This past Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the world paused from regular tasks and other to-dos to celebrate veterans. A very necessary thing to do, especially the whole world twice went to war to stop various actions of a few countries that threatened the world order. According to history analysts, both wars (known as World War I and World War II were influenced by complex political and social factors. The causes of World War I were militarism (the arms race throughout Europe), imperialism, and nationalism. The causes of World War II were the Treaty of Versailles, the rise of totalitarian regimes, and aggressive expansionism. At the helm of these tendencies that brought the world to war were Germany, Italy and Japan. From 1939 to 1945, the Western Allies fought with Germany, Italy in Europe, and Japan (who on December 7, 1941 attacked Pearl Harbor).

During World War I, the casualties of the major conflict, the record for the military and civilians was about 40 million. The estimates range from around 15 to 22 million deaths and about 23 million wounded military personnel, ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. An estimated 70–85 million deaths were caused by the conflict, representing about 3% of the estimated global population of 2.3 billion in 1940. Of these, 30 million were military and 40 million were civilians.

This is a lot of people. And pausing to celebrate our men in uniform is the proper thing to do, amidst parades and laying of wreaths at the toms of the unknown soldier, the global tradition of commemorating annual Veterans’ Day on November 11, gives civilians around the whole world reflection points that should end in gratitude as well as contributing to keeping the peace in our countries.

I close with my own personal commemoration of members of my family who have either served or still in active duty.

1. My youngest son Moses is clocking 20 years next year in the British Army. He has been decorated 3 times by Queen Elizabeth II and once by King Charles  (celebrating the Coronation). Moses’ love for sports drew him to join the British Army and has been sent on missions to European and Asian countries as well as South American ones. He was recently in the Falklands, and last month to Peru. 
2. My cousin Tennyson Chikankheni Jr, retired from active service after close to 15 years of service in the Malawi Defense Force. 
3. My maternal Uncle Tennyson Chikankheni Sr., through whom I learned how to spell Timbuktu at a young age, served in the British Army. Timbuktu was one of the places he was sent on a mission during World War II. He was in the British in the King’s African Rifles (KAR). Timbuktu is a city in Mali and is historically an important trading post and center of Islamic Culture in Ancient West African history records.
4. Another uncle is my Uncle Lemson Chanthunya (he was married to my father’s sister, Aunt Diana) he fought and was my maternal Uncle Tennyson, also a member of the KAR during World War II. 
5. Another KAR military uncle was my father’s cousin, former Traditional Court Justice, Uncle Steven Phombeya. He is the third member of my family to have served in the KAR.

Malawi and indeed many African countries have a lot to celebrate on this day called Veterans’ Day. Many Malawians joined in the effort to end the tyranny brought by aggressive nations. Malawi has played its part in keeping the peace. It continues to do so in African Peace Missions sent by the United Nations. Malawi has sent troops to the DRC and other countries in Africa.

Lest we forget. Thanks be to all our men in uniform. Thank you for your service.

The concept of a relaxing offseason is a foreign one to Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts. 

After Betts, 33, and the Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in a thrilling Game 7 to win their second-consecutive World Series on November 1, the 8-time All-Star has been a man on the move. 

Betts spoke exclusively to Us Weekly on Thursday, November 13, just hours before he hit the stage in Las Vegas to cohost the 2025 MLB Awards with comedian Roy Wood Jr..

“I’m chilling, man,” Betts said. “I’m winging it. I didn’t ask for any help or anything.”

The show went off without a hitch, which saw Betts’ teammate Shohei Ohtani take home his second straight National League MVP Award. 

After Betts and Ohtani, 31, won the World Series earlier this month, Betts said he immediately put on his other hat. 

“You jump straight into being a Dad,” said Betts, who shares daughter Kynlee, 7, and son Kaj, 2, with his wife, Brianna Betts. “Not that you weren’t that before, but I’ve played a little golf and got to hang out with the fam. We went to Disneyland to celebrate my little girl’s birthday.”

Mookie, who has a private bowling alley inside his house, also said, “I bowl pretty much every day.”

This year’s World Series win marked the fourth of Mookie’s career — he also won in 2018 with the Boston Red Sox and in 2020 with the Dodgers — but explained that the victories keep getting sweeter as he’s able to share them with his family.

“My son loves sports now and he’s starting to get really into it,” Mookie said. “My daughter doesn’t really like sports that much, but she loves the glitz and the glamour. She loves being around all of the attention going on. We have an interesting dynamic on how this thing works. It’s a beautiful thing.”

