Deputy Minister of Social Welfare to attend UN disability rights conference in New York

The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Clea Hadjistephanou-Papaellina, is travelling to New York to participate in the 19th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with Cyprus reaffirming its commitment to promoting the rights and equal participation of persons with disabilities, according to a statement issued by the Deputy Ministry on Saturday.

As noted, Cyprus’ participation in the Conference, held under the auspices of the United Nations in New York from 9 to 11 June 2026, takes place at a particularly significant moment, as 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a landmark international treaty promoting the rights, autonomy and full inclusion of persons with disabilities in all areas of life.

Within the framework of the Conference, Cyprus will organise a side event ahead of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, focusing on supported decision-making for persons with disabilities, with an emphasis on legislative reforms and international best practices that strengthen autonomy, dignity and social inclusion.

The Deputy Minister will also speak at a European Union side event and will deliver Cyprus’ national statement, reaffirming the country’s commitment to implementing the Convention and advancing inclusive policies.

In addition, she will hold a series of bilateral meetings with counterparts and representatives of international organisations, aiming to strengthen cooperation and exchange best practices on disability rights and social policy issues.
