Payment of rent only by electronic means, Cyprus Tax Department says
As of July 1, 2026, the payment of rent relating to immovable property in Cyprus must be made exclusively via bank transfer, or payment by debit or credit card, or any other recognised electronic means of payment, the Cyprus Tax Department said in a press release on Wednesday. The above obligation applies to all natural and legal persons, regardless of the amount of the rent and the type of use of the immovable property, it added. It stressed that any beneficiary of rent relating to immovable property in Cyprus should not accept the collection of such rent in any other manner, other than those specified above.

Inflation rises to 3.1% in June, driven by transport, housing and food prices

House prices in Cyprus continued to increase in the first quarter of 2026, with the House Price Index (HPI) rising by 3.4% on an annual basis and 1.6% compared with the previous quarter, according to preliminary estimates released on Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. Cyprus recorded a current account deficit of pound 1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026, based on non-calendar adjusted and non-seasonally adjusted data, according to figures published by Eurostat on Friday. During the same period, Cyprus posted a pound 1.2 billion surplus in its services account. According to Eurostat, Cyprus’ overall current account recorded a pound 1.0 billion deficit in the first quarter of 2025, followed by deficits of pound 0.4 billion in the second quarter, pound 0.1 billion in the third quarter and pound 0.8 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, before widening to pound 1.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026.

More than 5.5 million overnight stays were recorded in tourist accommodation in Cyprus in July and August 2025, according to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat on seasonality in the tourism sector. Based on Eurostat’s figures, overnight stays in Cyprus reached 2,627,725 in July and 2,953,148 in August, bringing the total for the two peak months to 5,580,873.

Bad cheques of a total value of pound 37,188 in June, says CBC
The number of bounced cheques issued in June 2026 recorded a slight increase compared to the same month last year, as 16 bounced cheques were issued, compared to 13, with a total value of pound 37,188, according to data published on Wednesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) regarding entries in the preliminary list of the Central Information Register (CIR) for issuers of bad cheques. Specifically, in June 2025, 13 bounced cheques with a total value of pound 28,296 were recorded, while in June 2024, 12 cheques with a total value of pound 13,048 were recorded.

Cyprus recorded the highest share in the European Union in terms of energy used by households for space cooling in 2024, according to data published on Wednesday by Eurostat. Based on the figures, the energy used by households in Cyprus for space cooling amounted to 1,925 terajoules in 2024, corresponding to 16.0% of households’ final energy consumption. Malta followed, with the corresponding share standing at 15.0%. Cyprus exports jump 58.9% in May, while trade deficit widens in first five months
Cyprus recorded a sharp increase in goods exports in May 2026, boosted in part by transfers of economic ownership of vessels, but a strong rise in imports led to a wider trade deficit during the first five months of the year, according to provisional data released Friday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. Total exports of goods reached pound 520.4 million in May 2026, up 58.9% from pound 327.6 million in the corresponding month of 2025. Industrial production in Cyprus remained unchanged in May 2026 on a monthly basis, following an increase of 0.1% in April. The government was sounded out about a possible visit by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to Cyprus around the end of July, relevant sources said, referring for official announcements to the Organisation. NPLs edge down to pound 830 mln in April, ratio remains at 1.6%
Total non-performing loans (NPLs) in Cyprus’ banking sector stood at pound 830 million at the end of April 2026, recording a marginal decline from pound 835 million in March, according to aggregate data published on Thursday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC). The NPL ratio remained unchanged at 1.6% of total loans. Total loans amounted to pound 51.04 billion, compared with pound 51.35 billion in March.

Cyprus records second-largest annual drop in government debt in the EU, Eurostat says
Cyprus’ gross government debt stood at 54.6% of GDP at the end of the first quarter of 2026, according to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat. According to Eurostat, Cyprus’ government debt amounted to pound 20.089 billion in the first quarter of 2026, compared with pound 20.078 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 and pound 21.790 billion in the first quarter of 2025.

The share of renewable energy sources in gross electricity consumption in Cyprus stood at 27.5% in 2025, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat. Based on Eurostat data, Cyprus is among the countries with the lowest shares of renewables in electricity consumption in the EU. Lower rates were recorded by Malta, with 11.2%, Czechia, with 19.2%, Luxembourg, with 23.3%, and Slovakia, with 24.1%.

According to ERC, the downward revision was driven by the slowdown in GDP growth during the first quarter of 2026 in both Cyprus and the euro area, as well as by negative developments in leading indicators during the period April-June, primarily related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. “These developments point to rising price pressures, easing labour demand in certain sectors, losses in business and consumer confidence, increased economic uncertainty, and tighter financing conditions,” ERC notes.

Tourism revenue down 16.5% in first five months of 2026, according to CYSTAT
Tourism revenue for the period January-May 2026 is estimated at pound 798.2 million, compared with pound 955.8 million during the corresponding period in 2025, representing a decrease of 16.5%, according to data published on Thursday by the Statistical Service. Although the first two months of the year recorded higher revenue than the corresponding months of last year, revenue has been lower since March, with the decline being less pronounced in May.
Industrial Production up 1.5% in first 5 months of 2026, according to CYSTAT
The Industrial Production Index recorded an increase of 1.5% for the period January – May 2026, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, according to data published on Thursday by the Statistical Service. Comparing the rates of change for the period January – May 2026 against the corresponding period of the previous year, the most significant positive changes were observed in water collection, treatment and supply (10.9%), electricity supply (6.2%), the manufacturing of basic metals and fabricated metal products (5.6%) and the manufacturing of wood and products of wood and cork, except furniture (3.2%).

The European Union wants to play a meaningful role in the UN-led process on the Cyprus issue and believes there is an opportunity to achieve significant progress in the coming months, the EU’s newly appointed Special Representative for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto, said on Friday after meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia. It is the first time the Executive Vice President of the European Commission pays a visit to Cyprus after he was designated Special Representative for Cyprus. The Central Bank of Cyprus (the ‘CBC’), introduces changes to the licensing process for Electronic Money Institutions and Payment Institutions, with effect from 3 August 2026, as part of the implementation of a comprehensive licensing and supervisory strategy. CBC: Shift towards fixed-rate lending reshapes Cyprus credit market
