Bandits killed and abducted many residents of Zamfara on Friday evening.

They also blocked Mayanchi – Anka road in Zamfara where they carried out their enterprise.

One of the motorists that escaped the roadblock Malam Muhammad Ahmad said the bandits were heavily armed.

‘The bandits blocked us on the road and kidnapped many people, some of us scattered and ran into the bushes. Those that escaped among us were those that run into bushes where long crops were planted,’ Ahmad said.

‘My colleague Abubakar Lawali Sardauna was killed because he refused to be abducted saying that, he will not follow the bandits to the bush,’ he added.

Efforts to reach Zamfara Police spokesman, DSP Yazid Abubakar were not successful.

Copyright colloquium highlights importance of compliance for business sustainability

As part of activities marking the 2025 Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day, the Audio – Visual Rights Society of Nigeria (AVRS), in collaboration with NCC, WIPO, CISAC and MCSN recently hosted the Colloquium on Copyright Licensing for Public Performance.

Held at the UBEC Digital Centre, Abuja, the colloquium brought together regulators, rights holders, industry stakeholders, tourism operators, and members of the creative community to engage in a robust discussion on how copyright compliance can be repositioned as a strategic investment in business sustainability.

The event opened with a welcome address by the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Dr. John Asein, who emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between the government, creative industry operators, and collective management organisations to ensure effective licensing practices in Nigeria.

Delivering the keynote, DG, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) Chief Obi Asika stressed the centrality of music to business growth: ‘Music is not free – it’s fair trade. We are connected and cannot be separated. Music contributes directly to your business success, and it is time for fair compensation, as happens everywhere else in the world. Licensing is never expensive – it’s about getting everyone into the net so the system works for all.’

Hospitality and legal expert, Chief Samuel Alabi, highlighted challenges and solutions in copyright compliance: ‘It is rather unfortunate that many prospective licensees are still dilly-dallying with compliance. Such practices only lead to prohibitive tariffs and litigation costs.’

Special remarks were also delivered by Mr. Mahmood Ali-Balogun, Chairman of AVRS; Pupa Oritz Wiliki, Chairman of MCSN; Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB); and Mr. Richard Esewhaye Ovie, Acting Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA). The international dimension was underscored by the participation of Dr. Moody Oluwatobiloba, Director at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

The hospitality and tourism industry were represented by Mr. Emeka Ezekwesili, President of the Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA), and Dr. Aliyu Badaki, President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN).

From the Nollywood community, leading actors including Monalisa Chinda, Ejike Asiegbu, Makama Sani Muazu and Francis Duru lent their voices to the discussions, underscoring the importance of copyright compliance for the sustainability of Nigeria’s film and creative industries.

The Colloquium also featured two technical workshop sessions facilitated by intellectual property experts, Barrister Michael O. Akpan and Dr. Chinedu A. Chukwuji, who delivered practical insights on compliance and its business benefits.

In recognition of their immense contributions to advancing public performance compliance culture in Nigeria, plaques of appreciation were presented to the keynote and guest speakers, as well as to the workshop facilitators.

Signing of Ajanaku siblings delight Bosnian side

Bosnia and Herzegovina second tier of professional football side, Jedinstvo Bihac, have expressed delight over the signings of Nigerian brothers Damilola and Jomiloju Ajanaku.

The Ajanaku siblings were recently presented by the club competing in the First League of FBiH at a brief but vibrant signing ceremony held last Friday, 27th September.

The club’s president, Saša Smiljanic, explained that the decision to sign the siblings was based on their individual qualities and the rich footballing pedigree of Nigerian players.

‘We decided to sign the two brothers because we recognize the immense talent Nigeria continues to produce-legends like Jay-Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, and more recently, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who have both won African Footballer of the Year. We hope Damilola and Jomiloju can replicate that level of excellence, not only for our club but also for their national team,’ Smiljanic said.

He also urged the players to give their best in helping the club return to the Premier League, following its relegation in the 2007/2008 season.

The Ajanaku brothers expressed their gratitude to the club’s management for the opportunity and pledged to repay the trust placed in them.

‘We’re excited to join this historic club, the first football club in Bihac, founded around 1920. We’re confident we can contribute to the team’s journey back to the Premier League,’ said Damilola.

