2026 World Cup: Blatter criticises FIFA over Balogun red Card reversal

Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, has criticised FIFA for overturning the red card shown to United States striker, Folarin Balogun.

Balogun was sent off during the USA’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was expected to miss his country’s next game because of a one-match suspension.

However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the striker would be available to play against Belgium in the World Cup knockout stage.

Reacting to the decision, Blatter questioned the process that led to the suspension being cancelled.

In a post on X, he said:

‘Red cards should only be overturned through proper rules, evidence and independent decisions.

‘If a U.S. President speaks to the FIFA President and a player is suddenly cleared to play before an important World Cup match, people will naturally ask questions.

‘Football must never become a place where political influence affects sporting decisions.’

Blatter’s comments add to the growing debate surrounding FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to feature in the crucial World Cup clash against Belgium.

Lagos saves N118bn property, rescues 1,900 lives

The Lagos State Government has strengthened its emergency response capacity with the addition of 11 new fire stations, the deployment of 62 modern firefighting vehicles, the reconstruction of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, and the recruitment of 150 firefighters currently undergoing training at the upgraded Fire Academy.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Monday at the opening of the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 3.0, themed ‘Preventing the Preventable: Strengthening Fire Safety in Buildings and Business Hubs,’ held at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja.

Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the governor also revealed that the state’s emergency responders saved an estimated ?118 billion worth of property and rescued more than 1,900 lives in 2025.

Sanwo-Olu said the government would continue to strengthen emergency response through sustained investment in personnel, equipment and technology, while placing greater emphasis on prevention, enforcement, public education and strategic partnerships.

According to him, Lagos has intensified enforcement of fire safety regulations through stricter inspections and implementation of the Fire Safety Levy, stressing that compliance must go beyond obtaining certificates to ensuring that safety equipment and systems remain fully functional.

The governor said the interventions have increased the number of fire stations in the state to 29, with additional stations under construction in Yaba, Ikotun and Oworonshoki.

He also highlighted the introduction of the Fire Marshal Programme, designed to train volunteers in homes, schools, markets, offices, worship centres and factories to identify fire risks early, coordinate evacuations and support emergency responders before incidents escalate.

Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Hon. Olawale Rauf Age-Suleiman, described safety as a shared responsibility and urged participants to develop practical solutions capable of reducing fire disasters across the state.

Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, said the conference was aimed at shifting attention from emergency response to fire prevention through innovation, lessons from previous incidents and improved risk management.

He disclosed that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service saved properties valued at more than ?11 billion within the last year, attributing the achievement to sustained government investment in emergency response, fire prevention, public awareness and modern rescue operations.

Chief Executive Officer of Sadeco, Mr. Vincent Effiong, called for greater collaboration, technological innovation and community participation to improve fire detection, emergency preparedness and coordinated response.

In a presentation titled ‘Case Studies and Lessons Learned: Lagos Fire Incident Statistics Trends and Corrective Actions – Sanwo-Olu’s 7-Year Scorecards,’ Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Abimbola Adeseye, praised the Sanwo-Olu administration for transforming the agency through sustained investment in infrastructure, equipment, manpower development and operational efficiency since 2019.

NiMet issues flash flood alert for 27 states as peak rains begin

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised concerns over the likelihood of flash flooding in several parts of the country during the first 10 days of July, warning that persistent rainfall could leave many communities vulnerable.

The agency said the alert covers the period from July 1 to July 10, noting that the onset of the peak rainy season, combined with already saturated ground conditions, has significantly increased the risk of flooding.

In an advisory released on Sunday, NiMet explained that the widespread rainfall recorded in June has left the soil unable to absorb much more water.

‘Following widespread rainfall recorded across many parts of Nigeria in June, soils have become heavily saturated, reducing their ability to absorb additional rainfall.

‘As July marks the beginning of the peak rainy season, the risk of flash flooding is expected to increase, particularly in low-lying, urban, coastal, and poorly drained areas,’ the statement said.

According to the agency, the states most likely to be affected are Taraba, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Kogi, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa.

NiMet warned that intense rainfall could disrupt daily activities and essential services. It said flooding may obstruct major roads, slow movement of people and goods, and lead to traffic congestion in affected areas.

