Medical Association denounces unlawful ‘recognition’ of pseudo-state organisations in European medical body

The Cyprus Medical Association (CyMA) has denounced, in the strongest and most unequivocal terms, the unlawful ‘recognition’ of trade union organisations from the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime, in Cyprus Turkish occupied areas, as purported representatives of Cyprus within a European medical body.

In a press release, it said that the case concerns the Fédération Européenne des Médecins Salariés (FEMS) [https://www.fems.net/], which has accepted within its ranks, on behalf of Cyprus, trade union organisations from the occupied areas, and has even displayed the “emblem” of the pseudo-state on its website.

It is noted that the Cyprus Medical Association does not participate in this European medical organisation, as a form of protest and to make absolutely clear its firm opposition to any distortion of international law and order.

“The recent circulation of a questionnaire by the same European medical body, in which Cyprus appeared as ‘Kibris’, has provided a new cause for protest by the Cyprus Medical Association, the Panhellenic Medical Association, and the Athens Medical Association. The CyMA has once again lodged a formal protest with the relevant European bodies, calling for the immediate restoration of international law and order,” the press release stressed.

In recent years, it said, there has been a systematic escalation of efforts by the pseudo-state to exploit international, scientific, and professional fora, with the aim of achieving the indirect recognition or upgrading of the illegal entity in the occupied areas – an issue that requires immediate and decisive action.

In this context, the Cyprus Medical Association expresses its sincere appreciation to the Panhellenic Medical Association and the Athens Medical Association for their consistent and steadfast support in defending our shared national and professional interests, the press release concludes.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

UN Security Council resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) condemned the illegal declaration of the pseudo-state in 1983, called it legally invalid and asked for its immediate withdrawal. Resolution 550, also called upon all states not to recognize the purported state of the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ set up by secessionist acts nor to facilitate or in any way assist that secessionist entity.
