New UN top official Khassim Diagne arrived in Cyprus

The new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, arrived in Cyprus and said that he looks forward to working with all partners across Cyprus.

A UN announcement says that Diagne, has arrived in Cyprus to formally assume his duties.

Diagne succeeds Colin Stewart, who completed his tenure in August 2025.

‘I am honoured and grateful to be here in Cyprus as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General. I look forward to working with all our partners across Cyprus’ SRSG Diagne said, speaking upon his arrival.

Diagne brings more than 25 years of experience in international affairs and senior leadership within the United Nations system, the announcement concludes.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
