In a remarkable display of diplomatic prowess, Ghana’s Ambassador to China, H.E. Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a suit challenging her removal on the recommendation of a five-member committee set up by the President to probe three petitions filed against her.

She is seeking among others, an order setting aside the findings of the committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang and its recommendations which led to her removal as Chief Justice.

She is also seeking an ‘order prohibiting the consideration and appointment of a new substantive Chief Justice of Ghana.’

Justice Torkornoo is again challenging the denial of her ‘salary, benefit, courtesies and other entitlements’ due to her before the Warrant of Removal signed by the President.

Removal

Justice Torkornoo was removed from office as Chief Justice and a Supreme Court judge on September 1, 2025, following the receipt of the report of a five-member committee that probed a petition filed against her.

She became the first ever Chief Justice to be removed from office following the recommendation of a committee probing allegations of misconduct and misbehaviour.

Prior to that, she was suspended on April 22, 2025, following the setting up of the committee to probe the three petitions calling for her removal.

The decision by President John Mahama to remove Justice Torkornoo as the head of the judiciary in line with Article 146(9) generated heated arguments from the moment the decision was announced by the Presidency.

What generated even more criticisms are the three main reasons why the Gabriel Pwamang Committee recommended that she should be removed from office.

Initial Suit

This is the second legal challenge Justice Torkornoo has mounted following her removal from office, a removal many have considered to be politically motivated.

The first one, which was filed last month, is seeking a judicial review and avers that the committee acted in excess of its mandate as it was set up to probe three petitions calling for her removal as Chief Justice and not a judge.

She argues that the Chief Justice is the administrative head of the Judiciary, a function not performed by other Justices of the Supreme Court, therefore, removal as a Chief Justice does not imply automatic removal as a Justice of the Superior Court, which includes the Supreme Court.

Latest Suit

In her latest suit filed by her lawyer, Kwabena Adu-Kusi, Justice Torkornoo argues that all of the alleged findings and grounds for recommendations of the committee set up by the President under Article 146 (6) and (7) of the 1992 Constitution ‘do not meet, even remotely, the standard of ‘stated misconduct, incompetence or infirmity on ground of inability to perform the functions of office’ imposed by Article 146 (1) of the 1992 Constitution as the only constitutional reasons that can lead to the removal of the Chief Justice or Justice of Superior Courts from office.’

She also argues that the findings and recommendations of the committee blatantly violate relevant provisions of the 1992 Constitution and are therefore unconstitutional and illegal.

She further argues that the committee recommending her removal for expenditure that has not been disallowed against her, nor she surcharged for it by the Auditor General is ‘false, misleading, irrational, unreasonable and illegal’ on account of purporting to find misconduct of the Chief Justice for expenditure.

It is her case that the ‘legitimate expenses’ on the Chief Justice’s vacation were administered and authorised by the Judicial Secretary, the Director of Finance, Director of Budget, and the Director of Audit of the Judicial Service who are the duly authorised officers that have administered the Travel Policy of the Judicial Service set by the Judicial Council for Chief Justices and Superior Court Justices since 2010.

Justice Torkornoo also argues that the second recommendation which borders on the transfer of judges is unfair, unreasonable, perverse and absurd as the Chief Justice as head of administration and supervision of the Judiciary is responsible for transferring all judges, including Superior Court Justices, and Judicial Officers of the Judicial Service.

On the third finding, Justice Torkornoo argues that the Chief Justice has a legitimate obligation to recommend Justices for national and international placements and appointments, hence, her recommendation of some judges for promotion to the Supreme Court cannot be a ground for her removal from office.

She is therefore, seeking an order quashing both the findings and recommendations of the committee as well as the Presidential Warrant dated September 1, 2025, which removed her from office as Chief Justice.

Ghana is not known to shy away from international politics. This is evidenced from the days of our first President Kwame Nkrumah whose famous quote: ‘the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked with the total liberation of Africa’ and the projection of Ghana in the international community is apt evidence.

Kwame Nkrumah was on a trip to Hanoi for an official assignment when the coup of February 24, 1966 toppled his government.

Ghana is a major player in international politics, and to think we shall fold our arms and not express our position on major international issues cannot be an attribute of ours.

Last week, the Israeli envoy to Ghana organised a film show to project the image of his country, the second such overture to the people of Ghana.

Roey Gilad, the Israeli ambassador, is on a mission to repair the unfortunately battered image of his country which is becoming a pariah, shunned by most countries of the world.

When a country reaches such a worrying state in the international community, the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the home country should have her missions abroad work overdrive to reverse the picture, which is just what the envoy is doing.