The Dodgers’ World Series celebration and parade were the stuff of legend, with superstar first baseman Freddie Freeman doing the worm at a team party — which was captured by Mookie — and Kiké Hernández trolling Drake, a Blue Jays fan, in front of tens of thousands of Dodgers fans at Dodger Stadium. 

One player who the Dodgers couldn’t convince to come out of his shell, however, was Ohtani. 

“I don’t know that you can,” Mookie admitted. “I think he’s always someone that’s chill, kind of sits back. He gets so much attention, he probably doesn’t want any more attention. He usually just sits back and chills and lets us do our thing.”

Throughout the season, Mookie was candid about his problems at the plate, which coincided with a mystery illness that caused him to lose 25 pounds earlier this year.

In navigating through his own ups-and-downs, Betts hopes to be an example for others facing their own challenges. 

“Everybody is going to struggle,” Mookie said. “You’re going to struggle, there’s no way around it. Life is really just about who gets through those struggles the fastest. I think you just have to be prepared for the next moment. You have to be mentally be ready for the next moment. What that looks like for you is special to you.”

Betts added, “When you go through your downs, it’s OK to be sad. That’s a valid emotion to have.”

Eddie Murphy has welcomed 10 children over the years — and he’s spoken highly about each member of his blended brood.

“My kids are the center of everything. Once you have kids, it’s all about them,” he said in his November 2025 Netflix documentary, Being Eddie.

Murphy is a dad to eldest son Eric with ex-girlfriend Paulette McNeely, daughters Bria, Shayne, Zola and Bella and son Myles with ex-wife Nicole Mitchell Murphy, son Christian with ex-girlfriend Tamara Hood and daughter Angel with ex-girlfriend Mel B. He also shares daughter Izzy and youngest son Max with wife Paige Butcher.

Murphy is also a grandfather, as Myles and wife Carly Fink share two daughters. Meanwhile, Bria revealed in November 2025 that she’s expecting baby No. 1 with husband Michael Xavier.

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-Political analyst Robert Chabinga has raised concerns over the timing of political activities in Zambia following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, warning that party ambitions should not overshadow national mourning.

Lungu, who served as Zambia’s president from 2015 to 2021, passed away recently while receiving medical treatment in South Africa.

His death has plunged the nation into mourning, with many Zambians reflecting on his contributions to the country’s political and social landscape.

Chabinga expressed dismay that some political figures have already begun campaigning and organizing party activities, even before the burial arrangements for the late former head of state have been concluded.

“We cannot talk about holding a convention now before we bury our former head of state, Edgar Lungu,” Chabinga said.

He added that some individuals have “even run away, leaving the corpse in South Africa, to come and start campaigning here in Zambia.”

The remarks underscore ongoing debates over the proper balance between political planning and respect for national mourning.

Analysts say that rushing into party conventions could inflame tensions within political parties and among the public, especially given Lungu’s enduring influence in Zambian politics.

Political observers note that Lungu’s death could trigger a power struggle within the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and other political formations, as factions begin to position themselves for future leadership contests.

The timing of party conventions and nominations is now a sensitive issue, as political actors weigh the need to respect the mourning period while preparing for upcoming elections.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Gazette Media, a Media and Communication Consultancy firm has donated MK500,000 to the Football Journalists Association of Malawi (FJA) to support its Elective Annual General Meeting (EAGM) scheduled to take place in Salima from November 29-30, 2025.

Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony on Friday, Gazette Media Lead Consultant McDonald Chapalapata said they extended the support, noting that many of its clients are deeply involved in the growth of the sport in Malawi.

“When we received the request, we did not think twice. Supporting football journalism is supporting football itself. The discussions and capacity-building at the AGM ultimately improve the quality of coverage and the messages shared with the public. In turn, this benefits our clients, some of whom are into sports sponsorship especially football, and this strengthens the game overall,” said Chapalapata.

FJA President Deitrich Frederich thanked Gazette Media for the timely gesture, noting that the annual general meeting is crucial, not only for electing new leaders, but also for strengthening the professionalism and visibility of football reporting in the country.

“This donation marks the beginning of a meaningful relationship with Gazette Media. As journalists, we have a duty to promote football and to ensure that the partners who support the sport see value in their investment. We will continue to collaborate as key stakeholders to grow the game and encourage sponsors to remain committed,” said Frederich.

