….Civil society groups urge patience and unity as they criticize HRDC for unfairly attacking a new government barely a month in office, questioning its motives and moral authority.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Concerned Citizens of Malawi and the Centre for Democracy Watch (CEWAT) have issued a joint statement sharply criticizing the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), accusing the organization of losing its moral compass and serving political interests instead of the Malawian people.

In their statement dated Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the two groups expressed disappointment over what they termed HRDC’s “politically motivated” and “unfair” criticism of the newly elected government.

They argued that the coalition’s recent remarks were disconnected from the current realities facing the nation and showed a lack of understanding of the challenges inherent in rebuilding the country.

The groups noted that the government has been in office for barely a month, making it unreasonable to expect it to resolve Malawi’s deep-rooted social and economic problems within such a short period.

The groupings emphasized that the nation’s challenges — including unemployment, inflation, and governance reforms — require time, patience, and unity of purpose from all sectors of society.

“This is a time for all Malawians to work together, not to rush into criticism,” the statement read. The organizations urged citizens to remember the difficult journey Malawi has endured over the years and to focus on constructive dialogue rather than negativity.

The Concerned Citizens and CEWAT also questioned HRDC’s consistency and sincerity, highlighting what they described as the group’s selective silence during previous administrations.

According to the statement, HRDC failed to speak out during a period when Malawians were facing significant hardships, only to reemerge now with renewed criticism of a government that is still finding its footing.

“It is surprising that HRDC, which remained silent when citizens were suffering, is suddenly active and vocal now,” the groups stated. “Their pattern of engagement raises doubts about their motives and whether they are driven by genuine advocacy or political opportunism.”

The statement further accused HRDC leaders of betraying public trust by accepting government appointments after mobilizing citizens for change.

The groups said such actions undermined the credibility of HRDC’s advocacy and compromised its independence as a civil society organization.

“While HRDC’s message may seem valid in principle, they lack the moral authority to lecture the nation on accountability,” the statement added. “These are the same individuals who promised a better Malawi after regime change, yet when things worsened, they chose silence.”

The Concerned Citizens and CEWAT have therefore called on Malawians to remain calm and patient as the new administration begins its work.

They underscored that constructive criticism is essential in a democracy, but it must be fair, balanced, and free from political manipulation.

They also appealed to all civil society organizations to maintain independence and impartiality, warning against being used by political players or external interests.

The groupings stressed that true advocacy must be rooted in honesty and consistency, not opportunism or selective outrage.

“Malawi’s democracy can only grow through integrity, collaboration, and truthfulness—not through politically aligned activism,” the statement concluded. “It is time for HRDC to rediscover its purpose, act responsibly, and stand with the people—not above them.”

The statement was jointly signed by representatives of the Concerned Citizens of Malawi and the Centre for Democracy Watch (CEWAT), signaling a broader call within civil society for a reset in the tone and approach of national advocacy efforts.

Soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo is gearing up for one last shot at the FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese superstar, 40, confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will “definitely” be his last and that he would retire “soon” during an interview at the Tourise Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, November 11.

“I am enjoying the moment, but when I mean soon, it’s really soon,” he said, “because I give everything for football. I’m in the game for the last 25 years, I did everything, I have many records in the different scenarios in the clubs and also in the national team — I’m really proud. So let’s enjoy the moment and live the moment.”

The 2026 World Cup, which North America will host, will be Ronaldo’s sixth. Though he’s among the most accomplished players in the tournament’s history as the all-time leading World Cup goal scorer and the only men’s player to score a goal in five different World Cups, he is still seeking an elusive championship for his country. He helped lead Portugal to a fourth-place finish in 2006, his first appearance, but Portugal has not advanced past the quarterfinals since.

The Bachelor alum Shayne Lamas’ massive monthly support checks from her ex-husband, Nik Richie, are being drastically reduced, Us Weekly can exclusively report.

On October 3, Richie, 46, filed court documents revealing he reached a deal with Lamas, 40, over support.

Per the 2023 divorce settlement, Richie agreed to pay Lamas $12,500 a month in support. The breakdown was $7,500 per month in spousal support and another $5,000 in child support. (The exes wed on April 18, 2010, and split on April 20, 2021, after 11 years of marriage.

Richie and Lamas agreed to share joint legal and physical custody of their two children: Press, 13, and Lyon, 10.

In the new filing, Richie said he will now pay Lamas $4,200 per month in spousal support but his final payment will be on June 5, 2026.