FG, Meta to settle $32.8 million data privacy sanction out of court

The Federal Government and Meta Platforms Inc., parent company of Facebook and Instagram, have agreed on an out-of-court settlement of a $32.8 million fine against the latter.

The fine was imposed on the Meta Platforms for alleged data privacy violations involving Nigerian users.

Lawyers to the two parties disclosed this yesterday before the judge, James Omotosho, of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) had in February, fined Meta $32.8 million for allegedly breaching Nigeria’s Data Protection Act.

The NDPC said the sanction followed a petition accusing the company of using Nigerians’ personal data for behavioural advertising without consent, failing to file its 2022 audit, transferring data abroad, and processing the information of non-users.

It later filed an ex parte motion in court to compel the company to comply with its orders.

However, Meta also sued NDPC, contending that the commission denied it a fair hearing in the $32.8 million award. Its lawyer, Gbolahan Elias, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), asked the court to void the orders.

But NDPC’s lawyer, Adeola Adedipe, also a SAN, urged the court to dismiss the suit, describing Meta’s filings as defective.

In a preliminary objection, the NDPC argued that Meta’s suit was ‘grossly incompetent’ and that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear it.

The commission claimed Meta failed to comply with rules guiding judicial review under Order 34 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2019.

After hearing both parties on 16 July, Mr Omotosho allowed Meta to pursue judicial review but refused to halt NDPC’s orders. He adjourned the matter until 3 October for a consolidated ruling on NDPC’s objection and Meta’s motion to amend its filings.

Settlement discussion

At the scheduled ruling, Meta’s lawyer, Fred Onwuobia, a SAN, urged the court to defer the ruling on the preliminary objection and the motion on notice to amend, saying the parties had ‘reached an advanced stage of settlement’.

He said settlement was the option both parties had resolved to take, highlighting that they were concerned the ruling could affect ongoing discussions. ‘The draft terms of settlement have been exchanged,’ he said, urging the court to grant an adjournment for a report of settlement.

Mr Adedipe confirmed Meta’s position and said that the ‘settlement discussions have advanced appreciably.’ He also urged the court to adjourn so they could return with settlement terms for adoption as a ‘consent judgement.’

Judge Omotosho said the court encouraged settlement and was ‘inclined not to deliver the ruling today.’ He adjourned until 31 October for either a ruling or adoption of the settlement terms.

NDPC’s orders and Meta’s response

The fine against Meta was part of efforts by the NDPC to enforce the Nigeria Data Protection Act, which President Bola Tinubu signed into law in June 2023.

The dispute began after the commission issued its Final Orders on 18 February and imposed a $32.8 million remedial fee and eight corrective directives over alleged violations of the law.

It explained that the decision followed a petition from the civil society group, the Personal Data Protection Awareness Initiative, which accused Meta of engaging in behavioural advertising on Facebook and Instagram without explicit consent from Nigerian users.

The NDPC accused Meta of processing data of non-users and failing to file its 2022 compliance audit. It also alleged the company transferred Nigerians’ personal data abroad without authorisation and processed sensitive information, including that of minors, for targeted advertising.

The commission ordered Meta to conduct a data processing impact assessment reflecting Nigeria’s privacy context, update privacy policies, seek express consent before behavioural advertising, and halt the transfer of personal data outside the country without approval.

But Meta rejected both the findings and the process that led to them.

Through a suit filed on 19 March, the company said the NDPC denied it a fair hearing and due process. Its lawyer, Mr Elias, asked the Federal High Court to quash the enforcement orders, arguing they breached Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Mr Adedipe opposed the suit and urged the court to dismiss it. He said Meta’s suit and the statements attached to its ex parte motion were inconsistent, making the case incompetent.

He also argued that Meta was attempting to introduce new prayers after the court had ruled on its ex parte application, an amendment not permitted under the rules of court.

In a similar action, the commission fined Multichoice Nigeria N766.2 million for breaching the same law. It found that the Pay-TV operator violated the privacy rights of subscribers and their friends who were not subscribers, and also carried out unauthorised cross-border transfers of Nigerians’ personal data.

My experience as a semiconductor researcher, by Ayinde

Oluwaseyi Ayinde is a PhD semiconductor researcher at the University of Arkansas, where he works at the cutting edge of chip technology and power electronics. From exploring new materials for faster and more efficient devices to designing practical systems for real-world applications, his research bridges the gap between scientific discovery and technological impact.

