Kontides wins silver in Ireland ahead of World Championship

Cyprus sailor Pavlos Kontides claimed the silver medal at a coaching regatta in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, the venue that will host the World Sailing Championships in August.

Kontides, who won his third European title last month, finished second with 45 penalty points in a highly competitive fleet featuring Olympic medallists and top sailors from several countries.

Britain’s Eliot Hanson secured first place with 39 points, while Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic finished third on 49 points.

The Cypriot sailor recorded four second-place and two third-place finishes across nine races.

Kontides said the event provided valuable experience, allowing him to familiarize himself with local conditions and train against a strong international field ahead of the World Championships.

The world number one in the ILCA7 class will now return briefly to Cyprus before travelling to Los Angeles for a training camp and two preparatory regattas ahead of the August competition.
