LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Information, Communication and Technology, Shadric Namalomba, says the second week of the ongoing parliamentary session has demonstrated Parliament’s increasing commitment to accountability and solution-oriented dialogue, as legislators and ministers engaged on several pressing national concerns.

Briefing journalists on Friday at Parliament after the week’s adjournment, Namalomba noted that ministries delivered essential updates on issues affecting Malawians, including fuel shortages, persistent power blackouts, food security, the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), economic hardships, and the confirmation process for the new Inspector General of Police.

“Throughout the week, at least four ministers presented key updates on matters such as fertiliser availability, fuel supply, and the status of the CDF.

“The discussions centred on identifying practical solutions because these issues directly influence government operations and the wellbeing of citizens,” said Namalomba.

The minister emphasised that government remains committed to long-term national development, guided by the Malawi 2063 vision and aligned with ongoing programmes across administrations.

“Development is a continuous process. It does not matter which administration initiated particular projects. Our duty is to build on what is already in motion to move this country forward,” he said.

On his part,Leader of the Opposition(LoP ), Simplex Chithyola Banda, echoed Namalomba’s assessment, noting that the week was marked by substantive debates on key national concerns highlighted by President Peter Mutharika during the opening of the 52nd Session of Parliament.

“In the general debates, members raised issues affecting their constituencies in response to the President’s address.

“We also received important ministerial statements from the Ministers of Energy, Transport, and Local Government,” he said.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has dismissed circulating allegations suggesting that the organisation is working in collaboration with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), describing the rumours as baseless and harmful to its reputation.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Lilongwe, HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa emphasised that the coalition remains an independent watchdog whose mandate is to defend human rights without aligning itself with any ruling or opposition political party.

Kaiyatsa expressed concern over claims that the HRDC is planning to stage violent protests aimed at undermining the newly elected Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration.

He clarified that the HRDC does not mobilise demonstrations arbitrarily or without legitimate grounds, and he stressed that the coalition follows due process whenever it calls for public action.

He further warned that the increasing spread of false information about the organisation—particularly on social media platforms—is not only damaging HRDC’s long-standing record but is also instilling fear among many of its members across the country.

According to Kaiyatsa, the misinformation appears to be a deliberate effort by certain groups to tarnish the coalition’s credibility and weaken public trust.

In response to the growing challenges faced by human rights defenders in Malawi, Kaiyatsa announced the launch of a new programme under HRDC aimed at providing protection and support for activists who experience threats, intimidation, or legal challenges in the course of their work. He explained that the initiative will offer assistance in areas such as personal security, legal aid, and advocacy, ensuring that defenders are not left vulnerable as they carry out their duties.

The HRDC leadership reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights for all Malawians, urging the public to disregard misleading narratives and continue engaging constructively in the country’s democratic processes.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s bandleader Cleto Escobedo III’s cause of death has been revealed after his death at age 59.

Escobedo died from “cardiogenic shock as the immediate cause of death with vasodilatory shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation and alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver as the underlying causes,” according to the musician’s death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ on Friday, November 14.

Sepsis, graft versus host disease, immunosuppression, chronic kidney disease and pneumonia also contributed to Escobedo’s death, per the outlet.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! did not air a new episode on Thursday, November 6, days before Kimmel confirmed Escobedo’s death.

“Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician and man, my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III,” Kimmel, 57, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, November 11. “To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement.”

The talk show host noted that he and Escobedo III “have been inseparable” since he was 9 years old.

“The fact that we got to work together every day is a dream neither of us could ever have imagined would come true,” Kimmel concluded. “Cherish your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, children and parents in your prayers.”

During Tuesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel broke down in his emotional monologue as he paid tribute to Escobedo.

Kimmel noted he’s “had to do some hard monologues” over the past two decades but explained, “this one’s the hardest, because late last night, early this morning, we lost someone very special who was much too young to go.”

Sharing that everyone at the show was “devastated” by the loss, Kimmel also paid tribute to Escobedo’s widow, Lori, and their two children,

“It’s just not fair,” he said. “He was the nicest, most humble, kind and always funny person.”

Kimmel added, “Cherish your friends. We’re not here forever.”

Paula Abdul, 63, was among the celebrities to also pay tribute to Escobedo.

He formed Cleto and the Cletones in 1995 with guitarist Toshi Yangagi, bassist Jimmy Earl, keyboard player Jeff Babko and drummer Jonathan Dresel. His father, Cleto Escobedo Jr., later joined the group after playing saxophone in a 1960s rock and soul band.

Three Wisest Men marks the final Hallmark movie in the holiday trilogy — but star Andrew Walker teased it’s not the last time fans will see him and his film brothers Tyler Hynes and Paul Campbell.

“I want to keep working with this group forever,” Walker, 46, exclusively told Us Weekly on Thursday, November 13, adding that writers Campbell, 46, and Kimberley Sustad are already working on getting the gang back together ahead of Hallmark’s Three Wisest Men premiere.

“That’s the reason why we were saying we should shut down the Wise Men franchise sooner than later,” Walker added.

