House President – Greek Ambassador discuss Cyprus issue and parliamentary cooperation

Developments regarding the Cyprus issue and ways to further strengthen cooperation between the parliaments of Cyprus and Greece were at the centre of a meeting on Thursday between President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou and Greece’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Konstantinos Kollias.

According to an announcement by the House of Representatives, Kollias congratulated Demetriou on her re-election as House President.

Demetriou referred to her recent official visit to Athens, describing it as highly successful, and stressed that Greece remains Cyprus’ strongest supporter and ally in safeguarding its national interests and addressing common challenges.

She also briefed the Greek Ambassador on the outcome of her visit, while the two exchanged views on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue.

The meeting also focused on the outcome of Demetriou’s discussions with Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis regarding concrete ways to further enhance exchanges and coordination between the two parliaments.

According to the announcement, both sides underlined the added value of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing the strategic objectives of Cyprus and Greece.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
