The global music community is in mourning following the death of acclaimed R&B singer D’Angelo, whose soulful voice and artistry reshaped modern soul music.

On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the family of the artist—born Michael Archer—confirmed that he had passed away after a private battle with cancer.

He was 51 years old.

In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed profound sadness, saying, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”

Soon after news of his death broke, tributes began pouring in from fans and fellow musicians who had been inspired by his work and spirit.

Among the first to react was legendary producer DJ Premier, who shared a deeply emotional message on X (formerly Twitter).

“Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’. Love you KING,” Premier wrote, adding a salute and dove emoji to symbolize peace.

DJ Premier and D’Angelo had previously collaborated on the classic 2000 track “Devil’s Pie,” which appeared on D’Angelo’s groundbreaking second studio album, Voodoo.

The album featured other standout hits such as “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and “Left & Right” featuring Method Man and Redman, solidifying D’Angelo’s place as a master of neo-soul.

Voodoo served as the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut album Brown Sugar, which had spent over a year on the Billboard 200 chart.

Brown Sugar earned multiple Grammy nominations, including Best R&B Album, and was certified platinum within its first year, cementing D’Angelo’s status as a defining voice of his generation.

Younger artists also joined in paying tribute to the fallen icon, acknowledging his influence on their music and artistry.

Tyler, The Creator posted a photo of D’Angelo to his X account, while fellow artist Chuck Inglish shared an emotional note calling him “the greatest to ever do it.”

“Damn dog. What a terrible way to start the day,” Inglish wrote. “Safe travels to one of the greatest ever to do it. Let me gon head listen to Voodoo and cry that out. Long Live D’Angelo.”

Jill Scott, The Alchemist, and Flavor Flav were among other artists who shared messages of remembrance and gratitude for D’Angelo’s profound musical impact.

Though D’Angelo never married, he leaves behind three children—one son with the late singer Angie Stone, born in 1998, a daughter born in 1999, and another son born in 2010.

His passing marks the end of an era for soul music, but his voice, artistry, and revolutionary sound will continue to influence generations to come.

Upon ascending to power, President Mutharika has recently issued an executive order that some public institutions should be relocated from Lilongwe back to Blantyre thereby reversing former president Chakwera’s decree. This serves as a reminder that the more things change, they more they become the same.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is among the impacted public organizations. Its staff, who moved from Blantyre to Lilongwe five years ago, are now required to return to Blantyre.

However, pertinent questions arise, who really benefits from this tug of war? What are the recuperations of relocating government offices?

For starters, centrally locating public institutions can reduce travel times for employees, stakeholders, and the public, making it easier for people from different regions to access the institution.

For example, during elections, it is quicker to transport elections results from Chitipa to the Malawi Electoral Commission in Lilongwe than if it were located in Blantyre.

It is argued that a central location can facilitate better collaboration among various public institutions, agencies, and organizations, fostering partnerships and joint initiatives.

Being centrally located can make it easier for citizens to engage with public institutions, attend meetings, and participate in decision-making processes.

Relocating major government institutions to Lilongwe has a potential to promote a more inclusive environment that reflects the diverse cultures and communities of the entire country, enhancing the institution’s relevance and responsiveness.

However, relocating public institutions from one district to another has several negative implications too.

In the first place, the relocation process can disrupt ongoing operations, leading to temporary inefficiencies and a loss of productivity as staff adjust to new environments and processes.

Additionally, employees may face difficulties in relocating, including the need to sell homes, find new housing, and adjust to a new community, which can lead to dissatisfaction and turnover.

Moreover, the costs associated with moving, including logistics, new office space, and potential severance for employees who do not relocate, can be significant and strain budgets.

For instance, when the ex-president ordered the relocation of certain offices from Blantyre to Lilongwe, it was revealed that their own buildings in Blantyre were left vacant while they moved into rented buildings in Lilongwe. This proved to be a costly decision.

Furthermore, stakeholders, including local communities, businesses, and service providers in the original location, may be negatively affected, leading to potential backlash and loss of support.

Moving to a new location can result in a cultural shift within the organization, which may not align with the values and practices of the original headquarters, leading to internal conflict.

In conclusion, although moving public institutions was a key pledge of APM’s campaign, it is wise to carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a relocation.

Airport Reception to Welcome UN Youth Leader and SDG Advocate

Lilongwe, Malawi — 14 Oct 2025— Global recording artist, UN Youth Leader, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) advocate AY Young will arrive at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe from Nairobi to kick off the launch of Battery Tour MALAWI!

