and are currently investigating the matter.

The mother of the victim, Hawah Nyarko, expressed her disappointment at the headmaster’s actions, and warned that he would be held responsible if something bad happens to her daughter.

Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician, Madam Gloria Ampofo, is set to launch her fifth studio album on Friday, October 25, 2025, at the Mount Zion Methodist Church in Sakumono.

The new album, titled ‘Aseda’-which translates to Thanksgiving-is both a heartfelt expression of gratitude to God and a celebration of the artiste’s 70th birthday.

Speaking to Daily Guide ahead of the launch, Madam Ampofo, an alumna of St. Roses Senior High School, shared that the album is a collection of songs meant to uplift hearts and honour God’s unwavering goodness.

‘God has been so good to me for the past 70 years. I feel younger, stronger, and I can’t stop thanking Him,’ she said joyfully. ‘I want to use this milestone to share songs that reflect His mercy, healing, and love.’

Madam Ampofo’s musical journey began in 2014 with her debut album of Christmas carols. Since then, she has composed several notable songs, including those celebrating Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary and a special track for the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Her dedication to gospel music earned her recognition from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) in 2024, honoring her contributions to the industry.

Now, with five albums and seven decades of life, Madam Ampofo says her latest project seeks to bring healing, joy, peace of mind, and spiritual renewal to all who listen.

Among the inspiring tracks featured on the new album are ‘I Love You Jesus,’ ‘Njomo Da Fee Fee’ (in Ga), and ‘Awurade Y? Ma Me Daa,’ among others.

The upcoming album launch is expected to draw music lovers, industry stakeholders, and church members alike, as the veteran artiste continues to inspire generations with her faith and music.

Hisense Ghana has extended its footprint beyond the electronics market into the field of public health with the donation of two state-of-the-art Hisense H60 Ultrasound Diagnostic Systems to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi and the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

The initiative, announced this week, marks the latest in a series of contributions by the global technology giant aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare delivery system and improving access to advanced diagnostic services.

Acting Managing Director, Dinah De-graft Quaye, said the donation will enhance diagnostic capacity in two of the country’s busiest teaching hospitals, where thousands of patients rely on ultrasound scans for early detection and treatment planning.

In resource-constrained settings like Ghana, ultrasound serves as the primary non-invasive diagnostic tool for an estimated 70 percent of initial obstetric and gynaecological assessments and is critical for diagnosing conditions ranging from abdominal disorders to heart disease.

According to her, the H60 Ultrasound Diagnostic System combines cutting-edge image processing with a user-friendly interface to deliver exceptional imaging clarity.

This, Dinah stated, ensures faster and more accurate diagnoses, an essential factor in improving patient outcomes in emergency, paediatric, and critical care units.

Globally, Hisense’s medical imaging systems are already in use across more than 20 top-tier hospitals in China, where they have supported over 50,000 complex diagnostic cases and earned strong clinical endorsements from leading medical professionals.

Dinah described the donation as ‘a continuation of the company’s long-term commitment to supporting Ghana’s public health system through technology-driven interventions.’

This is not the first time the electronics brand has contributed to healthcare in Ghana.

In August 2020, Hisense Ghana donated two fully equipped ambulances, valued at $90,000, to the Apinto Government Hospital and the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital.

That same year, it made its first ultrasound donation to the Tarkwa facility.

In 2023, the company provided an advanced ultrasound diagnostic system worth over $50,000 to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), supporting the training of future medical professionals.

With the introduction of the H60 systems, Hisense Ghana says it hopes to not only boost clinical efficiency but also strengthen the partnership between the private sector and public healthcare institutions.

‘Our goal is to ensure that technology serves humanity,’ the company said in a statement.

‘By equipping Ghana’s leading hospitals with world-class medical equipment, we are contributing to better health outcomes for all,’ Dinah De-graft Quaye intimated.

American actress and activist, Gabrielle Union, has opened up about a deeply emotional and spiritual experience during her visit to Cape Coast Castle in Ghana, describing it as both ‘heartbreaking and healing.’

Speaking on the YouTube series Reclaiming with Monica, Union said she felt a powerful ancestral connection while touring the 17th -century slave fortress, which once held thousands of Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic during the slave trade.

‘Standing inside those walls, I could feel the spirits of my ancestors – their pain, their strength, their endurance. It was heartbreaking and healing at the same time,’ she said.

Union recalled a particularly intense moment when her mother collapsed while walking toward the nearby ‘River of No Return,’ where enslaved Africans were washed before being taken onto ships.