The AGM, which will bring together 80 football journalists from across the country, requires a total budget of K10 million for logistics, accommodation, and election-related activities.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Standard Bank Plc has called on government and key stakeholders to collaborate towards re-engineering Malawi’s agriculture to achieve food security and turn the country into an exporter of surplus grain to the region.

The bank’s Executive Head of Personal and Private Banking (PPB) Charity Mughogho made the call in Lilongwe on Friday during a donation of K200 million in response to President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s recent nationwide declaration of a State of Disaster on hunger.

“We all have a duty to re-imagine and re-invent our agriculture sector. It is the driver of food security, and food security is the stabilizer of our economy. If we can secure food, we will contain inflation and export the surplus grain to other countries and earn more forex,” she said.

Mughogho said Standard Bank, which boasts a long history of supporting agriculture dating back to 1969 when it was the first to bank tea and coffee planters in the Shire Highlands region, is well positioned to help Malawi achieve food security and re-organize her agriculture sector.

Mughogho called for increased investment in new farming methods that focus on climate-smart cultivation, irrigation, pest and drought-resistant seeds, and a diversification of diet from maize, the staple grain food.

“For our part as Standard Bank, we will continue to provide financing towards climate-smart agriculture, the use of renewable energy in farming, and help Malawi become an exporter of grain to the region and beyond.” he said.

The PPB Executive lead said the donation to the government through the Minister of Finance is in solidarity with President Mutharika’s economic and humanitarian development agenda.

“We stand in solidarity with the government, its agenciee and donors in this critical moment when some parts of the country are in dire need of food. This contribution reflects our commitment to corporate citizenship and reaffirms our resolve to collaborate in building a more resilient and food-secure nation,” she said.

Receiving the funds, Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha thanked Standard Bank Plc for responding to the President’s appeal for assistance and said the gesture underlined the bank’s commitment to partnership with government.

“Standard Bank Plc stands as a model of partnership and a true example of responsible banking, and genuine commitment to national development,” he said.

The Finance Minister said government needs K209.4 billion to scale up food relief efforts from an initial target of 11 districts to the rest of Malawi’s 28 districts.

“The current funding gap remains significant, and as a nation we must continue to mobilise resources with urgency and compassion,” he added.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Alliance One Tobacco (Malawi) Limited (AOTM) has donated medical supplies worth MK8.5 million to Nation Publications Limited (NPL) to support the Mother’s Fun Run (MFR) initiative.

The donation aims to improve maternal and neonatal health services in public health facilities.

The medical supplies include 10 stethoscopes, three nebulisers, a five-litre oxygen concentrator, blood pressure monitors, and defibrillators, which will be used at Kasungu District Hospital (KDH) and surrounding health facilities.

AOTM Corporate Affairs Manager Fran Malila reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the initiative, stating, “This reaffirms our commitment as a company to continue supporting the annual Mother’s Fun Run to improve maternal and neonatal health care in the country.”

NPL Business Development Manager Chimwemwe Jere praised AOTM’s dedication to advancing maternal and neonatal health outcomes, saying the donation demonstrates the company’s commitment to the cause.

The MFR initiative is NPL’s flagship safe motherhood campaign, aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Malawi.

LUSAKA-(MaraviPost)-The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has issued a strong condemnation of the violence that erupted in Chingola during a rally addressed by President Hakainde Hichilema.

In their statement, the bishops expressed deep concern over the scenes captured in a circulating video that showed a group of angry youths—believed to be small-scale miners—throwing stones toward the stage where the President was speaking.

They warned that such actions reflect a dangerous rise in political aggression and what they termed the resurgence of “cadreism,” a form of politically motivated mob conduct that Zambia has struggled with for years.

The bishops stressed that no form of grievance can justify hostility, violence, or attempts to disrupt public events.

They urged citizens to embrace peace, dialogue, and restraint, emphasizing that Zambia’s social and moral fabric depends on civility and non-violence.

At the same time, the ZCCB called on the police and other law-enforcement agencies to handle the matter with fairness and impartiality.

They cautioned against “selective justice,” noting that unequal application of the law fuels public mistrust and political tension.

With the 2026 general elections drawing closer, the bishops said the resurgence of politically linked violence is “deeply worrying” and urged political actors, supporters, and the general public to commit to peaceful engagement.

They reminded the nation that democracy can only thrive where freedom of expression, security, and respect for human dignity are upheld.
