The Legacy Award was presented to Michelle Garnaut, founder of M on the Bund, in recognition of her pioneering influence on Mainland China’s dining and cultural landscape. Since opening in 1999, her Shanghai institution has not only redefined fine dining but also fostered a vibrant space for creativity and community.

The evening embodied Tatler’s signature blend of sophistication and celebration. Over 400 distinguished guests gathered at Paragon Hall for a multi-course gala dinner curated by five acclaimed chefs: Sujira Pongmorn (Khaan, Thailand), Herlander Fernandes (Mesa, Macau), Dej Kewkacha (Gaggan at Louis Vuitton, Thailand), and Henrik Yde-Andersen with Chayawee Sutcharitchan (Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin, Thailand).

Notable attendees included Tunku Jamie Nadzimuddin of Malaysia’s royal family, HRH Sarimah Ibrahim and Awal Ashaari of Malaysia, and Mond Gutierrez from the Philippines, lending the event an international flair. Guests were also treated to an evocative opening performance by Jodokcello, the Swiss cellist famed for blending classical and contemporary styles.

‘Tonight reflects what Tatler Best is all about – bringing together the people, stories, and passions that define excellence across our region,’ said Michel Lamunière, Chairman and CEO of Tatler Asia. ‘It’s a celebration not only of the winners, but of a community that continues to inspire creativity and innovation in hospitality.’

The celebrations continued with an after-party led by DJ and Music Director Daryll Griggs, keeping the energy high late into the night – a fitting finale to an unforgettable evening.

Recognising True Excellence

The Tatler Best Awards serve as Tatler Asia’s flagship regional platform, distinct from national Tatler Best lists across markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Winners are determined through the collective input of Tatler’s trusted community – tastemakers with influence, discernment, and appreciation for quality – ensuring the awards reflect genuine recognition from those shaping Asia-Pacific’s luxury landscape.

Tatler Best Takeover Series in Bangkok

Extending the celebration beyond the gala, the Tatler Best Takeover Series runs from 17 to 25 October, featuring one-night-only chef and mixologist collaborations across Bangkok’s leading venues. Bringing together award-winning talents from Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand, the series offers diners a front-row seat to the creativity shaping Asia-Pacific’s culinary future.

Man arrested for mailing 36 grenade rounds from Narathiwat to Tak

A man has been arrested in Pattani for allegedly sending 36 grenade launcher rounds through a parcel delivery service from Narathiwat to a buyer in Tak province.

Col Ekwarit Chobchuphon, deputy spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4, said on Thursday that soldiers arrested Gizam Wuthangkur on Wednesday in Nong Chik district, Pattani, after discovering his link to the shipment.

He was initially taken to Ingkhayutthaborihan Camp in Nong Chik for questioning before being transferred to the 46th Ranger Regiment Task Force in Narathiwat’s Muang district for further interrogation as authorities sought to identify other suspects.

‘Authorities are conducting an in-depth interrogation to find more people involved and to determine the source of the ammunition,’ Col Ekwarit told reporters.

The arrest followed a report from a logistics company to Bang Klam police in Songkhla, which said it had discovered a suspicious parcel at a distribution centre. The parcel, sent from Narathiwat and bound for Mae Sot in Tak, was found to contain 40mm grenade rounds, typically used in M79 launchers.

Isoc did not specify the exact number of seized rounds, but a photo on its official Facebook page showed 36. Col Ekwarit said Mr Gizam had confessed to sending the parcel.

Under Thai law, possession or transfer of war weapons is prohibited without official authorisation.

A preliminary investigation found that both the sender and recipient used fake names and prepaid phone numbers to conceal their identities. Mr Gizam reportedly told investigators he had been contacted via social media between July and August by an acquaintance seeking to buy 40mm rounds.

After agreeing on a price, he arranged a handover with a supplier at a petrol station in Yala’s Muang district on Monday, before mailing the ammunition from Narathiwat. The parcel was intercepted before delivery.