What sets Ayinde’s work apart is its relevance to some of the most urgent technological challenges of our time. As industries strive for faster computing, more reliable communication, and cleaner energy solutions, his projects combine technical depth with a clear sense of purpose and enabling breakthroughs that can ripple across fields from artificial intelligence to renewable power systems.

Looking ahead, Ayinde envisions his career as a bridge between discovery and application. By advancing semiconductor research while mentoring the next generation of engineers, he aims to help translate cutting-edge science into innovations that shape the way society works, connects, and grows. For him, research is not just about solving technical problems, but about contributing to progress that touches everyday life. Excerpts

Could you describe the specific area of semiconductor technology you are focusing on for your PhD, and what makes it interesting or challenging?

My PhD research focuses on semiconductors and Optoelectronics devices, in simple terms, the materials and technologies that make things like high-speed electronics, lasers and advanced sensors possible. Right now, I am working on ultra-thin layered semiconductors, with unique electrical and optical properties. These materials are exciting because they open new possibilities for making electronics so thin and light that they can bend or fit onto a sticker. I am also working on improving the design and performance of semiconductor power modules and novel materials for next-generation chips.

I chose this area because, semiconductors are literally the backbone of modern technology from smartphones to AI supercomputers, so every breakthrough in this field has ripple effects across all tech fields. The challenge is that we constantly push the limit of physics, shrinking devices to the nanoscale, and at the same time reduce energy loss and navigate complex fabrication processes. But that is also what makes it exciting because every breakthrough is a step closer to faster, smaller, more efficient and cost-effective technologies.

What innovative or novel techniques are you exploring to address a particular problem in semiconductor fabrication or design?

One technique I am currently pursuing is the growth and fabrication of devices from III-V semiconductors and nanomaterials. One of these is Rhenium disulfide ReS2 , an emerging layered semiconductors with unique anisotropic properties that could open new device possibilities, but the challenge lies in achieving controlled growth and translating that into functional devices. By attempting to fabricate and test devices directly from these nanocrystals, we are addressing that bottleneck head-on.

At the same time, I am combining experimental growth with advanced characterization and simulation tools. This dual approach allows me to not just test the devices we make, but to understand why they behave the way they do thereby bridging the gap between theoretical potential and practical performance. It’s that back-and-forth loop between growth, measurement, and modeling that makes this technique both innovative and effective in tackling the complexities of next-generation semiconductors

What do you envision as the potential real-world impact or applications of your PhD research in the semiconductor industry or society?

The potential impact of my PhD research spans both the semiconductor industry and society at large. On the industry side, my work with two-dimensional materials like ReS2 and TMDs could enable ultra-scaled, energy-efficient devices, which are critical for pushing beyond the limits of current silicon technology. Similarly, improving the design of next-generation chips can help meet the growing demands of high-performance computing, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. These same breakthroughs could translate into more efficient power conversion that reduces energy loss across the grid, or sensors that make medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring faster and more accessible. Ultimately, what excites me is that advances in semiconductors ripple outward, a new material or device concept in the lab today could power the tools that make societies healthier, cleaner, and more connected tomorrow

What are some of the most significant hurdles you’ve encountered in your research so far, and how have you approached overcoming them?

One of the most significant hurdles in my PhD journey has been growing high-quality crystals and fabricating reliable devices. This is tricky because even slight variations in conditions can alter the outcome. It demands patience, precision, and learning to embrace trial and error.

Another challenge has come from my Research Assistant Position at HiDEC, where I’m helping design and test semiconductor power modules. Here the hurdle is different: balancing high performance with low cost so that the modules are not only advanced, but also practical enough for students to learn from. It pushed me to think more creatively, sometimes the most valuable innovation is the one that can be built, tested, and taught.

Beyond the technical side, moving to the U.S. for my PhD also brought personal hurdles. Adjusting to a new academic culture, building a support network from scratch, and balancing intense research with personal growth has not always been easy. But just like in the lab, I learned to approach it step by step: leaning on mentors, collaborating widely, and staying connected to communities like National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

In the end, both challenges has transformed me into a more resilient and adaptable researcher.

