Education Minister presents Cyprus actions at Informal EU Meeting in Dublin

Preparing citizens for the changes of new technologies was among the topics discussed at the Informal EU Education Ministers Meeting that took place in Dublin.

In a post on her social media accounts, the Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou says that at the Informal Meeting, Ministers discussed how basic skills can be strengthened and how they can prepare citizens for the changes brought about by new technologies, the green transition and the evolving needs of society and work.

In her interventions, the Minister says, she presented Cyprus’ actions, namely the continuous updating of curricula, the expansion of compulsory pre-primary education from the age of four, the strengthening of teachers’ professional learning and the digital transformation of schools.

Moreover, she said that the Ministry is strengthening professional orientation and expanding opportunities for technical and vocational education and lifelong learning.

The Minister said that special emphasis was placed on the responsible use of artificial intelligence, based on the policy document of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth that focuses on teachers, the rights and well-being of children.

This effort, she points out, is a continuation of the Council Conclusions on teachers in the era of AI, adopted during the Cyprus EU Presidency.

“The Cypriot government, through our policies and interventions, we are strengthening the very essential role of the EU in providing targeted support to Member States, with reliable data, common tools and know-how,” she says.

Concluding, the Minister says that the aim is to transform common priorities into better learning and meaningful opportunities for every person, at every stage of their life.