Authorities said the seized rounds were not from army stock, as none matched the military’s inventory records.

It remained unclear whether Mr Gizam resided in Narathiwat, where the parcel was sent, or in Pattani, where he was arrested.

Col Ekwarit said the grenade rounds did not belong to the army, as none of them were recorded in its inventory.

Authorities seize 4.8m speed pills in Chiang Rai

Authorities intercepted a major shipment of more than 4.8 million pills in Chiang Saen district, near the Golden Triangle, late on Thursday night, police said. A smuggler managed to evade arrest by abandoning his vehicle and fleeing across the Mekong River.

Pol Col Anuphan Kantharat, chief of Chiang Saen police, and senior officials and officers from the Pha Muang Task Force, Border Patrol Police Company 327, marine police and concerned agencies on Friday inspected the seized drugs and a pickup truck registered in Chiang Rai that was used for drug smuggling.

The drug seizure followed a tip-off late on Thursday that a large shipment of drugs would be transported from Myanmar into Chiang Saen district. A joint task force was immediately set up to intercept a suspected vehicle.

Officers later spotted a grey Nissan pickup truck without a rear licence plate leaving a local hotel, heavily loaded and heading towards the Golden Triangle area in Sop Ruak village Moo 1 in tambon Wiang of Chiang Saen district.

When the driver encountered a checkpoint at the Golden Triangle service point, he accelerated and broke through the barrier.

However, the vehicle’s tire burst shortly afterwards, causing it to veer off and come to a stop in a parking area near Si Phandin market along the Mekong River. Police said they saw a tall, thin man exit the vehicle and flee toward the riverbank, where he jumped into the Mekong and escaped.

Upon inspection, the arresting team found 13 fertiliser sacks in the bed of the pickup truck and six sacks in the passenger seats. The sacks contained more than 4.8 million speed pills, weighing about 536 kilogrammes.

The seized narcotics were handed over to Chiang Saen police station for further legal proceedings.

Authorities are now expanding the investigation to identify and apprehend individuals connected to the smuggling operation.

Trader loses 165 million baht in stock scam

Several traders have fallen victim to a devious stock scam, losing millions of baht after trusting false promises of high-yield investments. One seasoned investor alone lost 165 million baht, revealing her experience on a recent television programme and warning others of the growing menace of online investment fraud.

The episode of the popular talk show, Hon Krasae, on Thursday featured a woman, using the alias Ms A, who recounted her experience of falling victim to a scam promising a lucrative stock tip. She was joined by two other victims: Ms B, who lost 28 million baht, and Dech, a man who sold his house hoping to make a profit from the scam.

Ms A explained she regularly invests in stocks and first encountered the scam after seeing an online advertisement for a ‘stock expert’.

Upon signing up, she was contacted via the LINE messaging application by an individual claiming to be the secretary of a top trader, who then introduced her to the supposed master trader. She was soon integrated into a large online chat group comprising around 300 members discussing stock trades.

Soon after, Ms A was offered the opportunity to trade shares of a major asset management firm. She was instructed to create a new trading portfolio via an app seemingly designed exclusively for the group.

Despite noticing irregularities, such as transfers being made to various personal accounts, Ms A continued investing, enticed by the consistent, seemingly lucrative returns.

Her investments grew to a portfolio valued at 500 million baht. When she attempted to withdraw her funds, she was told to pay a 10% service fee. After transferring the fee, however, the app ceased functioning, and the entire chat group disbanded.

Expressing remorse, Ms A said she decided to speak out to warn others about such scams. Alongside other victims on the programme, she emphasised the importance of caution and urged those affected not to despair but to seek justice by pressing charges and alerting authorities.

The victims said they hope their ordeal can serve as a warning to prevent others from falling into similar traps, highlighting the importance of vigilance in online investments.

Trump says all Canada trade talks ‘terminated’

US President Donald Trump said Thursday he was ending trade talks with Canada over an anti-tariff advertising campaign, a sudden about-face soon after a cordial White House meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

On his Truth Social network, Trump vented fury at what he called a “fake” ad that he said misquoted former president Ronald Reagan discussing tariff policy.