During last week’s dented image reversing film show, the envoy took a gentle, if you like diplomatic, swipe at the government which as represented by the Foreign Affairs Ministry did not oblige an invitation for the programme.

He referred to, as he put it, snobbish receptions accorded the Israeli embassy anytime the mission sought audience with them at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The foregone stems from the stated position of Ghana under the present political administration on the genocide in Gaza and the condemnation of same.

The reality of genocide by scholars, United Nations (UN) and other appropriate agencies is undeniable by the whole world, including Ghana but Israel.

Ghana’s position on the Gazan issue is unwavering and our government could not have stated it otherwise.

We are opposed to the use of such brutality on a people, including the weaponisation of food in a dehumanising effort to wipe out a whole people.

We do not agree with what happened on October 7 on Israel, but the disproportionate retaliatory war on unarmed women and children which killed over 60,000 persons cannot be justified.

Even as the so-called ceasefire holds, Israel still finds cause to continue killing unarmed Gazans by the occupation forces.

And the Israeli mission wants our government and people to pretend that nothing untoward is happening in this part of the Middle East?

Israel’s impunity to international law has gone past the redline, and for the envoy to think a film show is enough to reverse our image about Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu is to belittle our intelligence.

Using the outstanding bodies of Israeli captives buried under the rubbles of Gaza as part of the ceasefire terms, to continue to kill armless women and children is the height of hypocrisy and inhumanness.

If Bibi wants the bodies of the dead Israelis, he should allow the international community such as Turkey bring in the relevant equipment to seek and retrieve same.

Saying no to such gestures means that Bibi is not yet done with his killing mission.

We stand by our Foreign Ministry in the just posture against genocide, especially as it is playing out in Palestine. We believe that only the two-state solution can address insecurity in this part of the Middle East.

As for an apology from our government, they won’t get it.

Last Saturday’s United Showbiz late-night show on UTV was filled with heated tension between pundit MC Yaa Yeboah and host Mrs. Empress Gifty Adorye over claims made against her regarding the desire for a good husband.

This misunderstanding was as a result of Empress Gifty’s claims of dedicating prayers to fellow colleague MC Yaa Yeboah to get a good husband in the coming days, during a discussion with Rev. Abboh on matters relating to the late Daddy Lumba’s marital controversies.

During the discussion, Rev. Abboh was heard saying it is an error for a lady to dedicate a prayer for a husband, considering the fact that men including married ones are in abundance and ready for marriage, hence it is needles to make such request from God.

Empress Gifty immediately said, ‘Oh, this is the prayers I have been praying for MC.’ In response, MC Yeboah said, ‘Empress, please retract that statement, I have not informed you I am in need of a husband, please I beg you.’

Engineers and Planners Ltd (EandP), one of Africa’s leading mining and Civil Engineering firms, has completed US$100 million final payment for the acquisition of Azumah Resources Limited, making it the sole owner of the Black Volta Gold concessions in the Upper West Region.

Briefing stakeholders last Friday in Accra, following an agreement by EandP to acquire total shares of Black Volta and Sankofa gold projects from Azumah Resources, Executive Director at Azumah Resources Limited in charge of Finance and Sustainability, Okyere Danquah, said the payment for the total acquisition of Azumah Resources Limited has been settled.

The settlement transactions, he explained, involved two international transfers through the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

Background

The government granted a lease to an Australian company, Azumah Resources Ghana for a gold concession in the Upper West Region in 1992.

According to EandP, from 1992 till 2022, the company was unable to commence any significant exploration activities on the land, contrary to the terms of the lease agreement.

On October 9, 2023, EandP and Azumah Resources Limited signed a Project Acquisition and Development Agreement following an offer by Azumah Resources in May 2023 to sell the project to EandP for $100 million.

But in August 2024, Mr. James Walbank, a Director of Azumah Resources, demanded that the price of the project which was originally $100 million should be increased to $300 million, citing increase in the price of gold in October 2023.

The request from Azumah Resources Limited led to several months of litigation in court when EandP rejected the proposal for an increase and insisted on paying the original value of $100 million agreed between the parties for the sale of the project.

Subsequently, Engineers and Planners on July 7, this year, signed an agreement to acquire a US$100 million facility from ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development following a formal application to the bank in 2024 to enable them take full control of operations of Azumah Resources Black Gold Project in the Upper West Region.

Mr. Danquah, who also showed evidence of payment by EandP through swift transfers bank document, said, ‘On the 6th and 7th of October, 2025, ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), through Standard Chartered, transferred US$ 91,923,963 to IGIC PTE Ltd in Singapore and US$8,076,037 to CANGOL PTE Ltd. London, making full payment of $100 million.’

Litigation Resolved

But, according to EandP, all issues pertaining to the payment transactions that led to the litigation in court have all been resolved.

