The latest developments in the region, the Cyprus issue following the election of Tufan Erhrman as leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, and the Republic of Cyprus’s assumption of the Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2026 are expected to be the focus of the meeting to be held on Wednesday in Athens between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, according to Greek government sources.
The meeting at the Maximos Mansion is scheduled for around 11:00 a.m. and is taking place within the framework of the 3rd Cyprus-Greece Intergovernmental Summit. The meeting will be followed immediately by a plenary session of the Intergovernmental Summit, after which the two leaders will make statements to the press.
The Greek Prime Minister and the President of Cyprus are also expected to discuss energy issues, in light of recent developments, according to the same sources. Prime Minister Mitsotakis is expected to brief President Christodoulides on the meetings with US officials and the agreements signed in Athens, which upgrade Greece’s geopolitical and energy role in the wider region and as far as Ukraine.
The Summit is taking place two years after its official establishment by the two governments in 2023 and aims to intensify cooperation between the two countries and expand it to a number of areas beyond foreign policy. Environment, Health, Education, Transport, Digital Policy, Housing Policy, Civil Protection, Justice, Culture, and Foreign Policy are among the areas of cooperation that will be discussed by the relevant Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, with the aim of undertaking coordinated actions in the respective areas, intensifying cooperation, and exchanging best practices.