Trump said the campaign — produced by the Canadian province of Ontario to be aired on US television channels — was designed to “interfere with the decision of the US Supreme Court,” which is due to rule on his sweeping global tariffs.

“Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump posted.

There was no immediate comment from officials in Canada, where Carney said in a budget speech on Wednesday that Washington’s “fundamentally changed” trade policy required a revamp of Ottawa’s economic strategy.

Trump said “the Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.”

The foundation wrote on X that the Ontario government had used “selective audio and video” from a radio address on trade that Reagan had delivered in 1987.

It said the ad “misrepresents” what the former Republican president said, adding that it was “reviewing its legal options”.

The ad used quotes from Reagan’s speech, in which he warned against some of the ramifications that high tariffs on foreign imports could have on the US economy.

It cited Reagan as saying that “high tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars,” a quote that matches a transcript of his speech on the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library’s website.

– ‘Rupture’ –

The latest twist in relations between the United States and Canada came just over two weeks after Carney visited Trump at the White House to seek a relaxation of stiff US tariffs.

At that meeting, Trump described Carney as a “world-class leader” and said the Canadian would “walk away very happy” from their discussion.

Trump’s global sectoral tariffs — particularly on steel, aluminum, and autos — have hit Canada hard, forcing job losses and squeezing businesses.

For now, the United States and Canada continue to adhere to an existing North American trade deal called the USMCA, which ensures that roughly 85 percent of cross-border trade in both directions remains tariff-free.

In his speech on Wednesday, ahead of the unveiling of the 2025 federal budget next month, Carney said that the United States has raised “its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression”.

“The scale and speed of these developments are not a smooth transition, they’re a rupture. They mean our economic strategy needs to change dramatically,” Carney added, saying the process “will take some sacrifices and some time.”

Both Trump and the Canadian prime minister are due to attend gatherings in the coming days — the regional summit of Southeast Asian nations (Asean) in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Forum in South Korea.

Earlier this week, Carney had said Ottawa was in “intensive negotiations” with Washington for a trade deal.

Canada is a major supplier of steel and aluminum for US businesses, and Carney had expressed optimism about the prospects of a breakthrough in those sectors.

Carney has also said his government is focused on preserving the USMCA, which was signed during Trump’s first term and is scheduled for review in 2026.

While most cross-border food trade has remained tariff-free, some US tariffs and Canadian countermeasures have forced some suppliers to raise prices.

Data released Tuesday showed Canada’s annual inflation rate rising to 2.4% in September — slightly above analyst expectations, with rising grocery prices partly driving the inflation bump.

Canadian grocery stores have historically relied heavily on US imports.

Naga limited edition highlights Thai culture

Since 2009, a partnership between Chopard and Yamada Heiando has combined haute horlogerie and the art of Japanese lacquer, derived from the sap of the urushi tree.

The dials of the very first L.U.C XP Urushi Collection were graced by the phoenix, kylin, tiger, genbu and blue-horn dragon. The ongoing collaboration in 2025 takes on another mythical creature for the Thailand-exclusive L.U.C XPS Urushi Naga.

A national symbol since 2022, the serpent-like naga appears in Thai arts and culture and is honoured in traditions such as Bung Fai Phya Nak (Naga Fireballs) and Lai Ruea Fai (Procession of Illuminated Boats) along the Mekong River held at the end of the Buddhist Lent in October.

“In Thai culture, the naga is revered as a divine and protective force. Therefore, it is important for us to convey its various attributes by commissioning a local artist for the imagery,” said Tanaporn Jiramaneekul, general manager of S.T. Diamond — the Chopard retailer in Thailand.

The Swiss watchmaker engaged Chiang Rai-based Warunyoo Somboon, whose signature style is inspired by traditional Thai paintings. The rising young artist portrays the naga emerging from the Mekong River, surrounded by traditional motifs symbolising protection, prosperity and spiritual guardianship.