The actor, who plays eldest brother Luke Brenner in all three holiday films, noted that the Wise Men trilogy was “such a good thing” that you “don’t want to play out a good thing and have people have too much of it.”

“There’s a few other ideas, but I don’t want to spoil it, because Paul and Kim are working on those things,” he confirmed.

For many years, clubs in Malawi’s top-flight league have depended heavily on gate collections as a major source of revenue.

Yet, despite the passion of local supporters and the strong turnouts at stadiums, the money collected at the gates often fails to match the number of fans who actually enter.

This long-standing problem continues to frustrate club administrators and weaken football development in the country.

One of the biggest culprits behind this revenue loss is the circulation of fake tickets.

On matchdays, it isn’t uncommon to find people entering stadiums with forged tickets that look exactly like the originals.

This raises serious concerns about how these counterfeits are produced and who is behind the operation.

The worrying part is that these fake tickets are not the work of amateurs. They are expertly printed to match the official ones, which suggests the involvement of people with inside knowledge.

It is highly likely that some individuals within the official ticket-printing system are secretly benefiting from illegal ticket reproduction.

To understand the situation better, we spoke to a young man whom we will call John to protect his identity who was selling fake tickets near Shoprite close to Kamuzu Stadium.

He openly admitted that the tickets were supplied by his boss, although he refused to disclose the name. His refusal to reveal identities shows how deep and organized the scheme may be.

John’s comments indicate that the counterfeit business is not random but a structured network involving people who know they can exploit weaknesses in the system. As long as there are opportunities for illegal profit, such activities will continue to affect gate revenue.

Another major challenge is the outdated and insecure manual ticketing system that most clubs still rely on. These paper tickets are easy to duplicate, easy to manipulate and easy to sell outside proper channels.

As long as clubs continue using them counterfeits will remain a problem.

The most practical and effective solution is the adoption of E-ticketing. Electronic tickets are harder to fake, allow real-time monitoring and reduce the chances of fraud at the gate.

Many countries have already made the shift and Malawi cannot afford to be left behind.

E-ticketing would also help clubs track their revenue more accurately. With digital systems, there is clear accountability, fewer loopholes and better control over the entire matchday process. This could transform club finances and boost player welfare.

Another issue affecting gate revenue is the pricing difference between presale tickets and matchday tickets. Presale tickets are often significantly cheaper, which encourages many supporters to buy them early.

However, this creates opportunities for manipulation, especially if presale records are not properly monitored.

If all tickets were placed at the same price or if the price gap was reduced, it would help stabilize revenue. Equal pricing would also discourage people from taking advantage of loose presale systems that are vulnerable to abuse.

Stadium security is another major concern. During matches, some fans climb fences to enter for free, while others slip in through gates with the help of familiar security personnel. Every person who enters the stadium without paying contributes to massive revenue loss.

These actions not only deny clubs the money they desperately need but also create safety problems. Overcrowding, poor crowd control and uncontrolled access can lead to serious incidents during big matches.

Football clubs rely on ticket sales to pay players, manage operations and support youth development. When revenue is lost, the entire football ecosystem suffers from the players to the supporters who want to see their teams progress.

If Malawi wants to see its football grow, compete and become more professional, then ticketing reform is not optional. It is a necessity that must be implemented urgently and decisively.

….Tractors, planters, and other equipment to support mega farmers nationwide

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Agriculture, Roza Fatch Mbilizi, on Friday received a donation of farm machinery from the Republic of South Korea at the Chipoka Demonstration Centre in Salima.

The donation, valued at US$500,000, includes five tractors, one grain drier, three hallows, and two maize planters.

According to officials, the equipment will be distributed to Agricultural Development Divisions (ADDs) across the country to be hired out to mega farmers, boosting large-scale farming and improving productivity.

This is not the first time South Korea has supported Malawi’s agricultural sector, having made a similar donation in March 2025.

Minister Mbilizi expressed appreciation for the continued partnership, saying the machinery will help strengthen Malawi’s agricultural development and enhance food security.

Officials noted that the initiative is part of efforts to modernise farming, increase mechanisation, and support farmers in achieving higher yields.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A coalition of faith-based organizations, the Religious Leaders Network for Choice, has hailed a recent High Court ruling allowing minors who are victims of sexual assault to access safe abortion services.

The October 2025 ruling acknowledges the severe psychological trauma faced by young girls forced to carry pregnancies resulting from rape, incest, or defilement.

Cliff Nyekanyeka, the organization’s national coordinator, emphasized that the ruling aligns with faith traditions that accept abortion on therapeutic, eugenic, rape, and incest grounds.

“This ruling represents a compassionate approach to protecting vulnerable individuals,” Nyekanyeka said.

Mateyu Sisya, legal advisor for the network, has urged the Attorney General to push for swift implementation of the ruling and advocate for new policies supporting sexual assault victims.

The organization stresses that the court’s decision doesn’t contradict religious principles but rather prioritizes the well-being of those affected.

The ruling has sparked intense debate, with some religious leaders warning against what they see as a potential erosion of Malawi’s moral values.