In your opinion, what are the most significant emerging trends or technologies that will shape the future of the semiconductor industry in the next 5-10 years?

In the next decade, semiconductor research will be shaped by several converging forces.

First, as miniaturization of devices reaches physical and quantum limits, emerging materials and neuromorphic architectures will be needed to sustain performance.

Second, sustainability will drive greener fabrication methods, recyclable materials, and energy-efficient processes, aligning technological progress with global climate and resource goals.

Finally, AI and Machine Learning will speed up device design by replacing trial and error with data-driven optimization. Alongside these technical shifts, two broader forces will also play a role: the growing pressure for sustainable chip manufacturing as AI and cloud computing increase energy demands, and the drive for supply chain resilience, as nations push to secure local semiconductor production.

What strategies do you employ to stay updated on the rapid pace of innovation and advancements within the semiconductor field?

Semiconductors move so fast that staying updated is almost like having a second job.

I stay updated through three main strategies, First, I follow leading journals and conferences like IEEE, Nature Electronics, and major semiconductor symposia, to see the latest peer-reviewed work.

Second, I engage the community through seminars, collaborations and professional networks like NSBE, APS, which often highlight trends you won’t immediately find in publications.

Third, I balance academic updates with industry roadmaps from companies Intel, NVIDIA, AMD, testing newly realized concepts through my own modeling and simulations.

Most importantly, I maintain a curious, cross disciplinary mindset, which helps in correcting ideas.

How do you see your research connected with other areas, such as artificial intelligence, new materials, or quantum computing, in the context of semiconductor advancements?

My research connects with artificial intelligence, new materials, and quantum computing through functionality and integration.

On the materials side, the exploration of ReS2 and other TMDs, expands device architectures, enabling flexible platforms and sensors where silicon falls short.

For AI, I focus on hardware adaptations, such as bringing memory and logic closer together in neuromorphic layouts to improve speed and responsiveness at the edge. In quantum computing, advances in nanoscale fabrication and materials from semiconductor research provide the foundation for building and stabilizing devices. Overall, my work contributes to these intersections, turning materials and device innovations into platforms that other fields can build upon Looking ahead, I see the real opportunity in how semiconductor research links disciplines. My role is to contribute at those intersections by turning advances in materials and device design into platforms that AI, quantum, and other emerging fields can build upon.

Describe a complex technical problem you’ve faced in your research and the analytical steps you took to arrive at a solution.

In one experiment, I struggled to achieve uniform material quality, leading to unpredictability and deviation in expected device performance.

To solve this, I approached the problem step by step. First, I broke down the experimental parameters, temperature, growth rate, and substrate preparation. Then, I varied them systematically rather than changing everything at once. Concurrently, I employed spectroscopy and microscopy to map structural and electrical properties.

Cross-checking this feedback with simulations and literature helped identify the most sensitive variables and finetune them. At the same time, I adjusted the device design to tolerate minor variations, so the process became more robust overall.

This iterative approach turned an unreliable process into a consistent one that produces good results. This experience taught me that even the most technical challenges can be solved by breaking them into smaller parts, validating each step, and keeping an open, adaptive mindset

What communication strategies do you find most effective when collaborating with others on a research project, especially when faced with conflicting ideas

In collaborative research, I’ve found that the most effective strategy is to start by listening carefully to understand where each perspective is coming from. Often, conflicting ideas are not actually opposites but reflections of different priorities, for example, one person may focus on experimental feasibility while another emphasizes theoretical rigor.

I make it a point to restate others’ viewpoints clearly before presenting my own. This not only shows respect but also ensures we’re debating the same issue and not talking past each other. When there is disagreement, I encourage the use of data or small pilot experiments to ‘test’ ideas rather than relying on opinions alone thereby letting evidence guide the way forward.

Equally important is being transparent about goals and constraints, so that decisions are made in the context of what the team is trying to achieve. I also believe in framing the conversation positively: instead of asking ‘which idea is right,’ I ask ‘how can we integrate the strengths of both ideas into a better solution?’

By combining active listening, data-driven validation, and constructive framing, I have been able to turn potential conflicts into opportunities for stronger collaboration and more innovative outcomes

How do you approach and manage projects that involve a significant degree of uncertainty, such as those common in cutting-edge semiconductor research?