The agency added that interruptions to electricity supply and telecommunications services could occur, while reduced visibility during heavy downpours may create hazards for motorists and aviation operations.

Agriculture and public infrastructure are also expected to face pressure if the forecast materialises. NiMet said prolonged rainfall could leave farmlands waterlogged, resulting in crop losses, while roads, bridges, drainage systems and other public assets may sustain damage.

The weather agency also expressed concern about the possibility of outbreaks of waterborne diseases, urging health authorities to remain alert as stagt floodwater and poor sanitation could increase public health risks.

To reduce the impact of the expected flooding, NiMet advised residents and emergency personnel to act promptly.

The agency urged Nigerians to: ‘Follow weather forecasts and flash flood advisories issued by NiMet; keep drains, gutters, and waterways free of refuse to ensure the free flow of water.

‘Also, it said it should secure loose outdoor objects and reinforce vulnerable structures; and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.’

NiMet further called on emergency management agencies and community leaders to strengthen preparedness ahead of any flooding.

It stated: ‘SEMAs, NEMA, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders should strengthen preparedness and response measures.’

The agency maintained that advance planning remains the best defence against the destructive effects of flash floods.

‘Early preparedness and timely action remain essential in reducing the impacts of flash flooding,’ it added.Adding the advisory, NiMet appealed for public vigilance and collective responsibility.

‘An informed community is a prepared community. Know the risks and Act Early.’

2027: APC chairmen unveil plan for nationwide projects tour

The chairmen of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have announced plans to embark on nationwide tour to evaluate developmental projects and achievements of the party’s governors and President Bola Tinubu to enable them to effectively engage Nigerians during campaigns for the 2027 elections.

APC chairpersons announced this on Sunday after they concluded a three-day meeting and inspection of landmark projects in Lagos.

The APC State Chairmen’s Forum spoke during a courtesy visit to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House, Marina.

The forum’s Chairman and Lagos APC Chairman, Mr Cornelius Ojelabi, explained the objectives of the nationwide assessment.

Ojelabi said Lagos was deliberately selected as the first destination because of what he described as the state’s remarkable developmental strides under successive APC administrations.

‘We are beginning our tour of the 36 states and Abuja because we believe it is important for the leadership of our party to assess the achievements recorded by APC,’ he said.

According to him, the ruling party presently controls at least 32 states alongside the Federal Government, making periodic evaluation of goverce achievements both necessary and beneficial.

He said the inspection would equip party leaders with verifiable evidence of government performance while interacting with voters during campaigns across different parts of the federation.

‘The purpose of bringing together the chairmen is to assess these achievements so that, when they meet the electorate, they will have tangible accomplishments to present.

‘If I am asking Nigerians to vote for my party, I must be able to point to what we have done to positively impact their lives,’ he said.

The forum’s spokesman and Edo APC Chairman, Chief Jarrett Tenebe, said members devoted two days to inspecting projects undertaken by President Bola Tinubu and the Lagos Government.

‘We visited several completed projects, and they speak for themselves. These are projects we intend to showcase across Nigeria.

‘They are evidence that the President is a man of honour, committed to development and deserving of another opportunity to serve the nation,’ he said.

Tenebe disclosed that the forum also held extensive deliberations on preparations for the 2027 general elections during its three-day gathering in Lagos.

He said members resolved to sustain similar engagements across the federation while strengthening collaboration with APC governors and grassroots party structures to improve mobilisation efforts.

According to him, the forum equally agreed to convene additional meetings in Abuja to address emerging challenges before the elections and promote peaceful electoral participation.

‘We agreed to hold additional meetings in Abuja to address challenges ahead of the elections and ensure a seamless, peaceful and credible electoral process,’ Tenebe said.

The forum’s Secretary and Nasarawa APC Chairman, Dr Aliyu Bello, expressed satisfaction with the projects inspected during the Lagos visit, describing them as beyond expectations.

‘We came to Lagos expecting to assess projects, but what we saw exceeded our expectations,’ Bello said while commending the state’s infrastructural development.

Bello said that the forum had resolved to organise a retreat for APC state chairmen and confirmed Kano as the venue for its next meeting.

Earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed the forum and urged members to consolidate party unity while sustaining grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

‘I’m excited that the leadership of our great party has come together at the highest level to demonstrate unity, solidarity and commitment to the continued growth of APC,’ he said.