‘We were going to the river, and during the walk, my mum fell out. I thought she was gone, but very clearly, I heard my grandmother’s voice – who had been gone for many years – say to me, ‘She’s alright,” Union recounted.

Her mother later regained consciousness and insisted on completing the journey. ‘She was like, ‘Take me to the river.’ We weren’t at the river yet, but I was just crying,’ Union added.

While at the river, Union said her husband, basketball star Dwyane Wade, also had a spiritual moment. ‘I had lost track of where he was, and suddenly I heard him scream. It was a bright, hot, sunny day, but the moment he screamed, the sky opened up and a downpour started. It felt like we were being cleansed.’

Cape Coast Castle, built by European traders in the 17th century, remains one of the most significant relics of the transatlantic slave trade. Union’s emotional journey reflects a growing movement among African Americans seeking to reconnect with their ancestral roots in Ghana – a pilgrimage that gained momentum with the country’s ‘Year of Return’ initiative in 2019.

This piece isn’t intended to blame any government or political party. It is intended to help increase awareness of kidney damage risks which keep increasing in Ghana.

I learnt of this risk in about 1990 in Obuasi when Anglogold (Ashanti Goldfields) installed its globally acclaimed innovative sulphur treatment plant (the STP – BIOX) which uses bacteria to remove sulphur compounds (pollutants) from water as part of its gold recovery process.

My cousin was the Mechanical Engineer in charge of running the plant. I was then a BSc Mathematics undergrad at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

When he took me on a visit to the plant, he told me of the risks of excessive poisons which the mining industry is unleashing into our environment and warned that Ghana shouldn’t allow individuals to do mining because they cannot safely handle these deadly pollutants in the same way Ashanti Goldfields was doing by investing in the expensive sulphur treatment plant.

Directly, he mentioned kidney damage risks associated with the chemicals used in recovering gold. – the compounds of cyanides, mercury, arsenic, etc. Being a science student then, I understood and appreciated the explanations he gave me.

So over the past 35 years, I have keenly observed the kidney damage risks unfold. For example, availability of dialysis machines in our hospitals hasn’t been a mainstream news until recent times.

Unfortunately, my cousin himself, then a Mechanical Engineer and who later became Contracts Manager for Anglogold Ashanti after studying law, died of kidney failure and I have had a reduced kidney function from my last test.

His words to me when he discovered he had kidney damage was ‘Taywee, I’ve been hit’. Yes, he calls me Taywee, short form for Tawiah. After saying to me he has been hit, my question to him was ‘Hit by what?’. He said ‘I have been hit by kidney damage and you know I’ve been talking about this risk for a long time.

This conversation took place in his office in Accra. He was then the Executive Secretary for Ghana Institution of Engineers. Since then, I have been interested and observing kidney related news and it keeps becoming alarming. At this stage, the question will remain ‘who will act to save the people of Ghana from the increasing risks of kidney diseases?’

Amongst friends, I have told this kidney disease risks story for 35 years ever since my cousin educated me about it but I think the time is right to tell it publicly to increase awareness. May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace.

RESIDENTS OF Atasemanso in the Nhyiaeso Constituency in Kumasi are reported to be living in fear as armed robbers have been terrorising them, lately.

According to reports reaching the paper, these hoodlums, who come from different parts of Kumasi, usually move with unregistered motorbikes and rob their victims at gun-point.

The suspected robbers, who are virtually having a field’s day in the vast community, usually target people who walk in isolation in quiet and dark places.

These criminals operate morning and evening shifts. In the morning, they start their illegal operations from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The evening shift starts from 7 p.m.

Numerous people in Atasemanso, notably women who go to the market early in morning to trade, are said to have fallen victims to these hoodlums, who are operating freely now.

According to information available to the paper, the criminals have in the last few days extended their operations to Paraku Estate and Nhyiaeso, all in the Nhyiaeso Constituency.

A man, who gave his name only as Kofi, a resident of Paraku Estate, sadly, said that ‘we can no longer go to work early in the morning because of the presence of these criminals.

‘A lot of people have lost their money, mobile phones and other valuables to these criminals, who are young and energetic. We are all afraid to step out early in the morning.’

Kofi also disclosed that the criminals intensify their illegal operations in the area in the evening from 7 p.m. when there is total darkness, noting that they are now living in fear.

He said what surprises him most is the fact that nobody seemed to care about what is going on even though Paraku Estate, Atasemanso and Nhyiaeso are rich communities.

‘All the top traditional leaders, big time politicians, including former presidents, Members of Parliament (MPs) and business moguls in Kumasi live in these nice communities.