“Warunyoo translated our vision of the L.U.C XPS Urushi Naga timepiece in great details. His work has been reproduced as a miniature on the dial, with the mythical creature exquisitely captured in urushi lacquer,” said Tanaporn.

The Tokyo-based Yamada Heiando has been crafting lacquerware since 1919, and the exceptional quality earned the Royal Warrant from the Japanese emperor.

Today, its master artisans include Minori Koizumi, who took over 20 hours to complete each dial of the L.U.C XPS Urushi Naga, with the mixture of Japanese lacquer and natural pigments, enriched by gold dust, and his craftsmanship making it a work of art.

The 39.5mm case shines in ethical 18-carat rose gold, with its slim profile accommodating an ultra-thin automatic movement developed in-house at the Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier.

Limited to 10 pieces, the L.U.C XPS Urushi Naga is available exclusively at the Chopard boutique, on Siam Paragon’s M Floor.

Global Power Synergy planning to invest more in Indian renewables

SET-listed Global Power Synergy (GPSC) is planning to expand its renewable energy investment in India, which is promoting greater use of clean energy.

The Indian government has a clear policy to promote renewable energy, aiming to increase renewable power generation capacity by 45,000 megawatts annually until 2030, said Sirimet Leepagorn, president and acting chief operating officer of GPSC.

If renewable power continues to increase as planned, India’s total capacity is expected to reach 500,000MW in 2030.

“This means there will be more opportunities in the renewable energy business in India,” said Mr Sirimet.

GPSC intends to seek new business opportunities in addition to investment through Global Renewable Synergy, which holds a 39.90% stake in Avaada Energy Private Ltd.

Avaada operates renewable energy businesses in several Indian states and has a total committed power generation capacity of 20,558MW.

Of the total committed capacity, 6,000MW is in commercial operation, with the remaining capacity scheduled to come online within 24 months.

GPSC is also exploring investment opportunities in businesses related to the data centre industry in India, focused on providing clean electricity to data centre operators.

No conclusions have been reached yet, as negotiations with local partners are underway to explore feasibility, Mr Sirimet said.

“Data centres in India require renewable power supply,” he said, adding that the campaigns aimed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions play a key role in determining what fuels should be used to produce electricity for computer server farms.

“If our study proves feasible, we will then consider entering the data centre ecosystem,” said Mr Sirimet.

In Thailand, GPSC is eager to join the state’s direct power purchase agreement (PPA) scheme, which enables data centre operators to directly purchase electricity from power firms.

Several data centre operators have contacted GPSC, expressing an interest in purchasing clean power from the company, he said.

The Energy Regulatory Commission earlier announced that the authorities plan to launch a pilot direct PPA scheme, with a total power generation capacity of 2 gigawatts, by December 2025.

Former Thai police chief accused of taking bribes

The Police Complaints Review Board (PCRB) has reportedly found grounds to accuse former national police chief Torsak Sukvimol and more than 200 other officers of disciplinary offences linked to bribes from online gambling networks.

A source said the finding followed a seven-month investigation prompted by a complaint filed by lawyer Sittra Biabungkerd in March 2024. Mr Sittra, who had developed a high profile as a crusader, was himself charged with fraud a few months later.

The PCRB gathered evidence and documents from multiple agencies before concluding on Wednesday that there were sufficient grounds to pursue misconduct cases, the source said.

No direct money trail to Pol Gen Torsak’s personal accounts was found, though some funds were linked to temple donations, the person added.

The accused will be given an opportunity to present explanations before penalties are decided, he said.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission is also looking into bribery allegations against Pol Gen Torsak.

Pol Gen Torsak served as national police chief from October 2023 until his retirement on Sept 30, 2024. The months leading up to his retirement were marked by a bitter feud with one of his deputies, Pol Gen Surachate ‘Big Joke’ Hakparn.

The two accused each other of having links to online gamblers, and Pol Gen Surachate was ultimately dismissed from the force without a pension. He continues to pursue legal cases against the police department.