The governor encouraged the chairmen to continue sharing experiences, strengthening party structures and providing purposeful leadership in their respective states across the country.

‘Your willingness to work together, share experiences and build stronger party structures is commendable.

‘As leaders of our great party in your respective states, you have the responsibility to continue providing courageous and purposeful leadership.

‘Continue to unite our members and position the APC for greater success,’ he said.

Countdown to 14th WAFCON: World Cup spot will be added motivation – Falcons’ Babajide

Super Falcons’ ace forward Rinsola Babajide believes that the increase in the number of participating teams at this year’s Women Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco will only make the tournament more exciting.

Ahead of the final tournament scheduled for Morocco 26th July – 16th August, the Italian Serie A Femminile champion with AS Roma told thenff.com that the competition transmuting from a 12-nation to a 16-nation-finals does not make much difference, as the motivation to triumph remains the same for the Cup holders.

‘I think it makes it more exciting. We all know that this year’s Women AFCON is also for qualification to the World Cup finals. Of course, we all want to be there. I think it will make it more competitive but for us, the goal remains the same.

‘For us as a team, whether we are playing just to be crowned champions of Africa or for qualification to next year’s World Cup, the pressure is the same as we want to win.

The only pressure actually is the one we put on ourselves. We know what we signed up for as professionals and being the defending champions, we want to retain our trophy.’

The exciting forward, who was part of the squad that reclaimed the Women AFCON title for Nigeria in Morocco last year, looked back at her earlier years and credited her development as a complete player to the excellent foundation she got in England and the resilience she has learnt with Nigeria.

‘I’ve been blessed to have the best of two worlds. England helped me develop my game from age-grade football; I am forever grateful for that. I have continued to grow as an experienced player with Nigeria and I do not take this for granted.

I have learnt resilience and professionalism in both environments and these make me a better player and a better person. We know what it takes to win and as a team, we will give it our all in Morocco to retain the trophy. We are all determined to make Nigeria proud in Morocco.’

Breaking: Kola Olawuyi’s widow, Abimbola, is dead

Abimbola Olawuyi, the widow of late investigative broadcaster and journalist Kola Olawuyi, has died, bringing another wave of grief to a family that has lived with the loss of one of Nigeria’s most celebrated media figures for nearly two decades.

PM News learnt that Abimbola died on Monday morning after a brief illness.

A member of the Olawuyi family, who confirmed the development to PM News on condition of anonymity, said she passed away peacefully after falling ill.

Her death comes 19 years after the passing of her husband, Kola Olawuyi, the pioneering investigative journalist whose fearless reporting transformed crime and investigative broadcasting in Southwest Nigeria.

Widely regarded as one of the region’s most influential broadcasters, Kola Olawuyi became a household name through his popular radio and television programmes, Iriri Aye (translated as Experiences of Life) and Nnkan Nbe, which exposed criminal activities, ritual killings, fraud, and other social vices. His bold style of journalism earned him widespread respect and established him as a trusted voice for justice and accountability.

Following his death, Abimbola largely stayed away from the public spotlight, dedicating herself to raising their four children and preserving the family through years of personal sacrifice.

According to the family source, she remained the backbone of the household, carrying the responsibilities left behind after the death of her husband.

‘Abimbola has been a pillar of strength for the family. Her death is really painful. She has been taking care of the family and the four children left by her husband, Kola Olawuyi, and now the children are orphans. Only God knows what lies ahead for them. I am deeply pained,’ the family member told PM News.

The source described her as a devoted mother whose resilience, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment kept the family together despite the enormous challenges that followed the death of the veteran journalist.

Family members said her passing has left relatives, friends and well-wishers devastated, as many regarded her as the steady force that sustained the Olawuyi family over the past 19 years.

The family said burial arrangements will be announced in due course.

Kola Olawuyi remains one of the pioneers of investigative broadcasting in Southwest Nigeria. Through Iriri Aye and Nnkan Nbe, he used storytelling and investigative journalism to highlight crime, social injustice, and other issues affecting society, earning a lasting place in the history of Nigerian broadcasting.

With Abimbola’s death, the Olawuyi family has suffered yet another profound loss, closing another chapter in the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most respected broadcasting families.