‘But, strangely, the robbers are operating freely without anyone preventing them,’ he openly lamented, adding that the police in the city are not working as expected of them.

Kofi passionately appealed to the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), especially the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to come to their aid.

‘The police in the region have virtually abandoned us, as the hoodlums have been tormenting us, so the Regional Minister, who is the head of REGSEC, is now only hope,’ he stated.

A 57-year-old man has committed suicide after his wife threatened to divorce him.

The unfortunate incident happened at Oheamadwen in the Shama District of the Western Region, last Thursday.

The man, Agya Badu, also known as ‘Express’, initially attacked his wife with a machete before allegedly killing himself.

According to information gathered, the deceased had some issues with his wife, who had reportedly informed him of her decision to end the marriage.

The woman’s decision did not go down well with the man, who confronted the woman and verbally assaulted her, last Monday.

The wife later reported the confrontation to the police and later summoned him before the chiefs and elders of the community.

The husband, who worked as a security guard, was therefore avoiding home for fear of being arrested.

However, last Thursday evening, after closing from work, he returned and launched another attack on the woman, this time with a machete.

The wife got severely injured and was admitted at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for treatment.

It was gathered that after the attack, the man left home and committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree in the community.

The case was reported to the police, who conveyed the lifeless body of the deceased to the hospital morgue. The police have since commenced investigations into the case.

Meanwhile, DAILY GUIDE learnt that the condition of the wife remains critical as she receives treatment.

Assembly Member for the area, Owu Ewie, who confirmed the incident, said the husband had issues with his wife.

‘He worked as a security guard in a company so after closing from his shift, he came home on Thursday evening and attacked his wife with a machete. The intention was ending his wife’s life, but that did not materialise, and he later killed himself,’ the assembly man revealed.

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels has been trending after a distressing video of her went viral on social media on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

In the clip, Regina is surrounded by people amid a tense commotion and can be heard saying she ‘can no longer stand the violence.’

The short footage, widely shared on X and Instagram, shows Regina panting and upset as bystanders try to calm her. She tells those around her: ‘In Ned Nwoko’s house, I am nothing, but in my own house, I am a queen. Not again. I can’t stand the violence, it’s too much.’

At one point men who appear ready to intervene are visible, and one man is seen carrying a stick, suggesting a heated confrontation.

The video prompted an angry public response from Regina’s’ brother, Ojeogwu Samuel Danhillman (Sammy West), who posted on Instagram alleging that Senator Ned Nwoko had physically assaulted his sister and even ‘smashed her head on the wall,’ and accused the senator of sending thugs.

Sammy West vowed to defend his sister and threatened retaliation in several posts.

News outlets and social feeds reporting the viral footage say the immediate cause of the disturbance is not publicly confirmed.

Multiple reports note that no formal police statement or public legal filing has been released so far.

Senator Nwoko Speaks

Responding to the incident in a lengthy post and a short video shared on his Instagram handle #princenednwoko on Sunday, Nwoko claimed the actress was battling drug and alcohol abuse, which he said was at the root of the crisis rocking their marriage.

‘Regina was not always like this. Her current battle with drugs and alcohol abuse is the root of our problem.

‘She must continue her rehabilitation programme, or I fear for her life and safety,’ he wrote.

The senator alleged that Regina went on a violent rampage at their home in his absence, attacking staff and destroying property.

‘She slapped and hit three staff in the past 48 hours and destroyed property, including cars and windows, for no just cause.

‘Now she has moved to a place where she will have unrestricted access to drugs,’ the senator alleged

Nwoko said he had offered his wife two rehabilitation options in Asokoro or Jordan, ‘where she will not have access to drugs.’

He further alleged that the scene at home was worsened by the interference of Regina’s associates, whom he described as ‘drug suppliers.’

‘While I took Moon to the hospital, a scene of chaos unfolded at home, orchestrated by Sammy, Regina’s main drug supplier.

‘Another known supplier of drugs to Regina is the tiny evil devil called Ann,’ he alleged.

The incident comes weeks after Regina Daniels’ October 10 birthday post and follows earlier signs of strain in the marriage that attracted public attention, including previous social-media moves by Daniels that drew speculation.

Both the personal dynamics of their marriage and Nwoko’s polygamous lifestyle have kept the union in the public eye.

Neither Regina Daniels nor Senator Ned Nwoko has issued an official joint statement addressing the viral video and the allegations circulating online. The story remains fluid as social media and news outlets continue to circulate the footage and family members voice strong reactions.