Richie, represented by Richard Sullivan from the firm Sullivan Law and Associates, will continue to pay Lamas the $5,000 per month, $2,500 per kid, in child support until they reach 18.

A source close to Shayne told Us that Nik owed a low six-figure sum in back support, and she agreed to wipe it clean, and reduce his monthly support obligations, to help out her children’s father.

In response, Nik told Us, “I hired Richard Sullivan to modify my agreement because I was tired of Shayne Lamas living off me. I have given her millions and I was still on the hook for another five million over her lifetime. Now, I’m excited for her to get a job. And extremely happy with the result, it’s good business.”

Lamas filed for divorce on June 9, 2021, in Orange County Superior Court. Both parties agreed that “irreconcilable differences” have led to the marriage being unsaveable.

In a 2021 income and expense declaration, Lamas said she was not employed and had worked as a stay-at-home mom for the past 10 years. She said she believed Richie earned a six-figure per month salary.

Lamas listed that she had $5,616 in cash and bank accounts. She said her monthly expenses totaled $28,000. Her monthly bills included $4,800 on rent, $900 on healthcare costs, $2,000 on groceries, $1,300 on eating out, $500 on utilities, $150 for a cell phone, $500 on laundry and cleaning, $3,000 on clothes, $3,500 on entertainment, $1,500 on auto expenses, $500 on savings and investments and $8,940 on other payments. The other payments included five credit card bills and a car loan.

She said she sold a Rolex to pay her legal fees in the divorce. Shayne described enjoying a luxurious lifestyle while married to Richie.

Richie disputed the numbers presented by Lamas in court. He also scoffed at the claim she sold her Rolex to pay legal bills.

“Unless Shayne has another Rolex that I do not know about, I saw her with the Rolex watch just this last time that we had our children’s exchange point. I do not know what Rolex watch she sold in order to pay her attorney’s fees.”

The exes ended up reaching their settlement in 2023.

It was a no-brainer for Patricia Altschul to spend a good portion of her new memoir honoring her late butler, Michael Kelcourse.

“He was a family member,” Altschul, 84, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting her memoir, Eat, Drink, and Remarry: Memories from a Lifetime of Art, Class, and Southern Charm, released on Tuesday, November 11.

“He was the consummate professional, but we also felt like he was a member of our family,” she continued. “He lived here and was with us practically every day. Even on his days off, a lot of times, he wouldn’t want to go any place or do anything but come over and make dinner or play with the dogs.”

Altschul announced Kelcourse’s death in October 2024 with an emotional Instagram post. Kelcourse’s death came years after he suffered a rare acute spinal stroke in February 2021.

“He deserved to be memorialized, and I wanted to do that,” she told Us. “He was with me [for] 18 years. 18 years is a long time.”

Altschul recalled hiring Kelcourse in 2004, after the death of his former boss, who she described as “an ancient dowager who maintained an enormous estate” in New York.

“We met, and I liked everything about him,” she wrote, revealing that Kelcourse was her companion when she was looking at new properties, including Altschul’s iconic Charleston mansion. When Southern Charm premiered in 2014, Kelcourse became a breakout star.

“Michael became the resident expert on cocktails and everything domestic, and so many fans wrote to him for his housekeeping advice that we had to incorporate an ‘Ask Michael’ button on my website,” Altschul recalled.

She also made it clear that they never had a romantic relationship.

“I have trouble writing the words. Did I ever have a romantic relationship with Michael? No … God, no,” Altschul shared. “The relationship between an employer and a butler is completely professional and built on trust and mutual respect. Period. Please don’t ask again.”

All joking aside, Altschul got real when she recalled the morning that Kelcourse had his stroke in her book.

“As he fell to the floor, he pulled the phone down with him and managed to press the ‘All page’ button. ‘Call an ambulance,’ he said into the speaker. ‘I’m having a stroke,’” she wrote. “I was asleep upstairs but woke up when I heard his panicked voice and immediately dialed 911.”

Altschul’s son, Whitney Sudler-Smith, “raced” to Kelcourse’s room and “put a pillow under his head” until the ambulance arrived. The spinal cord stroke left him paralyzed.

“The news of his condition — and the terrible uncertainty of his future — was devastating,” she wrote.

Kelcourse moved to a full-time care facility in Florida to be “close to his family” in the years preceding his death.

“Wonderful, dedicated, kind, and exceptional-these were the words people used to describe Michael,” she wrote. “He was all that and so much more.”