‘On the 6th and 7th of October, this month, we paid all the $100 million to now bring closure to the acquisition phase of the Black Volta Gold Project, so as we speak right now, the single sole owner for the equity stake of Azumah is EandP through its beneficial owner Mr. Ibrahim Mahama,’ the Finance and Sustainability Director disclosed.

According to Mr. Danquah, all engagements for the acquisition was purely commercial without political influence, adding that though earlier cost of capital needed for the development of the concessions amounted to about US$204 million, other investment partners are currently reviewing the cost for work at the mines to start in earnest in the next 15 months.

Mr. Danquah also mentioned that apart from jobs that will be created by the company for dozens of people, including natives in its operational area, structures are already in place to help provide the needed support to the communities in the Upper West Region as well.

Director of Azumah Resources Limited, Noel Nii Addo, for his part, also confirmed to the stakeholders that all the former owners of the company have resigned and paid off all their benefits.

‘The transaction is in two folds; the acquisition of the shares and acquisition of the loan of the company all for the consideration of US$100 million. EandP acquired the shares first, and negotiated and paid off for the loan. EandP takes over the loan of the previous owners to bring finality to the transaction.

‘EandP now holds 100% equity in Azumah, making it the sole owner of the Black Volta concession,’ Mr. Addo stressed.

New Management

With the completion of the transaction, Mr. Addo said the Board of Directors has been reconstituted to reflect the new ownership structure.

He said all former foreign directors have formally resigned, and a new Ghanaian management team has assumed responsibility for the company’s operations and strategic direction.

‘The Board and Management will immediately begin engagements with statutory regulators and relevant third-party entities to ensure a smooth transition in full compliance with Ghanaian law and the regulations governing the mining sector,’ he stated.

Azumah Resources Ghana Limited reaffirmed its commitment to developing the Black Volta and Sankofa Gold Projects in a responsible, transparent, and sustainable manner.

‘The conclusion of this transaction and the restructuring of the board mark a defining moment for Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd. We are confident that the new management and shareholders have the capacity, integrity, and commitment to advance the Black Volta and Sankofa projects in line with Ghana’s highest standards of governance and sustainability,’ Mr. Addo stated.

The Black Volta project is expected to produce an average of 163,000 ounces of gold per year.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer candidate, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has outlined an ambitious plan to transform the country by relocating selected ministries and their agencies from the capital, Accra, to other regions.

Speaking during his campaign tour in Salaga North, he explained that the country cannot achieve a balanced development when government institutions, economic activities, and opportunities remain concentrated in the capital city alone.

His policy vision is based on the belief that national progress must reflect regional growth, not just the expansion of Accra.

For decades, successive governments have spoken about decentralisation without taking the bold steps necessary to implement it. The result has been unequal development, rural-urban migration, congestion in Accra, and the slow death of many towns that once had economic promise.

Mr. Agyapong’s proposal seeks to shift the economic and administrative structure of the country by empowering regions to manage major sectors of the national economy.

In his view, decentralisation should not be a political slogan but a deliberate shift of government authority, employment opportunities, and investment infrastructure to all regions.

Under his plan, ministries will be relocated based on the natural economic strengths of the regions. For example, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture would be moved to the northern part of the country, where fertile land, livestock production, and irrigation potential can be harnessed to establish Ghana as a major food exporter within West Africa.

With the ministry and its agencies physically located there, the north would receive direct investment in agricultural processing, storage, research, and mechanisation services, creating long-term employment and reducing poverty.

Similarly, the Ministry of Energy would be headquartered in the Western Region, where most of Ghana’s oil and gas resources are located.

This would ensure proper supervision of the extractive sector, promote local content participation, and accelerate the development of energy-related industries such as petrochemical plants and gas processing parks. By linking resource governance directly to the regions that produce them, his plan seeks to bring fairness and efficiency into national resource management.

Tourism would also be decentralised under this policy. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, he argues, could be relocated to the Volta Region to boost domestic and international tourism traffic along the eastern corridor.

With its mountains, waterfalls, beaches, rich cultural heritage and proximity to Togo, the region would become a major tourism and creative arts hub. The move would stimulate hotels, transportation services, festivals, film production, and heritage tourism businesses across the region.

This decentralisation agenda will not only reshape governance but also expand inter-regional trade. When ministries and industries are distributed across regions, new transport networks will naturally emerge, boosting commerce among cities and towns. Roads and rail lines will connect regions based on trade needs, rather than forcing all economic activities to pass through Accra. Markets will expand, warehouses and distribution centres will grow in regional hubs, and local farmers, artisans, and manufacturers will gain access to wider markets.