In cutting-edge semiconductor research, uncertainty is almost guaranteed, whether it is about material behavior, device performance, or scaling a process. I approach it by first breaking the project into smaller, testable steps. Instead of trying to solve everything at once, I identify the parameters with the highest uncertainty and design experiments to quickly probe those areas. This helps narrow down the unknowns and keeps the project moving forward.

I also rely on a mix of theory, simulation, and experimental feedback. Modeling gives me a framework of what should happen, experiments reveal what happens and comparing the two helps refine both the design and my understanding.

For example, in one project, the devices I fabricated showed inconsistent performance at the beginning, which made it hard to tell if the problem was with the material growth, the design, or the testing conditions. Rather than overhauling everything, I isolated each stage by first testing the growth parameters alone, then adjusting the device layout, and finally refining the measurement setup. That step-by-step breakdown not only revealed the source of the issue but also gave me a more reliable process moving forward.

Ultimately, I see uncertainty not as a barrier but as the space where innovation happens. By breaking problems down, testing strategically, and staying adaptive, I’ve been able to turn ambiguity into opportunities for discovery

I never said Buhari was linked to Boko Haram, Jonathan clarifies

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has refuted media reports claiming he accused the late former President Muhammadu Buhari of having ties with Boko Haram, describing the allegations as ‘false and misleading.’

In a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan clarified that his recent remarks at the launch of Scars – a book written by former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor (rtd) – were taken out of context.

He explained that he merely referenced a past incident in which Boko Haram named Buhari among individuals it wanted to represent them in peace talks, noting that this was part of the group’s deceptive tactics and not an indication of any connection between Buhari and the insurgents.

‘At no time did Dr. Jonathan suggest, imply, or insinuate that President Buhari had any connection with Boko Haram or that he supported the group in any form,’ the statement reads.

‘His remarks were made to illustrate the deviousness and manipulative strategies employed by Boko Haram in their early years.’

The former president emphasised that the mention of Buhari’s name by the insurgents was one of several false claims made by factions pretending to represent Boko Haram at the time.

‘Boko Haram often invoked the names of respected public figures to sow confusion, exploit political divisions, and undermine public confidence in government,’ Eze added.

Jonathan’s office further questioned why, if Buhari was truly the group’s chosen negotiator, Boko Haram did not end its violent campaign after he became president.

‘Dr. Jonathan recognises that President Muhammadu Buhari, like every patriotic Nigerian, stood firmly against terrorism and was himself a target of Boko Haram violence,’ the statement continued.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to disregard the misrepresentation, reaffirming his continued commitment to national peace, unity, and democratic stability.

Troops destroy 41 Illegal Refineries, foil oil theft in September – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said the troops of Operation Delta Safe have destroyed 41 illegal refining sites and foiled oil theft worth over ?112.1 million in the Niger Delta in September.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Kangye said the troops had maintained aggressive patrols and air reconnaissance to curb crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other forms of economic sabotage.

According to him,the troops had also recovered 49,321 litres of crude oil, 6,970 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 1,900 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) and 1,475 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from criminals during the period under review.

‘Troops also destroyed 41 illegal refining sites, 21 cooking ovens, 9 dugout pits, 11 storage tanks, seven boats and arrested several suspects involved in the illegal trade,’ he said.

Kangye added that troops dismantled multiple oil theft networks and seized equipment used for large-scale bunkering, including pumping machines, hoses, and generators.

He said the operations were carried out in Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States, with support from other security agencies.

The defence spokesman reaffirmed the military’s resolve to sustain its onslaught against crude oil theft, adding that the fight against economic saboteurs remains a national priority due to its direct impact on Nigeria’s economy and environmental safety.

He urged the host communities to support the security forces with timely information to help identify and disrupt oil theft networks operating in their areas.

‘Our operations will continue to target the sources, storage facilities, and transportation channels used by oil thieves until these criminal enterprises are completely dismantled,’ he said.

Over 100 CSOs, CBOs unite under Jigawa OGP to drive, boost transparency, openness in state, LG

No fewer than 100 registered Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) in Jigawa State have been consolidated under the Non-State Actors platform of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) to strengthen advocacy on inclusion, transparency and openness in government of state and local councils.