AY will be greeted with a special airport reception hosted by Freshwater Project International, featuring performances and warm welcomes from the CHAMBO Scout Troop and the Burning Fire Scout Troop from Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a somber display of diplomatic engagement and humanitarian concern, officials from the Malawi Mission in South Africa, led by High Commissioner Stella Ndau, visited the site of the devastating bus accident in Limpopo that claimed the lives of 42 people.

The Malawi delegation was joined by South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi, in a show of solidarity and support for the victims and their families.

The bus, which was traveling from the Eastern Cape to Harare, Zimbabwe, carrying both Malawian and Zimbabwean passengers, met its fate on a treacherous stretch of road in Limpopo.

According to eyewitness accounts, the bus lost control on a steep section of the road, rolled several times, and plunged into an embankment, resulting in one of the most horrific road accidents in recent memory.

During their visit, the Malawi Mission officials interacted with four Malawian nationals who were involved in the accident.

One of the nationals was admitted to the hospital, while three had been discharged.

The team took the opportunity to assess the situation and provide support to those affected.

The Malawi Mission report on the accident paints a grim picture of the incident.

According to the report, 42 people lost their lives in the tragic accident, including 18 women, 17 men, and seven children, among them a 10-month-old baby.

Forty-one people sustained serious injuries and were admitted to three separate hospitals in Limpopo, with 11 having since been discharged.

The Mission noted that determining the exact number of casualties by nationality will take some time and will require thorough identification and forensic analysis.

The team, however, assured that they will remain on the ground until all necessary processes are completed, ensuring that the dignity of the deceased is respected and the needs of the survivors are met.

High Commissioner Stella Ndau expressed her condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing the Malawi government’s commitment to supporting those affected by the tragedy.

She also thanked the South African authorities for their prompt response to the accident and their assistance to the survivors.

The visit by the Malawi Mission officials to the accident site was a demonstration of the government’s commitment to its citizens, even those living abroad.

It also highlights the importance of cooperation between nations in times of crisis.

As the process of identifying the victims and repatriating the deceased begins, the Malawi government has assured that it will do everything possible to support the families of those affected.

The accident has sent shockwaves across Southern Africa, with many leaders and citizens expressing their condolences to the families of the victims.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Ethanol Company Limited (EthCo) has stepped up its support for the development of women’s golf in Malawi with an increased sponsorship package of K18 million for the EthCo Inter-club ladies golf tournament, up from K15 million last year.

The announcement was made ahead of this year’s EthCo Interclub Golf Challenge (Crocodile Team Challenge) and Malawi Ladies Closed Tournament, set for October 18 to 19, at the Blantyre Sports Club.

Speaking during the sponsorship announcement, EthCo Chief Executive Officer Lusubilo Chakaniza, said the company’s continued support reflects its dedication to empowering women through sports.

“This year’s sponsorship has increased to K18 million, up from K15 million last year. This reflects EthCo’s continued commitment to supporting the growth of women’s golf in Malawi and strengthening our partnership with the Ladies Golf Union of Malawi (LGUM),” said Chakaniza.

She further highlighted that the company is also using the event to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness month, aligning with EthCo’s broader commitment to women’s health and empowerment.

“Since this is a ladies’ tournament, EthCo has decided to also use the event as an opportunity to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We believe this platform provides the perfect occasion to celebrate women’s strength both on and off the course. So, as we recognise the top golfers, we will also be commemorating this important cause,” said Chakaniza.

In her remarks, LGUM President Ulemu Luhanga expressed gratitude to EthCo for its continued partnership, describing the sponsorship as a testament to the company’s belief in the potential of women golfers.

Luhanga revealed that this year’s tournament has attracted a record 70 registered lady golfers from across the country, signalling the growing popularity of the sport.

“It is that time of the year again when we invite all lady golfers in Malawi to battle it out in a two-in-one tournament — the EthCo Interclub Golf Challenge (Crocodile Team Challenge) and the Malawi Ladies Closed (individual tournament),” said Luhanga.

She explained that the tournament will feature several divisions based on handicaps, including Champ (0–18), A Division (19–24), B Division (25–30), Seniors (50 years and above), and Juniors (below 18 years). Participating golf clubs include Blantyre, Limbe, Kasasa, Dwangwa, and Lilongwe.

Luhanga also acknowledged Nchalo Ladies, the defending champions who won the Crocodile Floating Trophy last year from Blantyre Sports Club Ladies at Lilongwe Golf Club.

“Our sponsor EthCo has done it again by sponsoring us with a thrilling K18 million package for this great mother tournament for the ladies. We are very grateful and do appreciate their gesture, and we pray for greater success for this amazing company led by our own lady golfer, Lusubilo Chakaniza,” said Luhanga.