Relocating ministries will also reduce the growing pressure on Accra.

Mr. Agyapong argues that it makes no sense for young people from every region to migrate to Accra simply because that is where the jobs are. By moving government institutions, associated private sector jobs will follow, bringing economic life to towns that are currently ignored or treated as ‘dead cities.’

Tamale, Koforidua, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Bolgatanga and other regional capitals will experience growth through construction, business relocation, and service sector expansion.

His plan includes digital governance systems to maintain efficiency and accountability. Even if ministries are in different regions, smart administration will make coordination seamless. Files and meetings will no longer require travel to Accra, as digital management, video conferencing and integrated data systems will connect all ministries and agencies across the nation.

This policy also responds to the long-standing demand for regional equity. Every region in Ghana contributes to national development, yet many feel excluded from the benefits of state resources.

True unity, Mr. Agyapong believes, is built when citizens feel that government works for them no matter where they live. Decentralisation will strengthen national cohesion by giving regions a direct stake in national development.

This policy signals a move away from Accra-centered development toward a future where Ghana grows together-region by region, sector by sector, and opportunity by opportunity.

At least three individuals have been arrested by personnel of the Ghana Police Service for their alleged involvement in the recent sporadic shooting incident that occurred at the Sakumono Celebrity Golf Club in the Greater Accra Region.

While the cause of this disturbance has not been made available to the public, the police, in a brief statement, disclosed that investigations have begun to determine the circumstances surrounding the cause of the incident, which disrupted activities at the popular leisure facility.

The statement read, ‘The Accra Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into a shooting incident that occurred yesterday, October 18, 2025, at the Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono, Accra. Three persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend any other persons involved.’

The police reiterated their commitment to uncovering the cause of the incident as well as arresting more perpetrators, while assuring that additional details will be communicated in due course.

Zenith Bank Ghana has celebrated its 20th anniversary with a massive health walk that brought together a large number of customers and staff.

The anniversary was held under the theme ’20 Years of Impact, A Lifetime of Shared Growth.’

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Ghana, Henry Onwuzurigbo, said the health walk was a symbolic gesture representing the bank’s journey to build a financial institution that stands tall in Ghana and across Africa.

He noted, ‘This year’s Health Walk is particularly special and meaningful to us. It is a symbolic gesture representing the journey we have taken together over the past 20 years to build a financial institution that stands tall in Ghana and commands respect across Africa and the globe.’

The Founder and Leader of the House of Revival at Fawode in the Ashanti Region, Apostle Emmanuel Kusi Boateng, has called on Christians to show greater honour and appreciation to their spiritual leaders, describing pastors as divine mouthpieces through whom God ministers to His people.

Apostle Kusi Boateng made the call when he delivered a sermon as the guest speaker at the Father’s Appreciation Service of the Fire Trinity Ministry International (FTMI) at Aburaso, in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region. The event was held to celebrate the General Overseer of FTMI, Apostle Dr. George Amoako Alhassan, for his unwavering service to God and humanity.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Honouring Your Father’ – drawn from Hebrews 13:7 – Apostle Kusi Boateng cited John 12:28 to emphasise that pastors serve as God’s representatives on earth and deserve honour from their congregations.

‘Pastors are God’s mouthpiece to their flock. They connect men to God, and whatever we give to them, we give unto the Lord,’ he stated, adding that honouring one’s spiritual father opens doors of divine favour and blessing.

He further noted that extending acts of kindness to one’s pastor may sometimes feel tiring or burdensome, but reminded believers, quoting Galatians 6:9, that such gestures accumulate spiritual rewards in due season. ‘It may look wearisome giving from time to time, but whatever is given to our fathers piles up blessings that are released from Heaven at the appointed time,’ he explained.

Apostle Kusi Boateng cautioned church members against neglecting the needs of their leaders, saying, ‘It is wrong to see your father in need and do nothing about it.’ He urged believers to cultivate a culture of gratitude and continuous support for their pastors as a reflection of their obedience to God’s word.

Quoting 2 Timothy 3:14-17, he encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and continue in good works, stressing that honouring those who teach and lead them is part of living a complete, godly life.

The appreciation service was filled with heartfelt tributes, music ministrations, and presentations made to Apostle Dr. George Amoako Alhassan and his family, who expressed deep gratitude to the church.

Rapper, Medikal and singer Eazzy have welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named Space Frimpong.

The announcement was made on Friday, 17 October 2025, when Medikal shared a photo on Instagram holding the newborn in a room decorated with balloons spelling out ‘Space Frimpong, 17.10.25.’

This is Medikal’s second child. He has a daughter, Island Frimpong, from his previous marriage with actress, Fella Makafui.