The move followed a general meeting convened by the newly formed OGP leadership in the state, led by Comrade Isah Mustapha, with the aim of repositioning the coalition and activating the third phase of the state’s OGP Action Plan.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Comrade Mustapha, who serves as the Non-State Actors co-chair, said the organisations agreed to collaborate around four key thematic areas: Fiscal Transparency and Accountability, Access to Justice, Climate Change, and Anti-Corruption.

‘The meeting was held in line with OGP’s principles of inclusion and transparency. We have begun the process of developing Jigawa State Action Plan III,’ he said.

According to him, invitations were sent via Google forms across various media platforms for interested organisations to register and select their preferred thematic areas.

‘As you can see, representatives of CSOs, CBOs, the private sector and the media are all here. Every organisation has equal opportunity to join, lead and contribute to the action plan. Since the OGP Step II leadership has ceased to exist, it became necessary to constitute a new and transparent leadership,’ he explained.

Comrade Mustapha said the platform has adopted an open-door policy to encourage participation, noting that registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the state or even a local government body is sufficient for membership.

He added that sensitisation sessions have been held on the principles and concepts of OGP at national and sub-national levels to help organisations align their interests with the agreed thematic areas.

‘The current leadership will not allow any interference. Members will abide by acceptable procedures and guidelines to form their leadership structures within the thematic areas,’ he stressed.

He revealed that while some thematic areas have one commitment, others may have two, depending on identified priorities.

‘Our plan is to revive Jigawa OGP and make it competitive at the international level. We also intend to establish strong OGP structures across the 27 local government councils to promote accountability, transparency and openness in governance,’ he stated.

Comrade Mustapha emphasised the need to monitor local government spending, contract awards and project implementation in light of financial autonomy at that tier of government.

He appealed to members for continued cooperation to position Jigawa as a model of inclusive governance and transparency in Nigeria and beyond under OGP Step III.

Four escape, one injured as tanker, tipper collide in Anambra

Four persons escaped death while one sustained serious injury in an auto crash along the ever-busy Awka-Onitsha highway.

The crash which occurred on Friday near Igbariam Junction, involved a diesel-laden tanker and a tipper truck.

Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Commander Bridget Asekhauno said the injured was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

She attributed the cause of the crash to loss of control by the tipper driver, which resulted in the heavy collision.

While sympathizing with the injured, Asekhauno, reminded motorists of the importance of road discipline, urging road users to remain vigilant and cooperate with officers to ensure safety on roads.

Gas turbines: Diri assures on 24 hour power as Bayelsa celebrates 29 years of statehood

Bayelsa Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said the procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine by his administration was a milestone worth celebrating by the state as it turned 29 on October 1, 2025.

Governor Diri also stated that when fully installed, it would not only guarantee 24-hour power supply in the state but would also create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Diri stated this in a statewide broadcast on the twin occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence and Bayelsa’s 29th statehood anniversary on October 1, 2025.

While congratulating Nigeria’s leader, President Bola Tinubu, as well as the people of the country and Bayelsa on the anniversary celebrations, Governor Diri expressed the hope of better days ahead.

According to him, his Assured Prosperity administration continues to progress with landmark projects, including the nine-storey state secretariat complex that would provide efficient administrative space for public servants.

Senator Diri equally stated that the ongoing construction of the 25,000-capacity stadium would foster youth development as the facility would inspire young people and showcase Bayelsa on a larger scale.

He said: ‘The recent arrival of the 60-megawatt gas turbines marks a major milestone and brings us much closer to reliable, round-the-clock power in our state. That development will reduce household expenses, attract investment, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

‘Work is also progressing well on other landmark projects. The nine-storey State Secretariat complex is advancing steadily and will provide modern, efficient administrative space for our public servants and the people they serve. To foster sports and youth development, we are building a 25,000-capacity, Olympic-standard stadium – a facility that will inspire our young people and showcase Bayelsa on the national and international stage.

On development in the education sector, he said the state had recorded significant progress in academic performance and infrastructure upgrade.

‘Our schools are improving. Recent NECO results have shown strong performances by our students, with Bayelsa among the top five states in Nigeria. To deepen pragmatic education, we have established science, technical and vocational colleges in every local government area.

‘The ones at Ayamasa, Ofoni, Swali, Sampou and Opume have been completed and functional while others are nearing completion in Brass, Igbeta-Ewoma and Oporoma.’
